UNBC has the world class, multi-level Northern Sport Centre located right on campus. This four-season fitness, sport, and recreation facility is accessible all year round with an indoor track, basketball courts, and soccer fields. Why Occupational Health & Safety?The Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) professional certificate helps train Canada’s in-demand health and safety professionals for various industries, such as natural resources, oil and gas, chemical, as well as other environmental businesses throughout the public and private sector. Occupations in the health and safety sector are one of the 50 in-demand job categories listed by the Canadian government.

Health and Safety professionals:

• Inspect workplaces to ensure that equipment, materials and production processes do not present a safety or health hazard to employees or to the general public, such as fires and explosions.

• Investigate health and safety related complaints, spills of hazardous chemicals, outbreaks of diseases or poisoning and workplace accidents.

• Conduct surveys and monitoring programs of natural environment to identify sources of pollution.

• Provide consultation and deliver training programs to employers, employees and the general public on issues of public health, environmental protection or workplace safety.

How Much Does This Program Cost?The qualification assessments are CAD $100 and the application fee is CAD $150.00. The tuition for this entire program is CAD $23,450.00, which includes access to UNBC’s facilities (Eg. The Northern Sport Centre, free English tutoring, etc), quality reference books, classroom materials and supplies.

To secure a seat, students must pay a CAD $5,500.00 tuition deposit after registration. This deposit will be fully credited to your account at the beginning of the semester.

*UNBC reserves the right to adjust any fees without prior notice. Residence and Meal Plan costs are not included in tuition.

Why Get Your Certificate at UNBC?UNBC Continuing Studies has been training hundreds of Northern BC health and safety professionals since 2012. We are officially endorsed by ENFORM, one of Canada’s leading petroleum industry associations. Certificates endorsed by ENFORM certify your eligibility to work for companies in the petroleum, oil and gas industry.

Students in our OHS certificate program are taught by accredited instructors with years of industrial and teaching experience. Topics covered in this professional certificate are: Safety Inspections; Workplace Hazard Analysis; Risk Assessment & Control; Fire Safety Planning Systems; Emergency Preparedness; and Safety Program Design & Analysis.

The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Professional Certificate at UNBC is a 3 session (14 month) program with a combination of in-class instruction, real workplace visitation, and supervised practicum components.

1. Students will obtain a UNBC Continuing Studies Occupational Health and Safety Professional Certificate and will be prepared to work as OHS professionals in the workforce.

2. Students will have the potential to earn 12 UNBC credits if they apply for a UNBC undergraduate degree after completing this certificate, saving an international student up to one year of study, as well as up to CAD $8,000.00 in tuition fees towards a future degree program.

3. Graduates from this program will fulfill education requirement for Canada Registered Safety Professional designation, the national standard for practicing OHS professionals.

4. Students will gain fundamental knowledge and language skills to further pursue a Bachelor’s degree, such as Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies, or even General Business.

Who Can Apply?Students should have a minimum 72 IBT TOEFL score, or a minimum of IELTS 5.5 in all sections to meet the English requirement to enter into this program. A proficient student should have a minimum of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL score of 88 to enter into UNBC and the majority of Canadian Universities in a degree granting program.

If you do not have an English Language Test score, UNBC can conduct an entry exam for you in China. Students who pass this exam will become potential candidates for our program and will be given recommendations for the next steps.
