Cheers filled the air during a basketball game between the New England Blazers wheelchair basketball team and the Quincy Dragons, held at the Josiah Quincy Elementary School gym on Jan. 18. The school’s fourth annual wheelchair basketball game included the Carter School, a specialized grades-six-to-12 school for students with cognitive delay, physical handicaps and complex medical conditions.
“This is a good way to show our students how to be problem solvers,” said Principal Cynthia Soo Hoo. “They have no boundaries.”
Physical education teacher Tom Levett organized the first game in 2016, as the Quincy school has a number of physically handicapped students. It is a wheelchair-accessible public school in Boston’s Chinatown. The school serves more than 800 students from preschool to fifth grade.
Students banged drums in the bleachers and chanted “Go teachers!” The Quincy Dragons, composed of teachers, paraprofessionals and staff members, took to the court in wheelchairs. Carter School Principal Mark O’Connor and Principal
Soo Hoo also participated in the game.The New England Blazers team was
organized in 1992 as a way of giving physically disabled individuals a chance to engage in athletic activities. They are an affiliate of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, an organization whose members compete in the Paralympic Games and the World Championships.

Advocating for the reduction of traffic injuries and deaths across the state, the Massachusetts Vision Zero Coalition held a day of action at the Statehouse on Jan. 23. As the 2019 legislative session starts, the coalition
raised awareness for three traffic safety bills: Hands-free driving, automated traffic enforcement and traffic fatality reduction.
Hunter Levitan lost her sister in 2013, after a distracted driver using a cell phone hit her. “I can talk about real loss, devastating loss, preventable loss,” Levitan said.
In 2016, 37,461 people were killed in car crashes nationwide, a 6 percent increase in deaths compared with 2015 and the highest number of traffic deaths since 2007, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On Massachusetts roads, more than 315 people died in 2018, based on Massachusetts Highway Safety Division data.
“It feels to me that the time has come,” said Gov. Charlie Baker. He
recalled it was once clear no one should hold a mobile phone while driving.
Advocates worked to improve a law implemented in 2010, urging all use of mobile devices while driving to be hands-free. After victims and advocates shared stories, they visited state senators and representatives to discuss traffic safety legislation.
According to the NHTSA, roughly 481,000 drivers use their cell phone when driving every day, and teenagers are the largest age group of drivers in the fatal crashes, said Mackenzie Raimond of Students Against Destructive Decisions.
There have been too many excuses for drivers, while people are dying, said State Sen. Mark Montigny.

Author finds parallels in 1949 Chinese exodus to current refugee crisis

Helen Zia grew up hearing stories of her mother and aunt leaving Shanghai on the last boat. She had an inkling of how dire their circumstances were, but did not understand until later.
“As an American-born Chinese, that didn’t mean much to me, it didn’t convey the panic,” Zia said. “When I heard my mother’s own story, it inspired me to know more about the nightmare she was living.”
Zia details the story of four young people coming of age in “Last Boat Out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese who Fled Mao’s Revolution,” which came out Jan. 22. She spoke to a hundred exiles about their journey, crafting a narrative from the perspectives of Benny, Annuo, Ho and Bing. The four recount growing up in the midst of war: first against the Japanese, and then between the Nationalists and Communists. They were among millions who fled in 1949.
“There isn’t a single book or
dissertation in English about this exodus, which had a tremendous impact,” Zia said. “The (Shanghainese) really brought the intellectual and social capital, even if they were completely broke.”
When Mao Zedong emerged victorious in 1949, the citizens of cosmopolitan Shanghai feared retribution. Hong Kong’s population doubled in 1949, swelled by more than a million refugees. In Taiwan, about 1.3 million to 2 million Chinese “mainlanders” joined the 9 million people already living there. Hundreds more went to Southeast Asia and still fewer were able to emigrate to the United States and Britain.
“The four of them reflected what their generation of Shanghainese had gone through and what that shows about the millions of refugees and migrants globally,” Zia said.
Zia brings the world of Benny, Ho, Annuo and Bing to life. Each character is wonderfully complex and distinct, recounting their perspective a chapter at a time. Zia spent 12 years researching for her book, which included six months in Shanghai.
Her work has a clear message. “The opportunity we have today to stop repeating history and inflicting inhumanity on people, who are just trying to have their children survive childhood,” Zia said.
Zia lived in Boston in the 1970s, studying medicine at Tufts Medical School. After two years of studies, she became an activist, organizing for labor rights, Boston school integration and women’s rights.
“My passion was the community,” Zia said. “I got very involved in the South End and the Castle Square community.”
Today, Zia lives in the Bay Area with her wife Lia Shigemura.
“I see myself as a feminist and someone who stands up for civil rights for Asian Americans, and also all people,” Zia said. “My writing is a part of my activism, so this book reflects my belief in stories that bring out the full humanity of each person.”
Zia will be in Boston on Feb. 12.

The Chinatown/South Cove Neighborhood Council met Jan. 22 at the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association.
A mixed-income housing project was proposed for 41 LaGrange Street, purchased by St. Francis House and the Planning Office of Urban Affairs (POUA) as part of 48 Boylston Street. The first phase of 48 Boylston is complete, with 46 affordable units to be occupied in two weeks, said Karen LaFrazia, president and CEO of St. Francis House.
The second phase of the project is a 19-story building with 126 units of affordable and market-rate housing at 41 LaGrange Street, said POUA president Lisa Alberghini.
“We’re trying to maximize affordability,” Alberghini said. “There has been gentrification in this community with thousands of luxury units going up. Many are displaced and come to the St. Francis House. We’re all here to protect and serve our neighbors.”
The public comment period for the project ends Feb. 14. Community
members can submit comments online, write letters of support to the Boston Planning and Development Agency, or attend the Chinatown Resident Association meeting on Feb. 6.
Hotel Moxy Boston will update its security plan, said project manager Mark Rosenshein. The 24-story microhotel with 340 rooms originally had no security personnel on the ground floor, which is an elevator lobby leading to the second floor reception area. After hearing concerns from police about safety, there will be personnel at the sidewalk for security or valet parking for most of the day, apart from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. During that time, the hotel door will be locked, with card access for hotel guests. Moxy Boston is scheduled to open June.
Boston Police Department District A-1 Sgt. Steve Moy said, “We want a physical body there most of the time. Capt. Ken Fong and I are satisfied with the security arrangement.”
The next CNC meeting is rescheduled to Feb. 19, due to Presidents’ Day.
Chinatown Neighborhood Council reviews housing proposal, hotel safety

fatalities and the pain of loss from happening. The advocacy day was organized by the Massachusetts Vision Zero Coalition, Safe Roads Alliance, LivableStreets Alliance, the Massachusetts Bicycle Coalition, WalkBoston, the Boston Cyclists Union and TextLess Live More.

Acclaimed novelist Ha Jin presented his newest book “The Banished Immortal: A Life of Li Bai” at Newtonville Books on Jan. 10. Published by Pantheon, the book is Jin’s nonfiction debut and the first full-length English biography of Tang dynasty poet Li Bai..
Apart from filling up the academic blank in the English market, Jin said such attempt was also for the sake of his family.
“At that time, my wife was very sick. I was the only caregiver of the family. In other words, I couldn’t write a novel,” said Jin. “When you write a novel, you have to inhabit a book. You live with the characters for some time. Only nonfiction would be feasible back then. ”
After having written fiction for nearly 30 years, Jin expected the nonfiction work to be narratively driven and deeply human for audience.
During his research, Jin discovered the scholarship of Li Bai was rife with imagination and myth, and the texts are not dramatically well constructed.
For example, Chinese author An Qi’s “A Life of Li Bai” reads knowledgeably,
but more than half of her biography consists of dialogue, lacking direct historic accounts.
“You have to be very thoughtful when it comes to nonfiction,” said Jin. “Unless you have sources like letters and diaries, you can’t do too much with the figure’s thoughts. Serious readers will question how did you know.”
The existing biographies and historic records of Li Bai are mostly based on his poetry. Jin stayed with Li’s poems for more than two years. Using them as milestones in the narration, every poem Jin selected and translated himself represents a small moment of crisis or climax in the poet’s life. Jin also endeavored to portray the poetic culture in the Tang dynasty, giving richer texture and context into the story.
“Li Bai’s major events and the chronology of his poems are out there. I couldn’t invent too much,” Jin said. “The most important part in the process of writing is to seize the moment, making it seem more relevant and revealing. At the same time, it doesn’t interfere and interrupt with the flow of the narration.”
Jin designed an unexpected ending for the biography as well. Rather than a divine historic figure, he attempted to treat the master poet as a human being. Eventually, he takes Li back to his family with his children and even grandchildren.
“The ending is very important. I imagined the ending that nobody ever had written that way,” Jin said. “All the energy and narrative force will move toward that ending. Ending creates the motion and momentum. It gives sense of purpose of the story. That’s how I envisioned the book would become.”
The Next Steps Transitional English Program (Next STEP) alumni gathered on Jan. 16 at the Asian American Civic Association (AACA).
AACA has 10 levels of English for speakers of other languages, teaching adults basic to high intermediate skills.
Classes are designed to help students to adjust to life in the United States and prepare them to continue to study English at a higher level. Learners go to college, join a job training program or secure employment.

In his great American novel “Ragtime,” EL Doctorow’s reimagined New York City at the turn of the 20th century is populated with fictional characters and celebrity figures. The main characters come from three groups: white Anglo-Saxon Protestants in the affluent suburb New Rochelle, blacks in Harlem and immigrants from Eastern Europe on the Lower East Side. Through a series of encounters, the three groups become intertwined. The fictional families challenge perspectives with real-life champions of change, Emma Goldman and Booker T. Washington.
Piano player Coalhouse and Jewish peddler Tateh add authentic and powerful voices for the experiences of African-Americans and immigrants. Yet the colorful tapestry of “Ragtime’s” America does not include indigenous peoples or Asian immigrants. None of the historical figures — Harry Houdini, Henry Ford,
Evelyn Nesbit, JP Morgan — are Asian Americans.
In its staging of “Ragtime” at Wheelock Family Theatre at Boston University, Asian Americans are visible. The talented cast includes actors of Asian heritage: Lisa Yuen in the pivotal role of the wealthy white matriarch, child actor Ben Choi-Harris as her son, Lily Park in the ensemble and Jenna Lea Scott as Brigit.
Yuen expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play the role. “Like Mother, we have to hope that we make the right decisions in these moments and that our choices make a positive impact in the present and future.”
A fifth-generation Chinese American, Yuen’s family immigration experience will be on display in the theater lobby.

The Boston Tax Help Coalition, a public-private partnership of the Mayor’s Office of Financial Empowerment, provides free tax preparation and comprehensive asset building services to low and moderate-income residents in Boston.
The earned income tax credit (EITC) is cited as the most expansive and effective anti-poverty program. Since its founding in 2001, the Coalition has served more than 150,000 households with free tax preparation and returned over $215
million dollars in tax credits and refunds directly into residents’ pockets and on the pathway to financial empowerment.
The Ambassador program was created in 2005 to address the significant number of eligible immigrants who were not utilizing the full potential of the EITC. Our Chinese Ambassador will help the community at JVS in Downtown Crossing and at BCNC in Chinatown.

The Year of Pig is coming around when the memorable moments are recalled and the positive changes are expected for a peaceful and prosperous new year. Smoking is no longer a new topic to everyone but stop smoking is definitely a new wish to many people.
“Let’s make such a good wish come true for you and your loved ones with Asian Smokers’ Quitline (ASQ),” said Cherrie Ng, a project manager of ASQ. “ASQ aims at providing professional yet friendly help to smokers on their quitting journey toward the Year of the Pig. ASQ friendly tobacco cessation counselors are happy to share with smokers about what,
when, and how to do to quit with less pressure and more ease.”
According to “The Effects of a Multilingual Telephone Quitline for Asian Smokers: A Randomized Controlled Trial” research, the result shows that telephone counseling approximately doubles the quit rate compared with self-help materials. ASQ has been proven to help double smokers’ chances of quitting. It offers one-on-one telephone counseling that’s completely confidential and customized quit plan based on smokers’ situation.
Smokers are easily be enrolled in ASQ tobacco cessation program within five to seven minutes. Making a call to ASQ Chinese Quitline (1-800-838-8917) or visiting ASQ website at www.asq-chinese.org, smokers are connected to free tobacco cessation counseling service in Chinese. Besides providing service in Cantonese and Mandarin, ASQ also offers other service lines to help smokers who speak Korean or Vietnamese to quit smoking.

The winter months can be long and cold. However, exciting winter sports, such as skiing, snowboarding and ice skating, make freezing weather more bearable and fun. Follow these eight tricks to stay warm and safe on the mountains.
1. Check the weather forecast in detail. It is always good to not only know
the temperature but also the weather conditions of the area, especially for skiing and snowboarding. If you are going to a large ski resort, there might be a comprehensive weather report for you to check the wind, precipitation and the highest temperature of the day. Gusty wind means you’ll need to layer up and cover every inch of exposed skin. Precipitation and high temperature could both mean icy or slushy snow, which require caution.
2. Layer up. Wear three layers: one warm
base layer, one middle layer, and one windproof outer jacket. Don’t dress too warm, as you would soon be overwhelmed with heat after activity on the slope. The layering method also applies to your feet and hands. Wear thin silk sock liners underneath wool socks and liner gloves under mittens. I recommend wearing mittens instead of gloves, because I can keep my fingers snug together to trap warmth.
3. Use wool material. Sweat is the biggest enemy when
enjoying sports outdoors. Use wool clothes, socks and liners, which dry
faster and contain heat.
4. Protect yourself with proper gear. Wear helmets and goggles if you’re
a skier. For snowboarders, protect your wrists and elbows with wrist guards and elbow pads.
5. Have a big breakfast and drink plenty of water.
You will need enough calories and fluids to keep your body warm when you’re doing winter workouts. It is also optional to carry a small backpack with a water bottle.
6. Warm up before you head to the slopes.
Start with some light exercises or stretches, then slowly transition to the main activity. By waking up your muscles and ligaments, it decreases the possibility of injuring yourself.
7. Take a class. If you’re new to winter sports, you
should take a lesson. The experienced instructors can walk you through the maneuvers and how-tos on the slope.
8. You’re responsible for people in front of you, not behind you.
Many new skiers ask me how to watch out for the people from behind. The answer is that, in ski etiquette, you’re only responsible for the people ahead of you. Therefore, you can observe their style and predict their routes to avoid crashing.

With community partners, the AHI has addressed various health priorities over the years, including chronic disease, mental health, family violence and promotion of healthy lifestyles. Community partners are presently focused on the harmful effects of smoking, including smoking cessation, prevention and education.

Located in the bustling Financial District in Boston, Kamakura opened its door in November last year. Named after owner and executive chef Youji Iwakura’s hometown in Japan, the restaurant offers authentic Japanese dishes with a seasonal focus.
Kaiseki ryori, a traditional Japanese dinner consisting of seasonal items, is served in a curated sequence of amuse-bouche, raw fish, simmered dish, grilled dish, soup, rice and dessert.
For sakizuke, a term similar to the French word amuse-bouche, the chef offered us bigeye tuna tartare with Japanese yam and trout roe.
Then there comes Hassun, the second course. Traditionally, the purpose of Hassun is for the chef to set the seasonal theme. Ours came with a seasoned black cod sashimi, sautéed mushroom medley
and miso soup. Next is the Takiawase, a simmered
dish that includes Shinjo fish cake and shishito pepper in shoyu dashi. Shishito is a sweet pepper from East Asia. Both the shishito and the delicious fish cake released natural sweetness, accentuating the lightly seasoned soy sauce broth.
The next course was unagi chawanmushi. It was simple but delicate. Chawanmushi is a traditional dish that has egg custard steamed in dashi broth. The addition of grilled eel (unagi) reflected the tenderness of the steamed egg, without overpowering the mild custard.
We were served ahi tuna sashimi and fig tempura. The freshness of the ahi tuna made me feel like I just took a dive in the ocean. Sourced from Hawaii, the fish has a slight citrus undertone.
The grilled dish, Robata, is a Texas wagyu striploin prepared with daikon and dashi butter. It was tender and juicy, thanks to the chef’s preparation.
Then came the yaki onigiri, a crispy rice ball half soaked in wasabi dashi with salmon caviar on top. Its flavoring was light but I tasted a hint of spiciness from the dashi, hence the wasabi. The crunchiness of the rice ball indicated exacting execution for timing, as crispy rice gets soggy after sitting in soup for too long.
The dessert was wagashi, a traditional Japanese confection. It is known for delicate presentation and labor-intensive making process. Wagashi is common at the end of a kaiseki ryori. It is also customary to serve it with matcha.
Aside from Kaiseki menu, Kamakura offers an Omakase menu, as well as
traditional Japanese food, and bento lunchbox. It is also the first restaurant in Boston to offer Japanese wine and an extensive sake list. Chef Iwakura previously worked at renowned Boston restaurant Uni, where the tiny sashimi bar gained recognition for the most innovative Japanese cuisine in the city under his leadership.
This was an arranged tasting, so Sampan’s experiences may be more pleasant than the norm.

Yuen說：「從歷史的角度來講，我最關注的是猶太移民的故事，我的家人在19世紀50年代移民到美國，當時正是加州淘金熱時期。而尤其是早期的幾代人，由於與旁人不盡相同的相貌，即便出生在美國，卻始終被視為外來人。」
《拉格泰姆》將於1月25日至2月17日在波士頓大學的Wheelock家庭劇院上演。

是一種傳統菜餚，是在出汁中加入蛋羹蒸至熟。烤鰻魚的加入與蛋羹的嫩度產生共鳴，但它並沒有超過蛋味。每種成分的調味劑保持在最低限度。
然後我們吃了金槍魚魚生和無花果天婦羅。金槍魚的新鮮感讓我覺得我剛潛水從海裡回來。主廚精心調製來自夏威夷的魚生，讓食客在品嚐到魚味的同時體會到一點點柑橘的酸。
烤盤是用白蘿蔔和出汁油製作的德州和牛西冷牛扒。在主廚的準備下，它非常嫩和多汁。

謝漢蘭從小聽著母親和阿姨講她們當年乘最後一艘船離開上海的故事長大，這些敘述讓她對當時的緊迫局面略知一二，而直到後來，她才明白那些故事意味著什麼。
謝漢蘭說：「我雖為華人，但出生在美國，無從切身體會當時的狀況。聽了我母親對那段時光的回憶之後，我才想要了解更多她所經歷的驚惶過往。」
謝漢蘭詳細轉述了本月22號上市的名為《離開上海的最後一艘
船：華人逃離毛澤東統治的史詩故事》。她與上百名當年的逃離者交談，了解他們的經歷，最後以Benny、Annuo、Ho和Bing四人的視角講述了這段過往，而這四段故事中戰火不斷：首先是二戰的中日戰爭，而後是華人內部黨派鬥爭。像他們一樣在1949年逃離中國的人數達上百萬。
謝漢蘭表示：「關於影響力如此巨大的集體遷移的英文刊物，書本非常少見。即便落魄得身無分文，上海人還是用自己的智慧及社會資本惠及四方。」
當毛澤東於1949年完成革命時，上海都會市民很擔心會被報復，這一年香港的人口翻了一番，上百萬難民魚貫而入；約130至200萬華人遷移至當時人口僅900萬的台灣。上百人移民東南亞，還有一些人設法來到了美國和英國。
謝漢蘭說：「故事中四個人的經歷是當時那一代生活動盪，全球遷徙的上海人的縮影。」
謝漢蘭將Benny、Ho、Annuo和Bing四個人描述得栩栩如生，每一個角色的性格都飽滿而迥然不同，故事每章變更視角。她歷時12年為寫成該書進行考察研究，其中的六個月在上海。
謝漢蘭的作品傳遞了明確的信息。「今天我們是可以避免重蹈覆轍，殘忍傷害那些甚至只是想讓自己的孩子安度童年的普通人，像難民。」

又漫長又寒冷的冬日裡，令人激動人心的戶外運動例如單板和雙板滑雪可以使嚴寒看起來短了一些。一下八點小貼士可以使冬日戶外運動更加安全和保暖。
1.看天氣預報需要注意細節。你不僅僅需要知道氣溫多少
度，更要知道天氣狀況比如風力或者降雨雪情況。如果你去比較大的滑雪場，一般就有提供比較全面的天氣情況，比如風力強度，降雨雪量以及氣溫最高最低值。如果風大，就說明你需要全副武裝，包括臉上的肌膚都要包住。如果有降雨或雪，或是氣溫較高的話，說明雪道會有大面積冰面，或者是雪的質感變沙冰而變重，為初學者帶來阻礙。這些情況都需要小心。
2.疊穿。穿三層：一層保暖的基層，一
層中間層和一層防風外層。不要穿得太暖和，因為在斜坡上活動後很快就會熱起來。分層方法也適用於你的腳和手。在連指手套下穿薄薄的小手套襯裡和羊毛襪下面的薄絲襪襯裡。我建議戴連指手套而不是分指手套，因為我可以保持手指緊貼在一起，以保暖。
3.使用羊毛材料。汗水是戶外運動時最大的敵
人。使用羊毛衣服，襪子和襯裡，乾燥更快，並含有熱量。

1月22日，華埠南灣社區議會在紐英倫中華公所召開會議。
會議提出了一個面向混合收入人群的住房計劃。該計劃位於羅君治街41號，由聖法蘭西遊民所及城市事務規劃辦公室並購，是寶來斯頓街48號的一部分。聖法蘭西遊民所的總裁兼首席執行官Karen LaFrazia表示，寶來斯
頓街48號的一期工程已完工，包括46套經濟適用房。
據城市事務規劃辦公室總裁Lisa Alberghini介紹，該項目的二期工程，為羅君治街41號一棟19層的大樓，包含126套符合市場價格的經濟適用房。

1月10日晚，哈金在牛頓書店向讀者介紹他的新書《謫仙-李白傳》。這是哈金的第一部非虛構類作品，也是關於李白的第一本英文長篇傳記。
哈金表示，除了想填補英文市場並無李白長篇傳記的空缺以外，這一次嘗試非虛構類作品，也有家庭原因。
「那時，我妻子病得很厲害。我得負擔我們一家人的生計。寫小說是不可能的，」哈金說，「寫小說，意味著你要棲居在小說裏。和你筆下的角色，一起生活上一段時間。只有寫非虛構類作品，對我來說才是可行的。」
不過，盡管《謫仙-李白傳》並非虛構作品，寫了將近三十年小說的哈金，仍然想為讀者們敘述一個精彩的故事。
縱觀前人寫的李白傳，哈金發現，這些中文傳記在敘事上，都存
在著一定程度的缺陷或局限。「寫非虛構類作品時，應當非
常小心，」哈金坦言，「除非是原作者在他的信件或日記中提到過，否則，就不應該描寫他心裏的想法。細心的讀者會質疑，你又是怎麽知道的呢。」
目前，李白傳記作品中的史料，大多出自其本人的詩文。為了寫好這個故事，哈金對李詩進行了逾兩年的研究。哈金在書中選用並親自翻譯的每一首詩，都是作品敘述的基石，刻畫了李白生命中經歷危機或高潮的那一刻。在這個基礎上，哈金還著意描述了在唐代有著悠久歷史傳統的詩文化與精英文化，為故事提供豐富肌理與背景。
「李白的人生大事件和詩歌都放在那裏，我不能無中生有，」哈金表示，「在寫作過程中，最重要的是抓住這一個個片段，把它們寫得更深刻、更富有感受性。而這種內涵，還不會影響和幹擾敘事本身的流暢。」
哈金為傳記還設置了一個與眾不同的結尾。他嘗試把李白塑造成一個富有感情色彩的個體，而不僅僅只是以神化的歷史人物來對待。結尾時，哈金把李白帶回了他的家庭，他的子女甚至是孫子都出現。
「結尾很重要，」哈金說，「所有的能量和敘事力都指向結尾。結尾給作品創造勢能和動力，也表明了作品的目的。書到底是怎樣一本書，在於它如何收尾。我想像的結尾，是任何人都不曾寫過的。」

為推進有效立法措施、減少麻州道路交通傷亡，麻州願景零聯盟於1月23日在州議會大廈舉辦了行動日活動。2019年立法會議伊始，該聯盟著力於喚起更多對交通安全法案的關注：雙手駕車、自動化交通執法以及降低交通死亡率。
Hunter Levitan因2013年的一場由於司機駕車時走神使用手機而導致的車禍失去了自己的姐妹。Levitan說：「我到這裡來將心中最真切、最透徹的痛苦講給各位，是因為這份痛苦其實是可以避免的。」
據國家公路交通安全管理局（NHTSA）統計，2016年，全國有37 , 4 6 1人死於車輛事故，這比2015年的數據高出了六個百分點，是自2007年以來的最高數據。而麻省公路安全部門根據給出的數據，在2018年的麻州，逾315人死於同樣的原因。
州長查理貝克表示：「終於是時候了。」他提到起初每個人都知道開車的時候不能使用手機，然而人們逐漸放鬆了警惕。終於，在立法人員的辛勤工作和聯盟組織及選民的支持下，相關立法將很快迎來進展。
積極人士正致力於改善於2010年推行的有關法案，呼籲人們雙手駕車，駕駛期間不拿起手機。在受害者和積極人士分享經歷之後，在場的人紛紛前去與自己區域的議員溝通，討論交通安全立法事宜。
来自《學生反對破壞性決策》組織的Mackenzie Raimond說道，根據NHTSA的數據，逾48萬司機每天駕車時都會使用手機，而少年群體在所有年齡階段人士遭遇嚴重車輛事故的情況中佔比最多。

紐英倫開拓者專業輪椅籃球隊1月18日在昆士小學跟昆士龍隊裏的老師們對打。第四届球賽包括卡特學校，一間為六年級至12年級有智能、體能及特殊病孩子的學校。
昆士小學校長司徒玉英說：「這個比賽是個好方法教孩子他們能解決問題。你什麼都可以做到的。」
昆士小學的體育老師 T o m Levett在2016年舉辦第一届籃球比賽，因當時見到身體殘疾的學生。據瞭解，昆士小學是波士頓公立學校中為數不多的無障礙學校。這間位於華埠的學校有超過800名學生，從學前班到五年級。
