Introduction You will find me in a cave or on a branch of a tree hanging upside down. I enjoy eating fruits and bugs and have been called lazy. The light blinds me and people tell scary stories about me. What am I? If you want to find out just fly on inside!

Night Expert

First I’ll tell you what a bat is. Bats are nocturnal mammals and are the only ones that fly so don’t get jealous. What! You don’t even know what the word nocturnal means. It’s to sleep in the day and wake up at night. We are not blind. It is just our eyes are not good in the dark. That’s why we bats have to use echolocation. It’s like laughing that you can’t here. When the sound comes back to the bat it means that something might intercept it. Mmm something right now would be great to eat. But I warn you it will be gross.

I’m Hungry

So you do want to see what I devour. But I warned you it will be gross. Mmm a worm I’m going to get it. Hay some fruit if you go get it I’ll share some with you. Now let’s look for a small animal. There’s some sheep. I’m going to suck some blood from them. Don’t worry I don’t suck human blood. Now lets look for a tasty juicy flower. There’s one it’s a sunflower. Were lucky. Opps I forgot to tell you that a bats favorite fruit, well fruits are mangos and bananas. Plus we just had those two minutes ago.

Time for A Nap

Time for a nap. But first let me tell you how I sleep you’ll find me usually hanging up side down doing nothing. Then if a bug buzzes by I can reach out and get it. So I might be a little lazy. There are like 100 of us in a cave so you can imagine having to go to the bathroom in the middle of the morning. Any way lets go see my relatives.

Friends

Okay now lets go see my brother Jhon. He’s a Ghost Bat like me. First of all were not ghosts. We just look like them because we have a white mane like a lion. Okay lets go see my sister the dancing

bat. Dancing Bats don’t really dance. They just look like their dancing when they try to walk like you do. I have a lot more cousins but I can’t tell you them

all.

The Foes

Let’s go home now if we don’t want to get eaten by predators. Alert alert get into the darkness or the owl will eat you. We must camouflage now. Whew that was a close one. Bye I hope to see you again in my other books about bats.

Glossary

Mammal - a thing that has hair and has live babies. Nocturnal - to sleep in the day and wake up at night. Cousins- somebody related to you. Predators -something that wants to eat you or attack you.
