Dear Members, Summer is finally upon us and the one time of year when one usually kicks back and slows down. The Greater Morristown YMCA is the exception to that rule, especially this summer with Project Renovation 2017 well underway. We strive to provide the best facility we possibly can for our members. At over 48,000 square feet, the need to improve and update our 36 year old building is ongoing and never ending. Last Fall, the Facilities Committee of the Board of Directors determined the need to renovate as the final major project to our facility. The construction involves the removal of our baseboard hot water heating system that extended across the front of the building, along with its large boiler that fed the membership desk, administration and circuit room. Since most of that area was going to be under construction, we determined that it was the perfect opportunity to update the façade, move and reduce the size of the administrative area and front desk in order to give that much needed space back to the members. Additionally, we are also adding new HVAC systems and installing a sprinkler system throughout the building. The construction has begun under the management of the Frankoski Construction Company, the same outstanding builders who completed our adult locker rooms, built the new Y-Zone on Saddle Road and updated the Richard F. Blake Childrens Center façade. We know when completed, you, our loyal members will be as thrilled with the outcome as we are and we thank you in advance for your patience. The hectic pace of construction pales in comparison to the explosion of children who enrolled in our summer camp program at our newly constructed Y-Zone and our Kinder Camp. For the first time in 30 years, we have had to close registration! 450 children have enrolled and enjoy a myriad of activities—from arts and crafts to outdoor sports, field trips and daily swim play at the Y. Our five seasoned Camp Directors, with over 25 years of experience running camps, ensure the children are making friends, creating memories and having fun—basically just being kids—all while in a safe and nurturing environment. Kudos to them for the extraordinary growth in a mere year of opening the Y-Zone! Thank you again for your patience and we hope you and your families enjoy a safe, healthy and relaxing summer! Dear Members,

Summer is finally upon us and the one time of year when one usually kicks back and

slows down. The Greater Morristown YMCA is the exception to that rule, especially

this summer with Project Renovation 2017 well underway.

We strive to provide the best facility we possibly can for our members. At over

48,000 square feet, the need to improve and update our 36 year old building is

ongoing and never ending. Last Fall, the Facilities Committee of the Board of

Directors determined the need to renovate as the final major project to our facility.

The construction involves the removal of our baseboard hot water heating system

that extended across the front of the building, along with its large boiler that fed

the membership desk, administration and circuit room. Since most of that area was

going to be under construction, we determined that it was the perfect opportunity

to update the façade, move and reduce the size of the administrative area and

front desk in order to give that much needed space back to the members.

Additionally, we are also adding new HVAC systems and installing a sprinkler

system throughout the building.

The construction has begun under the management of the Frankoski Construction

Company, the same outstanding builders who completed our adult locker rooms,

built the new Y-Zone on Saddle Road and updated the Richard F. Blake Children’s

Center façade.

We know when completed, you, our loyal members will be as thrilled with the

outcome as we are and we thank you in advance for your patience.

The hectic pace of construction pales in comparison to the explosion of children

who enrolled in our summer camp program at our newly constructed Y-Zone and

our Kinder Camp. For the first time in 30 years, we have had to close registration!

THE Y-ZONE ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

Congratulations to Morristown High School senior, Nicholas Pezzuti, who is the re-cipient of the second annual Y-Zone college scholarship. Below is his insightful essay about what the Richard F. Blake Children’s Center means to him. Nicholas will be at-tending Virginia Tech this Fall. We wish him all the best! I was about to embark on yet another of life’s transitions: entering high school. I walked in on that first day and was handed a thick folder containing an overwhelming amount of information. I noticed a purple shaded paper standing out among the rest of the packet. The paper was entitled, “All I Ever Really Needed To Know, I Learned in Kindergarten”, by Robert Fulghum. As I read through the page, I realized, all I ever needed to know, I learned at The Richard F. Blake Children’s Center, fondly known to my family as “Y’s Owls”. I attended Y’s Owls from the age of ten months until the age of five years. As I read through Fulghum’s quotes, it occurred to me that there is truth in the statement “Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school.” The basic principles I learned were not in books, or online, but rather in the real world. Through experience, interaction and instruction at Y’s Owls, I was gently introduced to these basic principles that would form my foundation for success. It was at Y’s Owls that I learned to share toys with my class-mates. I learned to put things back where I found them and to clean up my own mess. I learned to say I was sorry when I hurt someone. On field trips, my classmates and I learned to hold hands and stick together. As I embark on my next transition, enter-ing college, my new student orientation materials may not contain that same piece of purple paper. And while I may strive to reach the top of that graduate school mountain, I will never forget all I learned in that sandbox at Y’s Owls.

LEARNING TO REALLY SWIM

About a year ago, in the midst of many life-changing moments, I wandered into The Greater Morristown YMCA and was given a tour by Karen. We walked through to the spectacular pool, with its six lanes gleaming, whereupon I confessed that I had had a lifelong dream to really learn how to swim. I asked whether the Y gave adult swim-ming lessons, and by June 19th, 2016 I was enrolled in a beginners’ class with Marco. As I proceeded taking additional instruction, practicing daily, and attending aqua aer-obics classes, many positive things began to happen to me, both mentally and physi-cally. I began to healthfully lose weight, and discovered my intuition that swimming would be enjoyable was an understatement. Swimming had become a passion for me. Many people saw how happy swimming and aqua fitness classes made me. Chris Weav-er, Aquatics Instructor, suggested that, one day, I might be interested in learning to teach these skilled exercise classes. Addi-tionally, while taking lessons with instruc-tors who were also lifeguards, I learned a lot about what it might take to become a lifeguard. So, when a lifeguarding course was offered at the YMCA, I eagerly enrolled. When I finished the course, by luck the Y was hiring lifeguards. I am delighted they have me the job. The YMCA community has been, and contin-ues to be supportive and encouraging. I have been lucky from day one to have met so many terrific people, from members to staff. Thank you, everyone—and I do mean everyone — for the “can-do” spirit that you have so generously shared with me. It’s been an amazing year! - Glenda Mitchell

COLD NOSES, WARMING HEARTS Our friends at Harmony House, our day cen-ter for adults, are very fortunate to have regular visits from their four legged friends. Whether it be the volunteers at Creature Comfort Pet Therapy or Shari Stack, fellow Morris Township resident and her dog, Anyka, our friends enjoy this special bond and look forward to the visits. Research has shown that animal interaction has a positive and undeniable effect on one’s health. A pet can help lower blood pressure, decrease depression and anxiety, encourage communication and provide com-fort. We know this new program is a huge benefit and are happy to be able to offer it.

PS3 GRADUATION

On Friday, June 9th, The Richard F. Blake Chil-dren’s Center said goodbye to our preschool 3 class with a special graduation ceremony at the Y-Zone. We understand how important the early years are in the lifelong learning and development of children. This age is crucial in the develop-ment of a child and sets the tone for the rest of his or her life. Our state approved curricu-lum challenges and familiarizes the children with structure and unstructured activities, quiet and active time, large and small groups, one-on-one relationships, and gross and fine motor skills. All while making friends and cre-ating memories. While we are always sad to see our chil-dren graduate, we are thrilled to have watched them grow and develop into fine, young children. Con-gratulations and we wish you all the best as your start Kinder-garten! See article on Y-Zone Scholarship Recipient for his experience at The Richard F. Blake Children’s Center.

CHIP IN FOR YOUR COMMUNITY On Monday, September 11th, 2017, The Greater Morristown YMCA will host our 30th Annual Charity Golf Outing at Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown, NJ. Over the last 30 years we have raised close to $1,000,000 through this yearly event. These monies provided underserved children in our community the opportunity to attend day care, camp, after school care and YMCA programs, like swim and Youth Basketball Association (YBA). Thanks to this one event, thousands of children are given the chance to start on a level playing field with their peers. The event is always a wonderful day filled with great golf, food and comradery. You can either register on-line at www.greatermorristownymca.com or in person with our Membership Team. Come and join us to celebrate 30 years of fun and philanthropy! For additional information, please contact Karen at [email protected].
