MUSICIANS IN THE SMUGTOWN STOMPERS. ( see small “italics” added to their “bios” by editor )

For At Least Two of Our Band Members, 2015 was a banner year !!

Dariusz Terefenko, piano. HOORAY !! Dariusz received “TENURE” at Eastman School of Music !! Smugtown Stompers first met

Dariusz in the late1990’s after he became interested in ragtime, and Prof. Tony Caramia suggested he play with Smugtown Stompers. Dariuszteaches at the Eastman School of Music, where he began his career as a master’s student of jazz piano. After completinghis M.M. in jazz piano performance (1998), he enrolled and finished a Ph.D. in music theory (2004) with a dissertation onKeith Jarrett’s Transformation of Standard Tunes. Terefenko holds a unique, joint teaching appointment in two depart-ments: Jazz and Contemporary Media and Music Theory. His research explores the interaction between classical andjazz improvisation. Terefenko’s piano solo album, Evidence, offers his creative take on favorite jazz standards, jazz instru-mentals, and own compositions. His latest duo project, Crossing Paths, features alto saxophonist Alexa Tarantino. Thealbum explores the potential of interactive improvisation using lesser-known standard tunes as well as 20th century posttonal compositions. In 2014, Terefenko published a book: Jazz Theory – From Basic to Advanced Study (Routledge),which has already been adopted as a required textbook at prestigious music universities in the USA, Canada, & Europe.

Mark Bernard, trumpet. Mark is employed full time at Monroe County Water Authority & operates his farm in Williamson, first for vegeta-

bles & more recently for wine-grapes using varieties pioneered by Dr. Konstantin Frank. In 2015, the Young-Sommer-Winery’s Bernard-Vineyard-

Select Dry Riesling in New-York-Wine-&-Grape Foundation’s competition won “Best Limited Production Wine” award. Born in Buffalo, Marksoon moved to Rochester, NY, where he began his trumpet studies as a young boy. Early influences and later luminariesare many, but the jazz styles of Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke continue to provide influence and inspiration. Markalso regularly researches the history of the Band's music.

Carol Mulligan, vocals. Carol’s traveling, springtime Garden Tour in London & surrounds, early fall Ireland Tour hosted by Dady Brothers

(two bus-loads of other folks !!). Carol has pictures of both tours on her cell phone; just ask. Carol sings folk, religious, Irish, pop, and nowtraditional jazz. In Pittsburgh she started singing in church, and in Rochester she first joined a folk-singing group at OurLady of Mercy church. The Stompers first knew her in Mulligan Stew, a group formed in 1975 and popular into the 1980s.She has a long-standing interest in Irish music starting with the trio Mulligan, Dolan, & Parnell and, since 1992, Carol hasprovided fine jazz vocals for many Stompers audiences.

Al Santillo, drums (& banjo). Al played banjo in both the Upstate String Band and the Stompers & is now thesparkplug of the Stompers’ rhythm section. Retired from Kodak &also from his own remodeling business, Al’s early musictraining came from his father, Al Sr., who played tenor banjo on the Keith Vaudeville circuit & in several regional bands.

Glenn Estey, clarinet & soprano saxophone. Glenn is originally from Salt Lake City, Utah (Brigham Youngis his great uncle) and has lived in Rochester for 13 years. He started playing clarinet at the age of 10, oboe at the age of11, saxophone at the age of 12 followed by studying clarinet with the principal clarinetist of the Utah Symphony for manyyears. He took up flute at the age of 40 something. Glenn plays all woodwind instruments (except bassoon) and studiedmusic with Dr. Roger Eckers for circa 5 years. He has played lead alto for the Rochester Metropolitan Orchestra and theGateswingers Big Band. He plays clarinet and soprano saxophone for the Smugtown Stompers.

Bud Taylor, tuba. Retired Kodak inventor and co-developer of 3-D digital-image printing service widely used to-day. Currently, an engineering consultant in patent searching and writing. After many years in marching bands, Budjoined the Stompers after hearing them at the Last Chance Saloon in downtown Rochester in 1963. He anchors the low-register with his 1912 tuba, combining early players styles with modern phrasing.

Dave Sturmer, trombone, leader. Dave & Jane’s travels: Warner-Brothers Studios trip in February to San Diego [accompanying

son Kevin, winner of national Big-Bang-Theory contest (with 25,000 entrants) to a taping of show]. Early fall Dady-Brothers’ 25th music-oriented Anni-

versary Tour, Ireland & Northern Ireland. Dave’s high-school/college venues included a local, bi-monthly television broadcast or-chestra, a big “Stan-Kenton” style band, & leading a Dixieland band. With Ph.D. in hand, Dave balanced a researchchemist’s career (Kodak) with occasional teaching (RIT) & trombone & music-transcription for the Stompers.

In Memoriam. Doug Sinclair, long-time clarinetist (& soprano saxophonist) for Smugtown Stompers, died October 10. 2015. Dougwas an enthusiastic musician who played nearly every Smugtown job for many decades. His profession was optical design, and as afaculty member of U of R's Institute of Optics and later at his own Sinclair Optics here in Rochester, his ray-tracing lens design softwarebecame "the world standard" among university and industrial users alike. Some of our band members also used Doug's program(Super Oslo), so band-rehearsal time was occasionally punctuated with "optics consulting" conversation. Doug's scientific stature wasthe best, and his company's support for local Rochester charities (eg, WXXI) was also significant.

MEMBER PROFILE. Richie Ryan For the past year or so, we have really enjoyed

the infusion of our Buffalo friends at our monthly dinner/concerts. One of the leaders of that

fine group of Dixieland enthusiasts from the Queen City is Richie Ryan. It was he and his

good friend Harold Thomas who brought their group here to join us a year ago.

Richie, who will be turning 80 in a matter of weeks, lives in Amherst, NY, a suburb of

Buffalo. He is a director of the Queen City Jass Society there, which has about 400

members. He is a native of Buffalo and a lifelong bachelor. He loves Dixieland and jazz,

and has taught dancing in Buffalo, to include tango, jitterbug, rumba, and more. You can

see him in action every month at our parties as he enthusiastically leads the parasol

procession through our venue, with his whistle ready to blow, his cane high in the air, and

the permanent smile on his face.

Richie had a varied working career, spending 29 years in the Personnel Department of Ford Motor Company

in Buffalo, and eight years in publicity and promotion for the Buffalo Bison International League baseball team.

He also spent four years in the Navy, stationed at the Naval Air Station in Niagara Falls. He is an avid Buffalo

sports fan, having had season tickets to the Bills, Sabres, and more. (Written by Ron Anderson)
