As a scientist…

Basic science and clinical research has generated & continue to generate important tools & knowledge about HIV to improve treatment, care and prevention.

I believe that applying scientific evidence and best practice at every level of the HIV response is the only way to tackle the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

It is unacceptable that the results of science are not implemented & made available for the benefit of all people

As a President of IAS and a Nobel laureate

I have a voice & the responsability for continouly advocating for the right to an evidence-based response to HIV (women & children, key affected populations…)

It is also my vision that we must reinforce dialog & cooperation with health professionals & decision makers fighting other diseases (including in research)

We must advocate for a better link between research & public health intervention

Remember that we are always stronger together!

As a Woman….women represent 49% of all adults living with HIV. HIV remains the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age worldwide.

Too little research that has been pursued to address specific questions related to HIV infection in women or to systematically investigate sex differences.

IAS has with 15 other partners launch in 2010 a consensus statement aiming at advancing an HIV research agenda for women and children. This document describes 20 priority research questions to address the knowledge gap in this area.

We will continue to Advocate for a gender based approach in HIV research

IAS has also introduced in 2011 a gender policy to abstract submission to conferences & the journal of IAS to encourage authors to provide research results disaggregated by sex and to provide gender analysis.
