A Message From Pastor Ben

This week we are looking at the prayer that Jonah prayed while in the belly of the fish. And I think that we can learn a lot from this prayer that Jonah prayed. How often do we exhaust all other avenues and then, and only then say “Well I guess all we can do now is pray”? Interestingly I visited someone in hospital just a few weeks ago who was actually lamenting that so many people were praying for him while he was unwell.

His thoughts were – “Why are they only praying for me now”? Let’s incorporate prayer into every part of every day – waking up with prayer – praying through the day – and finishing with prayer before we go to sleep. I remember someone telling me that maybe the reason you can’t sleep is because you haven’t spent enough time yet in prayer today and this is God gently ‘reminding’ you to talk to Him. I know that prayer is an important part of the ministry and work of the church planting team at Springfield who we support, and we thank Pastor Matt for sharing his journey at our Ipswich Central location this week. Let’s spend this week accessing God’s power through prayer that the Holy Spirit can do even more than we can possibly imagine in us and through us as we seek to make Christ known across our city. Ben.

Home Communion and Visiting Have you felt God leading you towards visiting and even giving Holy Communion to those people across our Parish who are unable to attend church? We thank God for the people who have volunteered; however we are still in need of more people to either visit regularly (once a month or bi-monthly) or to just visit intermittently throughout the year. We are also in urgent need of people to be available to visit monthly and give Holy Communion. Please keep this important ministry in your prayers. If you are able to help please Contact Vicki Park: Parish House on 3202 403 or Email [email protected]

Sacrifical Giving Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privelage of sharing in this service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will. (2 Corinthians 8:2-5)

During his third missionary journey, Paul had collected money for the impoverished believers in Jerusalem. The churches in Macedonia – Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea – had given money even though they were poor, and they had given more than Paul expected. This was sacrificial giving – they were poor themselves, but they wanted to help. The point of giving is not so much the amount we give, but why and how we give. God does not want gifts given grudgingly. Instead, God wants us to give as these churches did – out of dedication to Christ, love for fellow believers, the joy of helping those in need, as well as the fact that it was simply the good and right thing to do. How well does your giving measure up to the standards set by the Macedonian churches? How is our giving going? Keep an eye on the graph below. God provides for the ministry of Ipswich Lutheran Church through your tithes and offerings, so please consider how you can give to continue to help people to know Christ and make Christ known.
