Who is Charles Babbage, what did he do
and how has he affected the realm
of Information Systems. Where do you see his
influence today?
Scope 1. About Charles Babbage 2. Difference Engine No.1 3. Analytical Engine 4. Difference Engine No.2 5. Charles Babbage in Modern Era 6. Conclusion
“Father of Computing"
Who was he?
(1791 - 1871)
- Mathematician, - Inventor - Philosopher - Mechanical engineer
Biography Charles Babbage
1791 - was born on 26 December, London, England 1814 - married Georgina Whitemore at the age of 23, 1827 – Wife died at the age of 35 1832 - published "Economy of Manufactures and Machinery" 1842 - published "Sketch of the Analytical Engine" 1864 - published "Passages from the Life of a Philosopher" 1871 - died on 18 October in London, England
1816 - Founded the Astronomical Society 1820 - Founded the Analytical Society 1821 - Began work on the Difference Engine 1827 - Published a table of logarithms from 1 to 108000 1832 - British government suspended funding for his
Difference Engine 1834 - Began work on the Analytical Engine 1837 - Conceptual design for Analytical Engine completed 1842 - Begins work & designing the Difference Engine No. 2 1856 - design of the Analytical Engine completed, uses Jacquard's punch card idea for programming
Career Milestones
Difference Engine No. 1 (1821)
Calculator - to calculate a series of values and print results
automatically in a table.
Analytical Engine (1834)
General-purpose programmable computing engine
Difference Engine No. 2 (1842 - 1849)
An improved version of the original. The design was 1/3 of the parts from Difference Engine No. 1,
while providing similar computing power.
1821 “Difference Engine No.1”
Calculator (Addition & subtraction only)
1834 “Analytical Engine”
Calculator & (Addition, Subtraction,
Multiplication & division)
1842 - 1849 “Difference Engine No.2” (Improved version and a
combination of Engine No.1 & Analytical Engine)
All 3 models designs were completed however they
were physically partially completed
None of Babbage's designs was physically realized in his
lifetime - WHY?
1. Victorian mechanical engineering were not sufficiently developed to produce parts with sufficient precision. 2. Lack of funding 3. Personality Differences
Why Charles Babbage never completed his 3 engines
1821 “Difference Engine No.1”
Calculator (Addition & subtraction only)
2012 Calculators are pre-designed with specific functions such as addition,
multiplication, and logarithms built in
1842 - 1849 “Difference Engine No.2” (Improved version and a
combination of Engine No.1 & Analytical Engine)
2012 A computer is a programmable machine
designed to carry out a sequence of arithmetic or logical operations
- his invention has made IS possible - IS an essential and integral part of our lives that we cannot imagine a life without it
Conclusion
How has Charles Babbage invention affected the realms of information Systems?
The End,
Thank You
