THIRTEENT H S U NDAY IN O RDIN ARY TIME

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

Dear Parish Family,

As we embrace the season of summer, we enter into a time where much in our lives seems to slow down…as I once heard it said, “life seems to be more settled in the dog days of summer.” This same sentiment can be applied to the life and breath of the Church. Our post-Easter season is the longest period or season of the church year. We in the parish also enter fully into a long journey of weeks known as Ordinary Time. I extend farewell and abundant prayers to Father Michael Applegate who has been assigned as parochial vicar at Saint Pius V Catholic Church in Pasadena. You will be missed and prayed for. May God bless your journey in priesthood and your ministry to the people of Pasadena.

I am happy to note that the faithful wanting to participate in the sacraments by attending Sunday Mass continue to grow with each passing week. This is a wonderful blessing. However, we are still in the midst of COVID-19 and as such, are mandated by our Cardinal to maintain safe social distancing of six feet between pews, individuals, and families who attend Mass in all churches of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. As well, we are further mandated to allow no more than 25% capacity of the church to enter inside for worship at Mass at any given time. Due to the construction of our church, we simply cannot spread out as I or any of us would prefer to. Additionally, the Cardinal has asked that we specify only one entrance and exit for public use at the church. For us at St. Michael, that is the front glass narthex doors. Given these constraints, our total capacity for Masses on the weekend is 120 persons. We are not seating any persons or families in the chapel at this time – rather, we are seating the members of our pandemic response team in the chapel. I am deeply grateful to those staff members and parishioners who have given their time and efforts to assist in the cleaning and sanitizing of our church between Masses, keeping all of us safe.

Beginning the weekend of July 4-5th and going forward, I will be implementing one more Mass to our Sunday schedule. We will return to a more “normal” Mass schedule at St. Michael the Archangel. Our Mass times will be Saturday Vigil Mass at 5pm, Sunday morning Masses at 7am, 9am and 11am. This time schedule allows for proper cleaning of the church and restrooms between Masses.

We will be having many Masses for our 2nd grade children and their families who have prepared for First Holy Communion. These Masses began on Saturday, June 13th and will commence through the month of August. We can only invite 10 children and family members, not to exceed 12 at each celebration. Following this important moment in the lives of our young people, we continue to schedule and offer baptisms, weddings, renewal of vows, memorial Masses for our beloved deceased. These will occur in the late afternoon timeframe on Sundays in order to accommodate as best we can all who come to us in need.

While this schedule may not be perfect, it is certainly a perfect effort on behalf of the staff and clergy to reach out to you, our faithful, in these trying times. I pray that soon, we can increase our capacity to more than 25%, but this decision will be made by Cardinal DiNardo and in turn, articulated to you. In the meantime, I ask that we be patient, exercise appropriate social distancing, wear a face mask at all times when in the church, submit to a temperature screening upon entrance into the narthex, and have your hands sanitized by one of our team members prior to receiving holy communion. This procedure is truly an abundance of care that we offer to you and your loved ones.

Finally, I thank all of you for your faithful stewardship to our parish at this time. While the challenges of this pandemic have been expressed, the clergy and staff continue to do our very best to meet the needs of the parish and the ministries that we offer. For those of you who have given generously of your treasures through the Sunday collection, Faith Direct, Parish Soft, on-line giving, or by dropping off your contribution to the parish office, I am deeply grateful to you for your financial commitment to the parish. As such, we were able to reduce our outstanding debt from our Capital Campaign in 2008 by half. This is wonderful! We are still in debt to the amount of $632,000.00. When we pay off our debt, the parish will realize an additional $35,000.00 per month by not having to pay our existing parish debt. Until this dream becomes reality, I ask that you continue to give generously to our parish offertory collection. Thank you!

May God Bless You,

Fr. Wayne Wilkerson, Pastor

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SUNDAY READING REFLECTIONSFirst Reading:In this passage, a woman shows the hospitality customary at that time, but then she goes above and beyond these expectations by offering Elisha a private room he could use during his travels.

Why do you think the woman invited Elisha to stay with her and her husband?

Gospel:In verses 40-42, the focus shifts from potential disciples to those who respond to Jesus’ disciples. Today, just as people represent or stand in for their employer, so it was in biblical times. A prophet (like Elijah) represented God. A positive response to the prophet equaled a positive response to God.

What are all the ways a person can offer hospitality to a disciple of Jesus?

MASS INTENTIONS & READINGS

Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, ApostlesMonday, June 29

Grant, we pray, O Lord our God, that we may be sustained by the intercession of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, that, as through them you gave your Church the foundations of her heavenly office, so through them you may help her to eternal salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Due to the impact of COVID-19, hard working individuals within our Parish area were laid off from their jobs and found themselves trying to make ends meet with continuing expenses for food, housing, utilities, and medicine. With little to no income, their savings were quickly being depleted.

The calls to St. Michael’s Charity Line increased by 400-500%. Some families were skipping meals and waiting hours in line at food pantries for anything that was available.

The volunteers at St. Michael’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) immediately assembled and began delivering “Emergency Packs” of food and basic necessities to families, often using personal funds. At the Christian Community Services Center (CCSC), where St. Michael the Archangel Church is a member, we delivered food for distribution and provided pledges to assist families with partial payments for rent and utilities.

We spent time on the telephone with each caller letting them know that they would be cared for and would do our best to assist them. We also provided information about other organizations that may be able to help.

We were concerned in early April that our SVdP funds would soon be depleted, but we put our trust in God. Through the working of the Holy Spirit, you responded with generous donations at levels we had never seen.

Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your generosity, and may God continue to bless all of us as we help those in need!
