WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS PRELUDE Come, Let Us Reason Ken Medema Julia Nelson, piano PRAYER OF THE DAY THE REVEREND JOHN ZEIGLER

God of great mercy and righteous judgment, You have told us what is right, but that doesn’t make it easy. Help us, then, Lord, to do justice, even when it costs something. Transform our bitterness into a love of kindness. Lead us, as beloved children, to walk with you humbly and so to love one another. May our lives be the symbol of your presence the world needs now. Amen.

CALL TO CONFESSION THE REVEREND JAKE CLAWSON God calls to us in the silence of our hearts. God calls to us in the Scriptures written that we might believe. God calls to us in the cries of the downtrodden. Let us hear and respond in humility and hope.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Oh Lord, God of covenant and steadfast love, we have sinned and done wrong, turning aside from your way. We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our leaders, our ancestors, and to all people. Righteousness is on your side, O Lord, but open shame falls on us, because of the ways we have failed you and one another. Nevertheless, to you, our Lord and God, belong mercy and forgiveness. So, listen to the prayers of your servants and to our appeal, and for your own sake, Lord, let your face shine upon our desolation and melted hearts. Incline your ear, O my God, and hear. Open your eyes and look at our poverty of spirit. We do not present our supplication before you on the ground of our righteousness, but on the ground of your great mercies. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, listen and act and do not delay! For your own sake, O my God, because your people bear your name…

Oh God of the dreamers, of the prophets, of the visioneers, God of the doomsayers and hopers beyond hope, God of the just and the unjust, God of rich darkness and blinding light, give us grace to see you now, though your hand be hidden and our way be dark. Grant us, we pray, courage to stand before you when you arrive with a word of challenge, a word of trouble, a word of hope. We are ready, Lord. Make us ever ready. Amen.

ANTHEM Prelude from Cello Suite #1 in G Major J. S. Bach Luke Sieve, trombone SERMON READING Micah 2 Alas for those who devise wickedness and evil deeds on their beds! When the morning dawns, they perform it, because it is in their power. They covet fields, and seize them; houses, and take them away; they oppress householder and house, people and their inheritance. Therefore, thus says the Lord: Now, I am devising against this family an evil from which you cannot remove your necks; and you shall not walk haughtily, for it will be an evil time. On that day they shall take up a taunt-song against you, and wail with bitter lamentation, and say, ‘We are utterly ruined; the Lord alters the inheritance of my people; how he removes it from me! Among our captors he parcels out our fields.’ Therefore you will have no one to cast the line by lot

in the assembly of the Lord. ‘Do not preach’—thus they preach— ‘one should not preach of such things; disgrace will not overtake us.’ Should this be said, O house of Jacob? Is the Lord’s patience exhausted? Are these his doings? Do not my words do good to one who walks uprightly? But you rise up against my people as an enemy; you strip the robe from the peaceful, from those who pass by trustingly with no thought of war. The women of my people you drive out from their pleasant houses; from their young children you take away my glory for ever. Arise and go; for this is no place to rest, because of uncleanness that destroys with a grievous destruction. If someone were to go about uttering empty falsehoods, saying, ‘I will preach to you of wine and strong drink’, such a one would be the preacher for this people! I will surely gather all of you, O Jacob, I will gather the survivors of Israel; I will set them together like sheep in a fold, like a flock in its pasture; it will resound with people. The one who breaks out will go up before them; they will break through and pass the gate, going out by it. Their king will pass on before them, the Lord at their head.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

PASTORAL PRAYER/LORD’S PRAYER (DEBT/DEBTORS) THE REVEREND JOHN ZEIGLER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 THE REVEREND JAKE CLAWSON From now on, therefore, we regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Amen.
