17 But God does not use His grace to make His law of none effect, or to take the place of His law. . . . God’s grace and the law of His kingdom are in perfect harmony; they walk hand in hand. His grace makes it possi- ble for us to draw nigh to Him by faith. By receiving it, and letting it work in our lives, we testify to the validi- ty of the law; we exalt the law and make it honorable by carrying out its living principles through the power of the grace of Christ; and by rendering pure, whole- hearted obedience to God’s law, we witness before the universe of heaven, and before an apostate world that is making void the law of God, to the power of redemption.(R.H. 1896. 9. 15) After being strangers in servitude a strange land for four hundred years, the Israelites were redeemed by God through the blood of Christ. All who have received the light upon these subjects are to bear testimony of the great truths which God has committed to them. The sanctuary in heaven is the very center of Christ’s work in behalf of men. It concerns every soul living upon the earth. All alike go down into the grave. And through the provisions of the plan of salvation, all are to be brought forth from their graves. “There shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust;” “for as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.” Acts 24:15; I Corinthians 15:22. But a distinction is made between the two classes that are brought forth. “All that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrec- tion of damnation.” John 5:28, 29. They who have been “accounted worthy” of the resurrection of life are “blessed and holy.” “On such the second death hath no pow- er.” Revelation 20:6. But those who have not, through repentance and faith, secured pardon, must receive the penalty of trans- gression—“the wages of sin.” They suffer punishment varying in duration and inten- sity, “according to their works,” but finally ending in the second death. Since it is impossible for God, consistently with His justice and mercy, to save the sinner in his sins, He deprives him of the exis- tence which his transgressions have for- feited and of which he has proved him- self unworthy. Every character will be fully developed; and all will show whether they have chosen the side of loyalty or that of rebellion.” DA 763. “He who reads every heart and tries every motive will leave none who desire a knowledge of the truth, to be deceived as to the issues of the controversy. The decree is not to be urged upon the people blindly. Everyone is to have sufficient light to make his decision intelligently. The Sabbath will be the great test of loyal- ty, for it is the point of truth especially contro- verted. When the final test shall be brought to bear upon men, then the line of distinction will be drawn between those who serve God and those who serve Him not. While the observance of the false sabbath in compliance with the law of the state, contrary to the fourth commandment, will be an avowal of alle- giance to a power that is in opposition to God, the keeping of the true Sabbath, in obedience to God’s law, is an evidence of loyalty to the Creator. While one class, by accepting the sign of submission to earthly powers, receive the mark of the beast, the other choosing the token of allegiance to divine authority, receive the seal of God.” GC 605. “Notwith- standing that Satan has been constrained to acknowledge God’s justice and to bow to the supremacy of Christ, his character remains unchanged. The spirit of rebel- lion, like a mighty torrent, again bursts forth. Filled with frenzy, he determines not to yield the great controver- sy. The time has come for a last desperate strug- gle against the King^of heav- en.” GC 672. “After that he must be loosed a little while” Rev. 20:3 PP. 241-256 The genealogy of Jesus PP. 491-498 Othniel Ehud Shamgar Deborah Barak Gideon Abimelech Tola Jair Jephthah Ibzan Elon Abdon Samson Eli The Reign of Judges PP 90-104 930 912 905 910 962 365 777 950 600 438 433 464 239 239 230? 148? 205 175 PP 80-89 PP. 70-79 PP 33-43 The Age of wounded Papacy “One of his heads as it were wounded to death” Rev. 13:3 The Character and Part of the Little Horn (Dan 7:8, 20-25) 1 Came up from the fourth horn ---- Came up from Rome 1 Came up among the ten horns---- After the division of Rome in 457 1 Stronger that his fellows---- stronger than other kings. 1 Having eyes and a mouth and speaks---- grew to be the elder of the world church 1 Plucked up three horns---- Conquered Heruli, Vandals , Ostrogoths 1 Speaks great words against the most High--- the vicar of Jesus Christ. 1 Wears out the saints of the Most High--- religious persecution for 1260 years The Restoration of Papacy “Wound was Healed” Rev. 13:3 The Revival of Papacy “All the world wondered after the beast” Rev. 13:3 The earth to be New Jerusalem Church forever The resurrection of the wicked ADAM Industrial Revolution, the Develop- ment of Sectarianism, World War, Gen. ch. 27-36 Sidon Heth Jebusite Amorite Girgasite Hivite Arkite Sinite Arvadite Zemarite Hamathite Gomer Magog Madai Javan Tubal Meshech Tiras Enoch Irad Mehujael Methusael Lamech Distrust (The Spirit of Disobedience) Faith(The Spirit of Obedience) The Age of Rome Medieval age Modern Age The Age of Rome The Age of Greece The Age of Persia The Ancient Near East and the Orient The law and the Man : Biblical Concept of Sanctification--- “By the word and the Spirit of God are opened to men the great principles of righteousness embodied in His law. And since the law of God is “holy, and just, and good,” a transcript of the divine perfection, it follows that a character formed by obedience to that law will be holy. Christ is a perfect example of such a character. He says: “I have kept My Father’s commandments.” “I do always those things that please Him.” John 15:10; 8:29. The followers of Christ are to become like Him—by the grace of God to form characters in harmony with the principles of His holy law. During the captivity, many of the people had received hea- then ideas and customs, and these were brought into their religious service. In many things they conformed to the practices of idolaters. As they departed from God, the Jews in a great degree lost sight of the teaching of the ritual service. ... They trusted to the sacrifices and ordinances them- selves, instead of resting upon Him to whom they pointed. In order to supply the place of that which they had lost, the priests and rabbis multiplied requirements of their own; and the more rigid they grew, the less of the love of God was manifested. WHY THE GREAT CONTROVERSY BETWEEN CHRIST … · 17 “But God does not use His grace to make His law of none effect, or to take the place of His law. . . . God’s grace and the law

“But God does not use His graceto make His law of none effect, or to takethe place of His law. . . . God’s grace and

the law of His kingdom are in perfect harmony;they walk hand in hand. His grace makes it possi-

ble for us to draw nigh to Him by faith. By receiving it,and letting it work in our lives, we testify to the validi-ty of the law; we exalt the law and make it honorableby carrying out its living principles through the powerof the grace of Christ; and by rendering pure, whole-hearted obedience to God’s law, we witness before

the universe of heaven, and before an apostateworld that is making void the law of God, to

the power of redemption.” (R.H. 1896. 9. 15)

After being strangers in servitude astrange land for four hundred years, the Israelites were redeemed by Godthrough the blood of Christ. Thenthrough the experiential religion inthe path from Egypt to Canaan, Godtried to teach the history of the greatcontroversy to reach unto the perfec-tion through Christ.

“The fire that consumes the wicked purifies the earth. Everytrace of the curse is swept away. No eternally burning hell willkeep before the ransomed the fearful consequences of sin.

One reminder alone remains: Our Redeemer will ever bearthe marks of His crucifixion. Upon His wounded head, uponHis side, His hands and feet, are the only traces of the cruelwork that sin has wrought. Says the prophet, beholding Christin His glory: “He had bright beams coming out of His side: andthere was the hiding of His power.” Habakkuk 3:4, margin. That pierced side whence flowed the crimson stream that recon-ciled man to God—there is the Saviour’s glory, there “the hid-ing of His power.” “Mighty to save,” through the sacrifice ofredemption, He was therefore strong to execute justice uponthem that despised God’s mercy. And the tokens of His humili-ation are His highest honor; through the eternal ages thewounds of Calvary will show forth His praise and declare Hispower.” GC 674.

“He claimed that it was his own object toimprove upon the statutes of Jehovah. Therefore God permitted him to demon-strate the nature of his claims, to show theworking out of his proposed changes in thedivine law. His own work must condemnhim.... The whole universe must see deceiv-er unmasked.

For the good of the entire universethrough ceaseless ages, he must more fullydevelop his principles, that his chargesagainst the divine government might beseen in their true light by all created beings, and that the justice and mercy of God andthe immutability of His law might be forev-er placed beyond all question.

Satan’s rebellion was to be a lesson tothe universe through all coming ages—aperpetual testimony to the nature of sin andits^terrible results. The working out ofSatan’s rule, its effects upon both men andangels, would show what must be the fruitof setting aside the divine authority. Itwould testify that with the existence ofGod’s government is bound up the well-being of all the creatures He has made. Thus the history of this terrible experimentof rebellion was to be a perpetual safeguardto all holy beings, to prevent them frombeing deceived as to the nature of transgres-sion, to save them from committing sin, andsuffering its penalty.” PP 42-43

“Those who would share the benefits of the Saviour’s mediation should permit nothing to interfere with their duty to perfect holiness in the fear of God. The precious hours, instead of being given to pleasure, to display,or to gain seeking, should be devoted to an earnest, prayerful study of the word of truth. The subject of the sanctuary and the investigative judgment should be clearly understood by the people of God. All need a knowl-edge for themselves of the position and work of their great High Priest. Otherwise it will be impossible for them to exercise the faith which is essential at this time or to occupy the position which God designs them to fill.Every individual has a soul to save or to lose.”

“Each has a case pending at the bar of God. Each must meet the great Judge face to face. How important, then, that every mind contemplate often the solemn scene when the judgment shall sit and the books shall be opened, when, with Daniel, every individual must stand in his lot, at the end of the days. All who have received the light upon these subjects are to bear testimony of the great truths which God has committed to them. The sanctuary in heaven is thevery center of Christ’s work in behalf of men. It concerns every soul living upon the earth. It opens to view the plan of redemption, bringing us down to the very close of time and revealing the triumphant issue of the contest betweenrighteousness and sin. It is of the utmost importance that all should thoroughly investigate these subjects and be able to give an answer to^everyone that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them.” GC 489

Jesus’ Entry

The Completion of Heavenly Firstborn Church

“In consequence of Adam’s sin, deathpassed upon the whole human race. Allalike go down into the grave. And throughthe provisions of the plan of salvation, allare to be brought forth from their graves.“There shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust;” “for as inAdam all die, even so in Christ shall all bemade alive.” Acts 24:15; I Corinthians15:22. But a distinction is made betweenthe two classes that are brought forth. “Allthat are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have donegood, unto the resurrection of life; andthey that have done evil, unto the resurrec-tion of damnation.” John 5:28, 29. Theywho have been “accounted worthy” of theresurrection of life are “blessed and holy.”“On such the second death hath no pow-er.” Revelation 20:6. But those who havenot, through repentance and faith, securedpardon, must receive the penalty of trans-gression—“the wages of sin.” They sufferpunishment varying in duration and inten-sity, “according to their works,” but finallyending in the second death. Since it isimpossible for God, consistently withHis justice and mercy, to save the sinnerin his sins, He deprives him of the exis-tence which his transgressions have for-feited and of which he has proved him-self unworthy. Says an inspired writer:“Yet a little while, and the wicked shallnot be: yea, thou shalt diligently consid-er his place, and it shall not be.” Andanother declares: “They shall be asthough^They had not been.” Psalm37:10; Obadiah 16. Covered withinfamy, they sink into hopeless, eternaloblivion.” GC 545

“By His life and His death, Christ proved that God’s justice did not destroyHis mercy, but that sin could be forgiven, and that the law is righteous, andcan be perfectly obeyed. Satan’s charges were refuted. God had given manunmistakable evidence of His love.” DA 762.

“Another deception was now to be brought forward. Satan declared that mercy destroyed justice, that the death of Christ abrogated the Father’s law. Had it been possiblefor the law to be changed or abrogated, then Christ need not have died. But to abrogate the law would be to immortalize transgression, and place the world under Satan’s con-trol. It was because the law was changeless, because man could be saved only through obedience to its precepts, that Jesus was lifted up on the cross. Yet the very means bywhich Christ established the law Satan represented as destroying it. Here will come the last conflict of the great controversy between Christ and Satan.” DA 762,763.

“Men will surely set up their laws to counterwork the laws of God. They will seek to compel theconsciences of others, and in their zeal to enforce these laws they will oppress their fellow men.

The warfare against God’s law, which was begun in heaven, will be continued until the end oftime. Every man will be tested. Obedience or disobedience is the question to be decided by the wholeworld. All will be called to choose between the law of God and the laws of men. Here the dividingline will be drawn. There will be but two classes. Every character will be fully developed; and all willshow whether they have chosen the side of loyalty or that of rebellion.” DA 763.

“He who reads every heart andtries every motive will leave none who

desire a knowledge of the truth, to bedeceived as to the issues of the controversy. The decree is not to be urged upon the peopleblindly. Everyone is to have sufficient light tomake his decision intelligently.

The Sabbath will be the great test of loyal-ty, for it is the point of truth especially contro-verted. When the final test shall be brought tobear upon men, then the line of distinctionwill be drawn between those who serve Godand those who serve Him not. While theobservance of the false sabbath in compliancewith the law of the state, contrary to the fourthcommandment, will be an avowal of alle-giance to a power that is in opposition to God,the keeping of the true Sabbath, in obedienceto God’s law, is an evidence of loyalty to theCreator. While one class, by accepting thesign of submission to earthly powers, receivethe mark of the beast, the other choosing the

The law and the Man : Biblical Concept of Sanctification--- “By the word and the Spirit of God are opened to menthe great principles of righteousness embodied in His law. And since the law of God is “holy, and just, and good,” atranscript of the divine perfection, it follows that a character formed by obedience to that law will be holy. Christ is aperfect example of such a character. He says: “I have kept My Father’s commandments.” “I do always those thingsthat please Him.” John 15:10; 8:29. The followers of Christ are to become like Him—by the grace of God to formcharacters in harmony with the principles of His holy law. This is Bible sanctification.” GC 470.

Then, the plan of redemption hav-ing been completed, the character of God is revealed to all created intelligences. The precepts of His law are seen to be perfect and immutable. not placed beyond the possibility ofwrongdoing. God made them freemoral agents, capable of appreciatingthe wisdom and benevolence of Hischaracter and the justice of Hisrequirements, and with full liberty toyield or to withhold obedience. Theywere to enjoy communion with Godand with holy angels; but before theycould be rendered eternally secure, their loyalty must be tested. At thevery beginning of man’s existence acheck was placed upon the desire forself-indulgence, the fatal passion thatlay at the foundation of Satan’s fall. The tree of knowledge, which stoodnear the tree of life in the midst of thegarden, was^to be a test of the obedi-ence, faith, and love of our parents. While permitted to eat freely of everyother tree, they were forbidden totaste of this, on pain of death. Theywere also to be exposed to the tempta-tions of Satan; but if they endured thetrial, they would finally be placedbeyond his power, to enjoy perpetual

favor with God” PP 48.

Why did God wait 400 years to give the land ofCanaan to the descendants of Abraham? The iniquity of the Amonites in the land of Canaan was not yet fullThe number of descendants of Abrahamwas small.(Ps.105:12)God had planned that after the Israelites would be strangersand serve as slaves for 400 years, through the plan ofdeliverance God would reveal His glory and teach thegreat controversy between good and evil,so that it couldbe an illumination to subsequent generation. The Wicked

“The Lord is “merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth,

. . . forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” YetHe will “by no means clear the guilty.” The Lord isslow to anger, and great in power, and will not at allacquit the wicked.” Exodus 34:6, 7; Nahum 1:3. Byterrible things in righteousness He will vindicate theauthority of His downtrodden law. The severity of theretribution awaiting the transgressor may be judged bythe Lord’s reluctance to execute justice. The nationwith which He bears long, and which He will not smiteuntil it has filled up the measure of its iniquity in God’s

account, will finally drink the cup of wrathunmixed with mercy.” GC 628.

“After the return from Babylon, much attention was given to religious

instruction. All over the country, synagogueswere erected, where the law was expounded bythe priests and scribes. And schools were estab-lished, which, together with the arts and sciences, professed to teach the principles of righteousness. But these agencies became corrupted. During thecaptivity, many of the people had received hea-then ideas and customs, and these were broughtinto their religious service. In many things theyconformed to the practices of idolaters.

As they departed from God, the Jews in a greatdegree lost sight of the teaching of the ritual service.... They trusted to the sacrifices and ordinances them-selves, instead of resting upon Him to whom theypointed. In order to supply the place of that whichthey had lost, the priests and rabbis multipliedrequirements of their own; and the more rigid theygrew, the less of the love of God was manifested. They measured their holiness by the multitude of

their ceremonies, while their hearts were filledwith pride and hypocrisy.” DA 29

PP. 125-144

“The student should learn to view the word as a whole, and to see the relation of its parts. He should gain a knowledge of its grand central theme, of God’s original purpose for the world, of the rise of the great controversy, and of the work of redemption. He should understand the nature of the two principles that are contending for supremacy, and should learn to trace their workingthrough the records of history and prophecy, to the great consummation. He should see how this controversy enters into every phase of human experience; how in every act of life he himself reveals the one or the other of the two antagonistic motives; and how, whether he will or not, he is even now deciding upon which side of the controversy he will be found.”(Ed 190)

the law of God was discarded by Satan's leading through men

However, in every age, the witnesses who proved that the law

of God could be kept have existed.
