‘Just doing my job’Rodriguez named Marine of the Year. z pg. 2

By DEBRA VAUGHN

No one is more surprised about the new Marine of the Year than the man who took

the honors, Sgt. Frank Rodriguez

Jr.He teaches young Marines

how to fix EA-6B Prowler engines as an instructor at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island’s Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit. The Marines plan to continue flying Prowlers for a

few more years.“It’s definitely unreal,” he

said. “I’m like, wow, I didn’t think anybody noticed. I was just doing my job and making sure it got done right.”

His bosses noticed.“He’s got the best work

ethic I’ve seen, especially in a young sergeant,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. Ken Owens.

Rodriguez puts in long hours and takes on tasks out-side of his regular duties. He’s a skillful teacher and a Marine with impeccable integrity, Owens said.

Rodriguez, originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, decid-ed he wanted to join the mili-tary after Sept. 11. He was a senior in high school, and he wanted to do something for his country.

He enlisted with delayed entry, but it ended up being

far more delayed than he intended because he broke his arm in an ATV accident. The Marines wouldn’t take him until he had surgery to remove a metal plate from his arm.

He also began dating his future wife, Ida, and soon a baby was on the way. He was working at an auto detail-ing shop, trying to scrape by before finally entering boot camp at age 21.

Rodriguez was transferred to NAS Whidbey in 2011. He

and his wife have four boys. He loves his job and would

like to stay in the Marines for his entire career. But he’s reached the ceiling of how long he can stay in his job without a promotion, and there may not be a slot open when he needs it.

For that reason, he said he thinks it might have been bet-ter for a younger Marine to take the honor.

Marine of the Year comes with some perks, including a prime parking spot at his workplace. The blue sign in front of the parking space says “SOY” -- short for Sailor of the Year. Rodriguez joked he’d like to paint it red and replace it with “MOY.”

All the winners receive gift certificates from local businesses, which the fam-ily appreciates with four boys to buy Christmas gifts for. He was also presented with a model of a Prowler and pins for his boys, who were

proud of their father and excited to wear them, said Ida Rodriguez.

Rodriguez was honored along with Logistic Specialist 1st Class Rosmond L. Shaw, Sea Sailor of the Year, and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Wayne Papalski, Shore Sailor of the Year.

The Oak Harbor Navy League and Rotary Club host-ed an award luncheon at the Officers’ Club in December.

A panel of five master chiefs reviewed submissions from individual commands at NAS Whidbey Island, grading them separately before gather-ing to review them for a deci-sion. A 100-point system was used to evaluate the nominees and it was close, said Master Chief Patrick McCullough, who served on the panel.

“If we could give it to every one of them, we definitely would have because that’s just how tight the competition was.”

The stuffed horse that rests on H a r v e y

Lasell’s kitchen counter was a gift he purchased for a grand-child, but it’s no mystery who has derived the most pleasure from the toy.

“Pinch his right ear,” Lasell says to his housekeeper, who accomodates the request but accidently grabs the wrong one.

“His right ear!” Lasell barks out. “Shirley, where did you go to school?”

Lasell gets away with plen-ty from the wooden rock-ing chair in his Oak Harbor home these days. It’s part of the license he’s earned for liv-ing to be a century old.

Reach out to shake Lasell’s hand and you’re bound to grip an “energy stick” instead. The device, which lights up when

electricity is conducted and it works properly, amuses him.

But not as much as when he teases his housekeeper.

“He calls me Shirley. It’s just Sheila,” said Sheila Ryan. “He gives me a hard time.”

Friends and family have come to expect the unex-pected from Lasell, who has maintained his wit and sense of humor while reaching an age associated with longevity.

Lasell, a retired Naval offi-cer and World War II vet-eran, celebrated his 100th birthday in December on two occasions. The first was a gathering in his honor at the Officers Club at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in which local magician JR Russell played a slideshow of Lasell’s life and asked him questions.

“I asked him, ‘Harvey, everyone wants to know, what is the secret to living to 100?’” Russell said.

“He said, ‘Don’t die.’”Lasell’s daughter, Joyce

Kuhn, has her own theories. She said her dad has always

been a proud and determined man, physically fit, indepen-dent and strong-willed, but admits good genes have likely played a role.

Harvey Lasell was born Dec. 20, 1915 in Williamstown, Vt., grew up on a farm, became a keen shot and developed a love of horses at an early age.

He later followed a family tradition by graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy and served 21 years in the Navy, including time aboard the USS Yorktown during the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway in 1942.

His skills as a marksman earned him the Secretary of the Navy’s pistol trophy.

“If I had to describe Harvey,

I’d say that the man is all Navy,” said Lesley Robbins, his longtime friend and neigh-bor. “The Navy has been his life.”

After retiring from the Navy, Lasell spent a second career with Boeing and has lived on a small farm setting in Oak Harbor since 1982.

He lost Betty, his wife of 54 years, in 1994. They had four children, three of whom are still living.

Joyce Kuhn and her hus-band live next door to her

father to help keep an eye on him in his later years.

Kuhn said she continues to be amazed by her dad, who doesn’t wear glasses except for reading, and owns hearing aids but never wears them.

“He’s quite a storyteller,” Kuhn said. “He loves to tell stories. Horses are very impor-tant to him. They still are. He doesn’t have any now. He’s fearless about horses. Many times I just about died a thou-sand deaths because he was out there doing something he

shouldn’t have been doing. He still doesn’t realize that

Oak Harbor lost two of the few remaining female World War II veterans in the area this fall.

Eva Brown, 93, died in October, and her friend and fellow veteran Patricia Ricketts, 96, followed her a month later.

Eva Marie Murdock was born Oct. 13, 1922, in Maynard, Ark. Her parents were tenant farmers, and the family barely scraped by dur-ing the Great Depression.

She first spotted the man she would marry, Raymond Brown, at her high school graduation. He was stand-ing at the back of the room, handsome in his U.S. Army uniform.

She enlisted at age 21 in the Navy WAVES -- Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service.

In an interview with the Whidbey News-Times last year, she said she joined

because all the men around her, including her brother, were enlisting. She wanted to serve her country, too.

“The purpose of our being accepted in the military was so we could replace the men at the desk so they could go to sea duty,” she said. “Some of them were happy to be released from working at a desk. Of course, there were some that resented us.”

The majority were grateful for women joining the ranks and her experience was a good one, Brown said. She worked as a hospital apprentice 1st class.

After two years of service, she used the G.I. Bill to fin-ish her degree. She married Raymond and went on to teach elementary school for the next 35 years in Arkansas and Illinois.

Brown followed her only son, Jim Brown, to Oak Harbor in 1986 to be closer to family.

She continued to take an active role in the community and the Oak Harbor Church of Christ. She served as a vol-unteer for multiple organiza-tions, including for Whidbey General Hospital’s hospice program and the Senior Center.

Patricia Collier was born Oct. 16, 1919, the daughter of Robert Collier, an author best known for his self-help book, “The Secret of the Ages.” She was one of six siblings and for life remained close to her iden-tical twin sister, Dorothea.

She grew up and attend-ed schools in New York and Sarasota, Fla., eventually attending college at Florida Southern.

At age 23, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and went to boot-camp and Officer Candidate School. She served four years, including as the commanding officer of a squadron in India responsible for the movement of troops and supplies.

She served as a leader in the military long before such a thing was even a thought for most women. Then she went onto accomplish much more in her life: she served as a secretary to high-rank-ing officials at Pan American Airways and became a first-hand witness to the Great Space Race to put American astronauts on the moon. She raised four children as a single mother and was an athlete into her 80s.

Her daughter, Pat Lamont, said her mother was an upbeat soul who would be hard pressed to say a negative thing about anyone or anything.

“She was always smiling, always happy all the time,” said her daughter.

He still doesn’t realize that being 100 is quite old. He still thinks he can do anything.”

And, until recently, that included driving a vehicle. He wasn’t able to get his driv-er’s license renewed after it expired on his 98th birthday. He even appealed after he couldn’t get a passing grade on the driving test, his daugh-ter said.

“He was very upset the state took away his driver’s license and even more upset that his daughter took the keys,” Kuhn said.

Over time, Lasell loosened up a little about the subject. With “Shirley” to tease and others to target for personal amusement, there isn’t much time to take life too seriously.

He said his secret to longev-ity is the breakfast he’s eaten every morning for as far back as he can remember.

He has a bowl of oatmeal with a specific number of rai-sins.

“Seventeen raisins in my oatmeal,” Lasell said.

Does it have to be 17?“Yes,” Lasell said.

“Seventeen.“I count them.”

The Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit won the Whidbey Island Naval Air Station Tenant Energy Efficiency Competition trophy after reducing its energy consumption by 52,600 kilowatt hours during the fourth quarter of 2015.

This represents a 10 percent

reduction over last year and is enough power to run five homes for an entire year.

Steam usage was cut by 1300 MBTU, a 13.6 percent reduction and water consumption by 7,000 gallons or 8 percent.

Although achievements like that involve the whole command, Aviation Electronics Technician 1st Class Joel Stevens and AT1 Susanna

Ennes spearheaded the effort. Noting an increase in energy

consumption during the spring and summer months, they called for an energy audit of the facility.

Working with their command’s Green Team leaders Aviation Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Leonardo Hurtado, AT1 James Blair and Aviation Boatswain’s Mate Fuel 2nd Class Elizar

Defiesta, they were able to reduce energy and water waste while recy-cling where possible.

Coordinating with the Public Works Energy Team, they found opportunities to match building heating and cooling needs and reduce loads during unoccupied hours.

As a result, for the year, util-ity costs for the Center for Naval

Aviation Technical Training Unit were reduced by $91,400.

Besides the inscribed trophy with their command’s name, the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit also wins $10,000 in facility improvements, a command party at the Convergence Zone or command movie at the Skywarrior Theater and the right to fly the Energy Flag.

Garage of Blessings collects them for new

Sea Cadet chapterBy DEBRA VAUGHN

Chief Scott Oram recently started a chapter of Sea Cadets in Oak Harbor, and the program is going well.

One snag — finding affordable Navy uniforms to outfit the kids involved.

Kristiina Miller, founder of The Garage of Blessings, has stepped up with a solution.

The Oak Harbor nonprofit is accepting used uniforms and donating them to the Sea Cadets.

“It saves me a ton of money,” Oram said.

The Naval Sea Cadet Corps was founded in 1958 by the Navy League and later char-tered by Congress.

The program introduces youth to skills and experiences of the sea-going services such as sailing and seamanship. The Oak Harbor chapter is focused more on naval aviation.

Much like NJROTC, the kids involved drill and wear uniforms. A full complement

can cost $150 new, Oram said.

The Garage of Blessings effort also cuts down on another problem with donated military uniforms -- having them appropri-ated by civilians.

It’s a security risk if someone imperson-ates a sailor. It’s also a matter of pride. It irks many in the service to see the uniform not cared for well.

“People don’t like seeing homeless people wandering in them around town,” he said.

For those reasons, The Garage of Blessings has never given uniforms out to the public. This arrangement allows the nonprofit to get uniforms into good hands.

Oram swings by every few weeks to pick up bags full of uniforms, physical training clothing, shoes, sea bags, belts, ties and the like. And Miller also throws in shoe polish.

“We throw that in there because we thought the young cadets should learn to polish their shoes at an early age,” she said.

Those who want to drop off uniforms for the Sea Cadets can bring them by The Garage of Blessings, 3159 Goldie Road Unit A, Oak Harbor.
