An overwhelming number of Ohio

residents have driver licenses which are

suspended or otherwise invalid due to

failure to meet reinstatement requirements.

Many are unaware of the reasons for

suspensions. The reinstatement process

is often complicated and involves the

Ulmer & Berne Continues Partnership with Legal AidLow income tenants throughout Cuyahoga County face housing problems.

Unfortunately, Legal Aid has not always had the financial or volunteer means to

handle private landlord-tenant disputes, especially those outside the jurisdiction

of the Cleveland Municipal Court. In 2010, Ulmer & Berne LLP created a game

changer with a $60,000 pledge over three years and volunteer commitment to Legal

Aid’s Private Landlord-Tenant project

Ulmer & Berne agreed to handle cases throughout the entire county. In the first

year of this partnership, volunteer attorneys have been able to assist people not

only in Cleveland, but in Cleveland Heights, Garfield Heights, Bedford, Shaker

Heights, Euclid and Lakewood - expanding Legal Aid’s presence throughout the

county and dramatically increasing the number of low-income clients represented.

In February, Ulmer & Berne attorneys attended a CLE to learn

the areas of housing law that would help them assist low-

income individuals facing difficult issues, such as being locked

out without their belongings, or facing eviction because they

complained about their living conditions. Lauren Gilbride,

staff attorney in the Volunteer Lawyers Program states, “Ulmer

& Berne attorneys do not handle landlord-tenant disputes

in their everyday practice. I am always impressed with the

volunteers’ commitment to learning and practicing a new

area of the law.”

Ulmer & Berne’s participation in the Private Landlord-Tenant

Project represents the continuation of a strong philanthropic

relationship between the firm and Legal Aid. In 2008, Ulmer

& Berne marked its 100th Anniversary with a $100,000 gift.

“We’ve always had a firm culture that supported pro bono work and Legal Aid,” says

Jennifer Adams, Ulmer & Berne attorney. “For me, the most positive side effect

of this project has been the number of new volunteers. The cases appeal to both

litigators and transactional attorneys.”

Michael N. Ungar, attorney at Ulmer & Berne and president of the Cleveland

Metropolitan Bar Association states, “Too many of our less fortunate Clevelanders

continue to have basic legal needs that remain unmet. Ulmer & Berne works close-

ly with Legal Aid because we, as attorneys, hold the key to helping them. Ulmer &

Berne’s participation in the Private Landlord-Tenant Project is a win-win; tenants

are provided with legal services they desperately need and our attorneys get hands-

on practice opportunities and are enthused about the partnership with Legal Aid.”

[ v l p ]{McDonald Hopkins Leverages Pro Bono Efforts to Initiate The Juvenile Court Pro Se ClinicIn July 2010 volunteer attorneys from McDonald Hopkins

inaugurated the Juvenile Court Pro Se Clinic. The Clinic

represents a partnership between The Legal Aid Society of

Cleveland, the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, and

McDonald Hopkins LLC, a firm that stepped up to lead a

project that addresses a large unmet legal need in the

community. Recently, Cuyahoga Child Support Enforcement

Agency (CSEA) has joined the partnership to add a critical

piece of service.

The Juvenile Court Pro Se Clinic, now scheduled on a

monthly basis, works to ensure access to the Court. McDonald

Hopkins attorney volunteers are on hand to provide needed

documents and advise so that individuals can recognize and

responsibly exercise their right to be heard.

McDonald Hopkins and its attorneys have been energized by this project.

“Within the Cleveland office, training for and participating in the Clinic has

brought together lawyers across practice areas and generations,” states Anne

Owings Ford, McDonald Hopkins attorney and catalyst for the

project. “In addition, lawyers who have seen the Clinic take

off to become a meaningful support for the people before the

Juvenile Court have begun making proposals for additional

pro bono legal programs.”

Forming the Clinic represents one facet of a firm-wide initia-

tive to broaden and formalize McDonald Hopkins’ commit-

ment to pro bono and public service. The firm is working

together across five offices nationwide to leverage volunteer

efforts in order to have the greatest impact possible.

“The Legal Aid Society of Cleveland is the very best partner a

firm could have for such an effort,” says Ms. Ford. “They not

only offer logistical support, with their vast experience of

setting up programs across our community, but also rock-solid

legal experience in numerous substantive areas of law.”

Ford envisions the Clinic becoming another cornerstone element of Legal Aid’s

assistance to the community. She looks forward to other lawyers across Legal

Aid’s service area joining in with McDonald Hopkins in the project.
