the WHISTLER low-downUnder two hours’ drive from Vancouver along the scenic Sea to Sky Highway,

Whistler is the perfect four season destination for active vacationers who want it all.

Winter and early spring offer some of the world’s finest alpine and Nordic terrain, lit by the afterglow of Olympic glory. Whistler Blackcomb offers some of the most fantastic skiing in North America with over 8,100 metres of ski terrain ranging from beginner to expert. Sleigh rides, snowshoeing, skating and snowmobiling are great, family-friendly alternatives to a day on the slopes.

Spring, summer and fall feature outdoor fun on five lakes, four championship golf courses and the largest lift serviced mountain bike park north of California, providing access to a seemingly endless variety of biking terrain—from high alpine single-track to paved cruiser paths. Heli-hiking, fly fishing, glacier scrambling and rock climbing are also popular ways to work up a healthy summer sweat.

The area lakes are perfect for canoeing, swimming, fishing, paddleboarding and relaxing on the sunny beach. Local rivers are a white-water rafting enthusiast’s dream. For some high-flying fun, zipline from tree to tree and experience the old growth forest from a new perspective.

Whistler offers unparalleled golfing with four championship golf courses designed by four of the world’s top course architects. It is consistently rated the number 1 destination for golf in Canada and should easily make the cut for a golf getaway.

Blessed with incredible scenery, Whistler’s wilderness also offers fantastic hiking, as well as opportunities to learn about the ecology of diverse ecosystems from experienced naturalist guides. A couple or family could easily spend a week exploring the Whistler area’s hundreds of miles of trails and ancient cedar forests. Whistler’s Peak 2 Peak gondola gracefully lifts hikers above treeline to access dozens of high alpine hikes and walks through meadows ablaze with wildflowers throughout the height of summer.

Après ski, bike or hike, a stroll through Whistler’s charming pedestrian-only alpine village reveals over 200 high end shops and stores, luxury spas offering a full range of therapeutic wellness treatments, and dozens of restaurants serving everything from gourmet cuisine to rustic home cooked meals. The resort’s vibrant nightlife is also a huge draw, along with a year-round calendar of festivals, parties and special events including the culinary weekend, Cornicopia and the thrilling downhill mountain bike challenge known as Crankworx.

Toss in the huge selection of accommodation ranging from luxurious 5-star hotels, resorts and chalets, to affordable, value-oriented condos and townhomes and you’ve got a family-friendly active vacation destination that’s second to none in North America.

MEET THE LOCALS

CUZSki Rental Shop Owner, 27 years in Whistler

Life is short…Enjoy it while you can!

In 1986, the temptation of awesome skiing and incredible powder days lured me to Whistler after living in Lake Louise, Alberta for several years. With an abundance of outdoor sports available right outside your door, Whistler is an awe-some place to live and play.

When I arrived in Whistler in the mid 1980s, it was a lot smaller than it is today. The lay-out of Whistler Village with its many restaurants, bars and stores looks relatively similar. However, neither the Upper Village, nor Village North existed. At Creekside, there were only a few accommodations and a couple of restaurants: the Southside Diner; RimRock Cafe; and Dusty’s Cantina (which was the first place I worked in Whistler). Today, Creekside Village is fully developed with hotels, condos, shops and restaurants as well as a new six-pack, high-speed gondola, which whisks skiers up Whistler Mountain. The community of Whistler is now home to 10,000+ sports-minded, active people.

Since 1992, I have been the owner of a successful ski, snowboard and bike rental company in Whistler — Spicy Sports. We have two locations in Whistler: our original shop at the Blackcomb base (next to the Wizard Chair) and our Whistler Village store (located by the bus and taxi loop). At Spicy, we have a large selection of men’s, women’s and kids’ high-performance rental equipment for all types of skiing and boarding.

From powder to groomers, whatever the mountain conditions may be, Spicy has the snowboard or ski! Our certified and experienced staff always recommend the best ski or snowboard to enjoy the day’s mountain conditions. If the conditions change, we encourage you to switch up your rental equipment

for no extra charge! All of our ski and snowboard rental equipment is tuned and waxed daily. Our tuning centre offers superb tune-up and repair services at unbeatable prices.

In the winter, you can find me skiing powder in the high alpine or cruising the groomers around the mountains. With the Peak 2 Peak Gondola connecting the two ski hills, it’s easy to access terrain on both mountains. At the end of the day, Merlins or Milestones Bar are great apres hang-outs for beverages and snacks. On the weekends, The Hair Farmers (a local band) perform entertaining apres shows — a must see for all who visit Whistler!

In the summer, I hike and mountain bike as much as possible. Hiking at the ski hill is amazing! The lifts grant you access to a massive network of trails that allow you to explore the spectacular alpine. Hike amidst towering peaks, hanging glaciers, serene lakes and wildflower-painted slopes. Enjoy a day hike or head out for a multi-day trek in the back country.

Whistler’s mountain bike park is beyond compare and guarantees unbelievable, life-keeping memories! It offers a little something for all levels of riders. Whistler’s single-track valley riding is also second to none. Epic trails allow you to access every part of the valley, including the paved trail from Function Junction to Emerald Estates.

It’s difficult to imagine living anywhere else. Most people who live in Whistler can’t leave here for any extended period of time. Those who do usually filter back to enjoy the AWESOMENESS that Whistler has to offer!

CANADA’S TOP RESORT

SKIING & SNOWBOARDINGTime and time again, Whistler Blackcomb is voted one of the best ski resorts in the world.

Tastefully blending into the gorgeous natural environment, it’s charming alpine pedestrian only village offers fine dining, vibrant nightlife, revitalizing spas and luxurious hotels.

Heaps of snow blanket its 200+ runs and fill its 16 alpine bowls.Take your pick of powder tree runs, rhythmic moguls, silky groomers and expansive bowls. Whistler Blackcomb boasts 8,000+ acres of awesome terrain, 37 lifts, an insane annual snowfall of 11.74 metres (38.5 feet) and a tremendous season that stretches from November to May. A mecca for skiers and snowboarders of all levels, Whistler Blackcomb is also consistently recognized as one of the most family-friendly ski resorts in North America.

Home to Star Athletes

Whistler Blackcomb is home to some of the best athletes in the world.

Cruising and shredding the slopes are legendary ski racers Steve Podborski and Rob Boyd, big-mountain skiing pioneer Eric Pehota, as well as the world’s first Olympic snowboard gold medalist Ross Rebagliati. Former freestyle skier and Olympic gold medalist Ashleigh McIvor and young talent Maëlle Ricker, who won a gold medal in snowboard cross at the 2010 Olympics, also call Whistler Blackcomb home.

Ski Mecca & Olympic Host

The story of this world-renowned ski resort began in 1960.

Enchanted by the dream to host the 1968 Olympic Games, a group of Vancouver businessmen embarked on the ambitious goal of developing a ski area on London Mountain (today’s Whistler Mountain), a rugged terrain lacking roads, a water system and power.

Local Lowdown on Skiing at Whistler Blackcomb

Serving 10 years as a Whistler ski patrol and numerous additional years as a ski guide, Pete Shoniker knows his go-to sweet spots on a powder day.

According to Shoniker, when the snow starts to fly, Ruby’s Bowl on Blackcomb Mountain offers the deepest fresh tracks. Accessed via a short boot-pack up Spanky’s Ladder, the steep runs in Ruby’s Bowl don’t get shred out as quickly as the rest of the mountain. Little sun exposure on this north-facing, big and open bowl ensures premium quality snow. To boot, when storms blow snow into this sheltered bowl, it accumulates big time. A 10-cm powder day can translate as 20 cm of fresh snow in Ruby’s Bowl! For those who love tree skiing on a powder day, head to Robertson’s on Whistler Mountain. Widely-spaced trees with openings and steep pitches are a recipe for euphoria.

Leading from the Peak down to Creekside, Whistler Mountain’s Peak to Creek is a favourite groomed run amongst

At the helm of this challenging initiative was Franz Wilhelmsen, a Norwegian native who would become the founding father of Canada’s largest ski resort. Featuring a four-person gondola, a double chairlift, two T-bars and a day lodge, the mountain opened to skiers in February 1966.

As the years passed, Whistler Mountain developed an unshakable reputation as one of the best ski resorts on the planet, receiving an abundance of prestigious awards. In the mid 1990s, Whistler Mountain was named the number one ski resort in North America by Skiing Magazine. The resort secured this acclaimed top spot for 13 years in a row. In 2010, after five decades and four Olympic bids, Franz Wilhelmsen’s dream of hosting the Olympic Winter Games became a realty.

Healthy Rivalry to Happy Union

In 1980, neighbouring Blackcomb Mountain opened with five triple chairs and an additional 1,240 vertical metres (4, 067 feet) of epic skiing.

Constantly attempting to outshine the other, a healthy rivalry ensued between the two independently-owned ski resorts. The result — longer vertical, bigger terrain, more runs, additional lifts and unbeatable skiing. In 1997, Whistler Mountain Ski Corporation and Intrawest Corporation (which owned Blackcomb Mountain) merged.

Peak 2 Peak Gondola

In 2008, Whistler Blackcomb took skiing to a whole new level with the opening of the world-record-breaking, 4.4-km Peak 2 Peak Gondola, connecting Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.

Whistler Heli-Skiing

As the chopper’s blades spin faster and faster, your adrenaline-fueled excitement grows.

Suddenly you’ve lifted off the ground and you’re soaring above B.C.’s rugged, alpine wilderness. You land in the midst of a quiet, sugar-white world, surrounded by staggering mountain peaks. Other than your small group of powder-loving thrill seekers, you’re completely alone out here. You watch in anticipation as your group’s heli-skiing guide cuts a graceful track through the feather-light, sparkling snow. Finally, you point your skis down the fall line and dive in. Powdery snow sprays up over your ski tips and brushes your legs like a wave rolling in from the ocean. Whether you are a rookie or a veteran, heli-skiing in Whistler’s incredible backcountry is bound to be unforgettable.

A Treasured Canadian Sport

In a country famous for its vast and awesome wilderness, snowmobiling is a treasured Canadian winter sport.

With 112,000 km of trails and 700+ snowmobiling clubs across the country, sledding inspires people to enjoy the great outdoors. As one of the easiest, motorized recreational activities to learn, snowmobiling is a fun, family-friendly outdoor activity.

Widely considered the father of snowmobiling, Quebec native Joseph-Armand Bombardier developed a propeller-driven sled in 1922. As a teen, Bombardier’s father gave him an old Model-T Ford. The young inventor attached the motor to a four-person sleigh, then installed a wooden airplane propeller on the drive shaft behind the transmission.

Over the years, Bombardier continuously improved his snowmobile, and in 1937, he received his first patent. (Carl J. Eliason of Wisconsin was the first to be issued a snowmobile patent in 1927.) In 1959, Bombardier began commercial production of the ski-doo snowmobile. Allowing people to easily and efficiently commute over a snow-covered winter landscape, snowmobiling quickly enjoyed widespread use.

Train Wreck & Runaway Train Trails

Train Wreck is a mostly flat trail that follows along the rumbling Cheakamus River, leading you through old-growth forest and sunny clearings.

Several decades ago, a train that derailed here scattered its boxcars among the giant trees and along the Cheakamus River. Strewn over several hundred metres, seven abandoned boxcars remain crushed and twisted against the trees and clinging to the cliff above the river. Colourful graffiti art bring these rusted boxcars to life, giving this trail a funky, artsy vibe. Featuring gnarly roots, challenging rocks, steep ladders and wooden bridges, Train Wreck is a must ride. While Train Wreck is about six kilometres roundtrip, you can extend your ride by taking Runaway Train.

Directions

Drive eight kilometres south of Whistler Village to Function Junction. Turn right on Alpha Lake Road, drive across the train tracks for 200 metres. At the sharp bend in the road, park behind the store or market on the left and look for the Flank Trail sign. Pick up a trail map at any of the local bike stores or visit www.worca.com (Whistler Off Road Cycling Association). There are also excellent trail maps on the Trail Maps App: http://trailmapps.com.

It’s Business Time (a.k.a. Duncan’s Trail)

This exhilarating ride is a Whistler locals’ favourite.

The brain child of a popular Whistler ski patroller and avid mountain biker named Duncan Mackenzie who died tragically in an backcountry avalanche, It’s Business Time was completed by friends as a fitting way to honour his memory.

Today, their determination to celebrate a great friend and an amazing guy can be felt by all who enjoy this amazing ride.

It’s Business Time (known by many locals as Duncan’s Trail) is a thrilling, speedy rid that will seduce you into experiencing it again and again. Completed in 2012, this well-designed 2.6-km trail features plenty of exhilarating downhills and some steep, anaerobic uphill climbs. Especially challenging are its large rock slabs, tight corners and technical features. If you find this ride more challenging than you’re prepared to tackle, turn off at the AM/PM trailhead, which takes you back to the access road.

Directions

It’s Business Time starts at the interpretive forest parking lot at Cheakamus Lake. From Whistler Village, drive south for about eight kilometres. Turn left at the Function Junction traffic lights. On your left, you’ll see a parking lot. Ride your bike up the access road (Microwave Climb) for 1.7 km. After a few steep switchbacks and past the water reservoir, look for a trailhead on your left. If you reach Tunnel Vision trail, you’ve gone too far.

A River Runs Through It

Popular among locals, this well-crafted trail winds its way through the forest in the valley bottom.

Featuring ramps, bridges, ladders, teeter totters and even a double teeter totter (you have to see it to believe it), this intoxicating ride borders on addictive. If you’re not into some of the more daring stunts on this advanced trail, there’s an easier, blue line that bypasses them. Stop and watch seasoned riders tackle the stunts, then take the less demanding blue trail. Divided into two sections (River North

and River South), A River Runs Through It flows best when you ride the trail from north to south. Finish at Rainbow Park and cool off with a dive into Alta Lake.

The name A River Runs Through It was inspired by a log that leads riders across the river. In the past, the log entailed a white-knuckle ride with the threat of an eight-foot fall into rocks and water. Today there are railings and ropes on either side for a safer, less stressful ride across the river.

Directions

One of the trail access points is a well-marked trailhead located on Westside Road, across the street from the Rainbow Lake parking lot. Moving Meditation

Hiking is one of the most popular, accessible and fun summer activities that allow us to connect with nature, melting away stress and invigorating our bodies and minds.

Surrounded by majestic mountains and untouched wilderness, hiking also often sparks our creativity and inspiration. (It’s not uncommon for a brilliant business idea or a solution to a plaguing personal problem to pop into our minds while we’re out on the trail.) So lace up your hiking shoes, dig out your backpack and take a hike in Whistler’s wonderful backcountry.

A Hiker’s Paradise

Located in the Fitzsimmons Range of the Coast Mountains and neighbouring Garibaldi Provincial Park, Whistler is truly a hiking paradise.

You can explore trails beneath soaring, snow-crowned peaks. And discover pristine mountain lakes, meandering rivers and glistening glaciers. In July and August, wildflowers paint the alpine landscape with deep purple, lemon yellow, magenta pink and strawberry red. At this time of year it’s common to spot whistling marmots (big squirrel-looking characters), black tailed deer and black bears. In the valley, you can hike through old-growth forests and visit roaring waterfalls. In Whistler, you’ll find a bounty of well-marked trails for every level of hiker.

Please note that it’s common to encounter snow in May and June when hiking in the Whistler area. Visit the Whistler Information Centre for current information on local hikes and snow conditions. Remember to pack sunscreen, water, snacks, extra layers of clothing and a camera. Be prepared for anything and everything by carrying emergency supplies and rain gear.Listed below are some of our favourite Whistler hikes.

HikingAs the snow gradually melts a new and exciting season opens up.

As the snow gradually melts and our skis have been stored away until next year, a new and exciting season opens up to us. Throughout the warmer months, Whistler’s mountains continue to be a mam-moth park for those of us who love to play in the outdoors.

Rainbow Lake Trail

Located minutes from Whistler Village, the Rainbow Lake Trail offers an awesome escape to nature.

Rainbow Lake Hike is a simple recipe for relaxation and rejuvenation. Hike through a dense rainforest and along a crashing creek. Visit a beautiful waterfall and a serene mountain lake.

Climbing about 850 metres (2,789 feet) over eight kilometres (five miles), this trail is the perfect day hike, taking the average hiker five to six hours round-trip. Winding its way through the forest, this well-maintained trail features bridges and boardwalks, leading you over a creek and marshlands.

If you’re keen to camp or hike further, walk the trail around Rainbow Lake for an extra three kilometres to Hanging Lake, where you’ll find camp spots. Located nine kilometres past Rainbow Lake, you’ll find another mountain jewel called Madeley Lake. The trails to Hanging and Madeley Lakes are not as clearly marked so grab a trail map at the Visitor Centre in Whistler Village.

Please note that Rainbow Lake and the creek along the trail are part of Whistler’s drinking water supply. As a result, dogs are not permitted on this hike. Swimming in Rainbow Lake is not encouraged, and camping is prohibited.

Cheakamus Lake Hike

Resembling a gigantic mirror, Cheakamus Lake reflects its mountain-fringed shoreline in its glassy water.

While Cheakamus Lake is a relatively short walk, its astounding beauty makes you feel as if you’re in the remote wilderness, far away from home. Studies have shown that we are calmer and happier humans when we’re in nature.

With almost no elevation gain, this three-kilometre hike is a quick and easy way to tap into your inner happy. It’s also a perfect hike for families with small children.

Along your walk, the sweet scent of old-growth cedar trees and the relaxing rumble of Cheakamus River accompany you. Once you reach Cheakamus Lake, pause for a picnic while enjoying the view of the cobalt-blue, glacier-fed lake and the jaw-dropping mountains that embrace it.

The trail continues along the lake’s north shore for an extra four kilometres, where you’ll discover numerous quiet beaches.

Directions

From Whistler Village, drive south for about eight kilometres. Turn left at the Function Junction traffic lights. After 300 metres, turn left before the bridge. Follow the dirt road for about eight kilometres to the end of the road. There’s an outhouse at the trailhead.

Garibaldi Lake & Black Tusk Hike

Few lakes in British Columbia are as magnetizing as Garibaldi Lake. Located in Garibaldi Provincial Park, this dazzling, aquamarine, glacial lake is cradled by magnificent Mount Garibaldi, Sphinx Glacier and ancient volcanoes.

The Garibaldi Lake trail zigzags up the mountain through a rich forest packed with Douglas fir trees. Consisting of what may feel like never-ending switchbacks, this smooth and wide trail boasts a moderate, relaxed incline. Along the way, several view points reveal inspiring mountain vistas and exploding waterfalls. However, the real reward for your effort is evident when you reach Garibaldi Lake. Located in the sub-alpine and circled by staggering mountains, Garibaldi Lake shimmers a stunning, blue-green. Thankfully, the incredible views make the repetitive switchbacks totally worth it!

Garibaldi Lake’s brilliant turquoise colour is the result of glacial flour in the meltwater from Sphinx Glacier and Sentinel Glacier, the lake’s two primary inflows. On a hot day, you might witness courageous hikers plunging into the icy cold water for a swim. For those looking to overnight, there are about fifty campsites located along the lake’s shore and in the surrounding forest.

Directions

Drive 25 minutes south of Whistler. Look for the big, blue parks sign reading “Garibaldi Lake” on the side of the highway. Turn off the highway and follow the road to the parking.

Black Tusk Hike

Arguably one of the most spectacular hikes in British Columbia, the scenery that greets you on the Black Tusk Hike is extraordinary.

Visible from the the Sea to Sky highway and the top of Whistler Mountain, the Black Tusk appears as a colossal, black steeple that juts into the sky. Similar to a grandiose, towering cathedral in a historic city, the Black Tusk demands your attention and admiration from far and near.

As you leave Garibaldi Lake behind you, the trail leads you into the glorious alpine, where rocky terrain and sweeping mountain views replace vegetation and forest. Surrounded by massive mountains with sky-scraping peaks and luminous glaciers sparkling in the sun, this hike feels as if you’ve escaped to another world…and in some ways, you have. The awe-inspiring landscape here is a place of extinct and ancient volcanoes.

Approximately 170,000 years ago, volcanic activity produced a lava dome inside a volcanic cone. The exterior cinder cone (which dated more than one million years old), was more susceptible to erosion, than the internal lava dome. While the inner lava dome hardened, the outer cinder cone crumbled. This exposed, ancient lava dome still stands today. We call it the Black Tusk.

The Black Tusk Trail is a 29-km (18-mile) round-trip hike, which demands exceptional physical (and mental) stamina and strength. Thankfully, hiking in this cool volcanic landscape amidst unbelievable views is worth the effort! With a total elevation gain of 1,740 metres (5,708 feet), this hike also offers an unbeatable, bird’s eye view of Garibaldi Lake, a turquoise jewel in the sub-alpine.

While it is possible to complete the Black Tusk Hike in a day, it requires about 10 hours round-trip. Many people prefer to break the hike into two days, camping at Garibaldi Lake or

Taylor Meadows. The climb to the top of the Black Tusk is not recommended by BC Parks. It is a steep and dangerous scramble up loose rocks.

Directions

Drive 25 minutes south of Whistler. Look for the big, blue parks sign reading “Garibaldi Lake” on the side of the highway. Turn off the highway and follow the road to the parking. This is the most popular route. Alternatively, there is also a trailhead at the start of the Cheakamus Lake Hike. (See Cheakamus Lake Hike information above.)

Yet relatively few people also think of Whistler as an awesome beach destination. Home to five pristine lakes and numerous sandy beaches, Whistler is a fantastic place to enjoy some of Canada’s favourite summer pastimes — kayaking, canoeing, relaxing at the beach and barbecuing with friends at the lake. On a hot summer day, nothing beats diving into one of Whistler’s clean, crisp mountain lakes.

Whistler’s lakes will keep the entire family entertained all day with their sandy beaches, swimming docks, grassy parks, kids play areas, BBQs, concession stands, and much more. Local beaches are safe to swim in and the water quality of Whistler’s major beaches is monitored closely. Many have sandy beaches to help you cool off in summer.

The most popular Whistler area beaches are found in Lakeside Park, Alpha Lake Park, home to the “Owl’s Nest” play structure, dock and sandy beach, Lost Lake Park, situated around tranquil Lost Lake, and Rainbow Park, featuring a sandy beach, charming wharf and terrific amenities. Dog lovers flock to Canine Cove, across from Lost Lake Park, where canines are welcome to swim off leash. Boating is also popular, but motor boating is only permitted on Green Lake and safety is strictly monitored and enforced.

Biking the Valley Trail, a 40-km network of paved paths, conveniently accesses Whistler’s parks, lakes and beaches. For some parks (such as Lost Lake), a shuttle bus is available. Check for details at the Whistler Visitor Centre in the village. The next time you’re in Whistler to hike, golf or bike, be sure to visit a local beach for some sunshine therapy and soulful relaxation.

Alta Lake

With parks embracing its north, south and east shores, Alta Lake is an ideal spot for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddle boarding and lounging on the beach.

On a hot day, try swimming to the floating dock to cool down. Plenty of picnic tables, barbecue pits and an expansive grassy area make Rainbow Park perfect for a picnic or barbecue. Throughout the summer, Rainbow Park is a social hub for Whistler locals, who meet here to play beach volleyball, toss a frisbee or barbecue dinner with friends. There is also a concession stand, flush toilets and a picnic shelter.

Developed in 1914, Rainbow Lodge on Alta Lake is what first put Whistler on the map. Many decades before Whistler Blackcomb became one of the biggest and best ski resorts in the world, Rainbow Lodge was a well-known fishing destination. Some of the original century-old cabins remain in the park today. To reach Rainbow Park, jump on your bike for a pleasant ride on the easy-cruising Valley Trail. (About a 20-minute bike from Whistler Village.)

Also located on the shores of Alta Lake are Wayside Park and Lakeside Park. Both parks have small beaches, docks, picnic tables and barbecue pits. After skiing, biking or shopping, visit the swank Champagne Lounge for fresh Pacific oysters served with a glass of bubbly or your favourite cocktail. (Between 3-5pm, a dozen oysters is under $10.) On Saturday nights, get ready to shake it on the dance floor when the Champagne Lounge transforms into a popular disco.

Elements Urban Tapas

Admittedly, I have a weakness for tapas. So perhaps it’s no surprise that when my brother, a former Whistler resident, introduced me to Elements Urban Tapas, I instantly fell in love.

As it turns out, I’m not alone. Since 2005 when this restaurant opened its doors, locals have consistently voted Elements Whistler’s best tapas restaurant.

Tapas are designed to be enjoyed and shared with friends. Cover your table with plates of maple roasted root vegetables, sesame-crusted seared ahi tuna, pan seared wild BC salmon, mini venison burgers and bison petite tender three ways. In the evening, the dining room has a chic, cosmopolitan vibe. However, Elements is more than just a hip dinner spot. Awarded second place for “best breakfast restaurant in Whistler”, Elements is also a great choice for breakfast or brunch. The top breakfast award was given to Wild Wood Pacific Bistro, which happens to be owned by the same local proprietors.

Sushi Village

A Whistler restaurant scene icon, Sushi Village is also a social hub.

One of the most popular restaurants in Whistler, it specializes in fresh sushi and pitchers of sake margaritas, as well as a fun and casual atmosphere that lures diners back again and again.

Founded in the mid 1980s by three friends who swapped their city lives for endless days of great skiing, Sushi Village was only the sixth restaurant to open its doors in Whistler. Today, there are over one hundred places to eat and drink in this bustling resort town.

Overlooking Mountain Square from its second floor venue, Sushi Village is only steps from the gondolas. If you can’t spot the restaurant, locals and most tourists can point you in the right direction. Tables are allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you’re dining with a large party, call ahead and ask about a private tatami room.

Tandoori Grill

The executive chef at this authentic Tandoori restaurant has been tantalizing taste buds in British Columbia for several decades.

In 1987, Sharanjit Kahlon founded the Original Tandoori Kitchen Group in Vancouver. Ten years later, the Tandoori Grill in Whistler began serving its succulent chicken, fish, prawns and lamb, as well as its incredible curry dishes. Cooking over charcoal in a clay-based Tandoor oven was a tradition introduced to India by the Moghal Kings. With this technique, meat is marinated in spices, grilled on skewers in a Tandoor oven and completed with a quick stovetop finish.

Cure Lounge & Patio

Nestled on the shore of a quiet mountain lake, the luxurious Nita Lake Lodge’s Cure Lounge & Patio is the ideal place to escape the buzz of Whistler Village.

In the summer, you can enjoy a casual meal and a glass of wine on the lakefront patio. Other than a few mountainside homes and locals walking their dogs or riding bikes on the paved path along the lake, it’s just you and Whistler’s spectacular wilderness. In the winter, warm up after skiing or boarding by the gigantic fireplace while sipping a hot beverage or a thirst-quenching micro-brewed beer. Combining quality food, a stunning vista and a friendly, relaxed ambiance, this palette-pleasing hideaway is hugely popular among tourists and locals.

Creekbread

Located in Whistler’s Creekside neighbourhood, Creekbread makes possibly the best pizza we’ve ever tasted.

When you walk through the front door, the friendly vibe and mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked pizzas greets you with open arms.

Baked in a wood-fired, hand-built oven, Creekbread’s thin-crust pizzas are topped with natural and organic ingredients. Choose from pizzas created with house made nitrate-free, maple-fennel sausage, hardwood smoked free-range pork shoulder, free-range chicken and nitrate-free pepperoni. You’ll also find several unique vegetarian pizzas, such as the Pemberton Potato Pie made with roasted potatoes from neighbouring Pemberton, organic rosemary cream sauce, organic spinach and three different cheeses. The restaurant’s meat and dairy free pizza is a dream come true for vegans everywhere. Gluten-free devotees will find tantalizing

fare here too. Wash down your pizza with hand-squeezed lemonade or an organic apple cider.

In a place where food is considered sacred and the vibe is big-hearted and welcoming, Creekbread is not only a paradise for pizza lovers, but also an uncomplicated and relaxed sanctuary.

Southside Diner

For some, it might be surprising to find this down-to-earth diner in a resort town famous for its ultra-fancy fine-dining restaurants. But understated can be very appealing, making this laid-back eatery very popular.

It’s safe to assume that the majority of locals in Whistler have eaten at the Southside Diner. Under new ownership since 2000, this beloved establishment has been around since the early 1980s, appealing to the low-maintenance, easy-going crowd that appreciates good food at reasonable prices.

Famous for its hearty breakfasts, the Southside Diner is the best place to nurse a throbbing head after partying in Whistler. And its owners, former managers of the Savage Beagle nightclub and Citta Bistro, ensure that every patron knows the rules. Among my favourites: “High maintenance customers may be subject to a $2 surcharge during peak times” and “Unattended children will be given a free kitten and an espresso.”

Alpine Cafe

Situated six kilometres north of Whistler Village, the Alpine Cafe is located well off the beaten tourist path.

Every morning, this modest coffee shop is visited by a continuous stream of locals, grabbing a cup of organic coffee and a pastry on their way to work. On a relaxed, non-ski day, the Alpine Cafe is one of my favourite places to enjoy breakfast. For lunch or dinner, choose from delicious soups, burgers and pastas. Opened in 2004, the Alpine Cafe runs a successful catering service, providing everything from mountaintop wedding meals to bagged lunches for hundreds of people.

Dusty’s Bar & BBQ

Long before the gondola, condos and hotels existed in Whistler’s Creekside, Dusty’s Bar & BBQ was quenching thirsts and delivering après entertainment for locals and tourists.

Located at the base of the Creekside Gondola, this popular establishment is a terrific place for lunch, après-ski drinks or a late-night good time. Wood beams, towering ceilings and an over-sized fireplace give Dusty’s an authentic mountain lodge atmosphere. On a sunny day, join fellow skiers, boarders and mountain bikers on one of the sun-soaked patios.

Arguably the best place in town to for barbecued fare, Dusty’s has perfected the art of fire cooking meat so tender that it effortlessly falls apart in your mouth. In the name of research, Dusty’s chefs even embarked on a nine-day, 30-restaurant tour deep within southern US barbecue country. Kids are welcome at Dusty’s until 8pm.

19 Merlin’s Bar & Grill

An essential ingredient in a true Canadian ski resort town is an off-the-hook après-ski bar where patrons can let loose and get rowdy (in some cases, very rowdy).

Located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain in the Upper Village, Merlin’s Bar & Grill is a rustic venue decorated with old-school ski lifts and animal antlers. Boasting an infectious house party vibe and home to the Hair Farmers, a popular local band, Merlin’s offers a memorable après-ski scene.

On a sunny day, hang out with friends on the large patio. Devour heaping plates of nachos and rehydrate with a cold beer (or two or three). As evening turns into night, it’s likely that you’ll spot another ski town staple — the shot ski lined up with a row of shots.

Ziplining

Have you ever imagined the freedom and thrill of flying like a bird? Well here you go – this is your chance to experience it!

With Ziptrek you will soar high above the ground from tree to tree through old growth forest on beautiful Cougar Mountain. Ziptrek’s exceptional guides are passionate about sharing their knowledge about the surrounding forest and the various ecosystems in Whistler.

We love that each tour consists of multiple ziplines and numerous tree-top bridges and last from two to four hours. For adrenaline seekers, we dare you to try the Eagle Tour, which starts at Whistler Mid-Station and includes a mammoth drop of more than 20 stories to get your heart racing! If the zipping part really isn’t your style, you could opt to take the canopy walking tour which is a series of suspension bridges and viewing platforms high above the forest floor. Maybe not as thrilling, but still pretty spectacular,

and a great option for younger kids. Best part? You can do this in summer and in winter!

Whistler Blackcomb Tube Park

It has seven lanes ranging from gentle to steep and all about 1000 feet long. We think this makes a great evening out after

For the younger set, for some great apres activities and for those looking for a slower-paced day, we recommend any of the following activities:

Lost Lake LodgeTucked away from busy Whistler Village, this mountain retreat is close to a golf course and forested trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Horstman HouseLocated at the foot of Blackcomb Mountain, this boutique resort allows you to ski “home”. Relax by the fireplace or unwind in the rooftop hot tub.

a day skiing or snowboarding. We love this tube park!

The music and fire pit give the tube park a really fun and lively atmosphere. The best part for the kids? There no need to drag your tube up the hill – in Whistler, we have a conveyor belt to transport you back to the top to do it all over again! (or maybe that’s the best part for Mom and Dad?!)

- Sleigh Rides

If you are looking for a change of pace from the ski hill and the bustling village scene in Whistler, we recommend an old-fashioned, horse-drawn sleigh ride.

A sleigh ride is the perfect family outing – something your children will remember for years. This idyllic winter activity can also also be very romantic. (Recall the Sex and the City episode when Carrie and her Russian beau floated through Central Park on a sleigh?) An evening ride is the perfect finish to a busy day on the hill. You’ll feel like you’re re-living a scene from an old novel or movie as you as the beautiful Percheron horses guide you through the quiet forest. Snuggle up under a cozy blanket and enjoy the ride.

see. This unforgettable 11-minute journey (4.4 km) puts you slap bang in the middle of an alpine paradise in winter and summer so it’s one of the first things we recommend that visitors to Whistler do.

In the ski world, the Peak 2 Peak Gondola is the Lamborghini of lifts. The first lift to join two side-by-side mountains (Whistler and Blackcomb), the Peak 2 Peak Gondola is the highest lift on the planet (a mind-boggling 436 metres/1,430 feet) with the longest unsupported span in the world.

At the summit, be sure to have lunch in the restaurant – the views are spectacular! In the summer the gondola provides access to over 50 kilometres of hiking and walking trails ranging from easy to challenging.

- Outdoor Skating

In a country dominated by vast wilderness, crisp winters and an obsession with hockey, skating is our ultimate winter activity.

In Whistler, picturesque Alta Lake and Green Lake are popular spots to skate on a frozen mountain lake circled by breathtaking mountains and a snow-cloaked forest. This is a magical winter experience. Alternatively, the outdoor skating rink at the Olympic Plaza, located in Whistler Village, is perfect for families with young children. Skate rentals are available at the rink.
