As the first project within the Whitewater University Technology

Park, the Innovation Center’s mission is to provide space, facilities,

expertise and services to entrepreneurs starting businesses in close

alignment with UW-Whitewater. The Innovation Center is a central

learning location for both the Technology Park and the adjacent

Business Park.

The Center features flexible modules that are adaptable to future

uses. The new, two-story building serves commercial and incubator

tenants offering wet lab space and a flexible configuration for

it’s users. With a goal of setting the standard for responsible and

sustainable design for future developments within the park, the

Innovation Center achieved LEED Gold Certification. The project

was funded by the US Department of Commerce Economic

Development Administration, the City of Whitewater and the

Whitewater Community Development Authority.

The Innovation Center uses many environmentally friendly

technologies and products as part of our efforts to promote

sustainability and the LEED Gold Level Certification.

Key green features and practices incorporated into the design are:

Floors: Floor tiles and carpet are made from 45% to 66%

recycled materials

Air Quality: Adhesives emit low levels of volatile organic

compounds (VOCs)

Green Seal certified cleaning products are used to

reduce environmental and health impacts

Plumbing: Plumbing utilizes low-flow technology to reduce

water consumption

Lighting: Rooms are equipped with motion detectors, which

conserve energy when the room is not in use

Efficient lights reduce electrical consumption

Lights in rooms with south-facing windows are

programmed to remain off when there is sufficient

natural light

g re e n f e a t u re sGeothermal heating and cooling:

A geothermal heating and cooling system is used in this building,

decreasing overall energy consumption. Geothermal systems

take advantage of relatively stable underground temperatures to

reduce the need for traditional heating and cooling systems by

exchanging air from the building with air from below ground.

Some of the lower life cycle cost benefits include:

• Anticipated Energy Savings of $9,965 per year

• Calculated Simple Payback of 16 years

• Reduction of CO2 Emissions of 135 metric tons per year

• Considerable reduction of SO2 and NOx emissions

• Excellent Ground Formation Thermal Conductivity of 2.72

Btu/hr-ft-°F

• Available land area of approximately 20,000 square feet

• Geoexchange system modularity and optimization

opportunities to reduce first cost

Solar Panels:

The Innovation Center is equipped with three photovoltaic arrays

to utilize solar energy. When these solar arrays produce a power

surplus, clean solar energy will be sold back to WE Energies for

use in other homes or businesses in the area. These photovoltaic

arrays can harness up to 20 kWh of energy, reducing

dependence on traditional sources of electricity.

“The design was outstanding. It is a building that we are proud of and what I really appreciate is EUA’s ability to balance our tight budget and the innovation. That is the principle strength of their team. We wanted a green, LEED certified building and within a budget we could afford. We got both.” -Kevin Brunner, City Manager, City of Whitewater
