The Kitchen Garden Program is now affordable, flexible and attainable for all Australian schools with a primary curriculum. Your school can directly benefit from subsidised training of classroom teachers. Low SES schools may qualify for a limited number of Australian Government grants of up to ($11,000 GST inc.) to go towards kitchen and garden infrastructure and training– if your school is eligible you will be notified during the application process. The Australian Government funding associated with the Program is now directed to training your school staff to deliver the Program, supplying written and online resource materials and providing ongoing support to your school. Schools running a Kitchen Garden Program are responsible for creating their garden and kitchen spaces. There is flexibility in the requirements of the garden and kitchen spaces, and you will receive a variety of resources demonstrating how to create these spaces in your school in an affordable way. Every school is encouraged to network with other schools establishing the Program, and to connect with schools already running the Program successfully and economically. The Foundation facilitates these relationships. ‘It gets us ready for our lives.’ Student, Elizabeth Downs PS, South Australia ‘Our students have benefited enormously through the school’s involvement in the Program. So much of the Australian Curriculum has real links to the hands-on

learning experiences of the Kitchen Garden Program. We have explored

Gadgets and Gizmos - investigating how things work: we applied it to our

kitchen and garden equipment. Looking at the design of tools, students were able

to determine the forces that were needed to create movement and what simple

machine was used. A spade uses an inclined plane; an egg beater a wheel

and axle. Hands-on meaningful investigation; problem solving and learning.

Caroline Lawson, Principal, Benarkin SS, Queensland

‘I can already see the potential this program

has for growth not only in our school, but

our community as well. Even more rewarding

is to see, already, the changing eating habits

of students within the school.’
