Reactions 967 - 6 Sep 2003 The WHO has issued a statement on the safety of smallpox vaccines, following the presentation of two expert reports to the Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety in Geneva, Switzerland, in June this year. The reports highlighted the variation in pathogenicity of previously used strains, noting that safety information gained with older vaccines may not be applicable to newer vaccines. Special attention was paid to the lack of data regarding immunisation safety in those aged < 18 years, age-related risks, and vaccination outcomes in pregnant women. They highlight the importance of adverse event monitoring for the vaccine, and conclude that "there is a real risk of serious adverse events following immunization with smallpox vaccine".
