A Message from the Heart
Presented by Brad BaptisteRegional VPP Manager
OSHA Region VIII – Denver, Colorado
What a heart attack can teach us
about safety and health management systems
Q: Why did I have a heart attack?
A: Because I became complacent:– It won’t happen to me – I’m too young– I’m on cholesterol medication – I’m good to go!!– My focus was on kids & work – not me
A: I ignored obvious symptoms such as:– Shortness of breath– Unexplained soreness, tightness & discomfort
Translation in SHMS Language: Q: Why did my SHMS fail?
A: Because “I” became complacent:– It won’t happen to me– We have good rates - we are good to go!!!– Shifting focus (production, personal, professional)
A: “I” ignored obvious symptoms such as:– Housekeeping– Employee Involvement and stop work authority– Production-centered focus
Do you see any SYMPTOMS
here?
