The Long View

• Whatever philosophy or strategy youchoose, make sure that it isn’t just rhetoric

• Beware ‘band-wagonning’– Exemplar innovations become corrupted

when the late majority join in without the samemotivation and commitment to the initial vision

Access to an OH nurse will be made available to all shifts.Prescribing nurses on site to provide health advice to workforce away from home, and regular health checksEvery site to have sufficient dedicated briefing areas with projector / audio to give visual briefings but not in the canteenCovered and secure cycle storage areaMain vehicle routes to be set up for no reversing unless impossible to achieveDedicated health check roomSolar panels/other low carbon technologies for powering officesNew office furniture in all project offices Waterless urinals (subject to odour issues)A 24/7 subsidised canteen providing both hot and cold food, snacks including healthy options food to be as a high street standard promotion of healthy eatingSandwich toasters and normal toasters.Air conditioning throughout welfare and offices

The Long View

• Getting things right before you start isa ‘no-brainer’… but how resilient areour organisations and teams whenthings happen to prevent this?

The Long View

• Engaging workers requires more thanthe traditional induction approach

• Is making people feel valued and creatinga sense of common purpose as importantas briefing on OSH issues?

The Long View

• Do innovative initiatives only work whenthey are new?

• How do we know what ‘old-stuff’ to hangon to when we bring in a new approach?

The Long View

• Raised expectations?• How much theory?• Emotional stress?• The ‘surprise factor’?

Roll-out?

• Immersive & interactive programmes can increaseconfidence to challenge unsafe behaviour

• Large projects and programmes could easily adaptEPIC to their contexts

• Scenarios and contexts could be developed fordifferent sectors whilst retaining the underlyingmessages

• Potential for regional roll-out of a more generic versionof EPIC to engage smaller projects and SMEs

A site worker hears someone shout…Click the button and listen carefully to what the person says?

What should they do FIRST?

A. Go to the escape route as soon as possibleB. Work harder to get the tunnel work finished quickerC. Help the worker who is about to collapseD. Ignore them because they are being rude

“The tunnel is about to collapse! Run!”

Findings The Long View• Tutorial or language competence test?• Equal opportunities challenge?• Does everyone have to take the test?• Relevance large range of competence levels and roles?• One set of generic questions understood by all, or customised

to suit different job roles?• Computer-based test works for ‘reception’ (i.e. comprehension)

but what about interaction and production?• What is the pass rate?• Straightforward pass-fail or a graded score with different

outcomes?• What about those who do not pass?• Avoiding repeat of the safety passport test (e.g. CSCS)?
