When we hear the word ‘beauty’, we inevitably think that beauty belongs in a special elite realm where only the extraordinary dwells. Yet without realizing it, each day each one of us is visited by beauty. When you actually listen to people, it is surprising how often beauty is mentioned. A world without beauty would be unbearable.

Mary Melilli is a professor in the Media and Communication department at Salem State University teaching multimedia storytelling, portfolio seminar, and advertising writing. Previously, Mary was the chairperson of Art + Design (2014 – 2016). She was also a member of the Board of Directors of Salem Arts Association (2015 – 2017). Mary has taught at Endicott College, University of South Australia, Maine College of Art, University of Maine, Purdue University, and Kent State University. She has maintained a professional fine art practice ever since receiving a BA in Art in 1981 from Wellesely College. Her paintings and mixed media works have been exhibited locally in Boston, Beverly, Salem, Marblehead, Lowell, and Lawrence as well as overseas in Slovenia, Singapore, and Bali. Mary earned an MFA in Graphic Design in 1983 from Yale University and has since produced a range of projects including visual identity, publication, and informational graphics. Mary believes in developing innovative teaching methods and expanding programs to include both traditional and contemporary approaches to media and visual communication education.
