From dreary to cheery, farmers’ markets have changed the way we look at grocery shopping. Just one trip to a local open-air market and you will want to bid farewell to those squeaky grocery carts forever. Talk about one-stop shopping! Patrons are not only treated to the freshest foods around, the markets also present the perfect opportunity to reconnect with neighbors, listen to local musicians, and support local farms and businesses. Peruse the local produce, bask in the glory of the baked goods, take a peek at the pre-made entrees, and browse the fresh flowers and potted plants. Thanks to weekly markets held in Collingswood, Haddonfield, and Haddon Township, local residents never have to wait long – or travel far – to get a farmers’ market fix!

What’s your Take?Shop at a local farmers’ market and you’re
guaranteed fresh food and a good time! What is the first thing you look for
when visiting a farmers’ market?
• Haddonfield Child Care’s DEVIN SELLERS puts fresh basil
and tomatoes at the top of his shopping list when visiting a
farmers market. “They’re great with pasta and mozzarella cheese.”
• CORINNE ETIENNE heads for “the seasonal fruit and organic baked goods.” Corinne is pictured with one of Haddonfield’s newest residents, her six-week-old daughter BROOKE.
• Haddon Township newcomer TOM SHEMELEY would love to visit the Westmont Farmers’ Market, but his work schedule often gets in the way (Tom is Cherry Hill’s Fire Marshal). If he was given the chance to visit the Westmont’s mid-week market, Tom would seek “local Jersey produce ... it’s so much better than what you find at the grocery store.”
• Friends School’s KAREN PAOLI and PAT SACCHETTI never pass up a chance to visit a farmers’ market.
Karen answered, “I look for herbs,
wild flowers, white peaches, and
breads.” Pat, a long-time Haddon
Township resident, looks for tomatoes
for her famous tomato caserole.
“Hey ... anyone who takes a tour of the
school can have the recipe!” Pat laughed.
• Keeping kids busy at Haddonfield Friends’ Summer Camp is a family affair! Sisters DANIELLE CATON and SANDY MAHONEY are celebrating 10 years of working with campers. Teacher Danielle visits farmers’ markets in search of “Jersey tomatoes and strawberries.”
Teacher Sandy explained, “I love Jersey corn, so I always look for it first.”
• Farmers’ markets make Intrigue Photography’s STEVE
MAGNOTTA a bit nostalgic. “When I lived on the Main Line,
I would often go to an Amish farmers’ market where they
sold THE BEST pigs in blankets. Now whenever I go to a
farmers’ market, I look for them,” Steve revealed.

get an eyeful at the ritz If you didn’t catch The Full Monty at the Ritz last year – or if you just want to relive a fond memory – then you owe it to yourself to visit the theatre at the end of August. The Full Monty is making a special four-show comeback! The ritz will have you riveted The Ritz Theatre is gearing up to present Reginald Rose’s Twelve Angry Men in September and October. Set in the 1950’s, Twelve Angry Men is an examination of a group of jurors brought together to deliberate an open-and-shut case. Entrusted with the power to send a teenager to the electric chair for killing his father, the jurors are confined to a small jury room until they reach a unanimous decision. The play examines the men’s personalities, prejudices, biases, indifference, anger, judgments, cultural differences, ignorance, and fears. These traits hamper the jurors’ decision-making abilities, causing them to ignore the case’s real issues. A preview performance will take place on Thu sep 9 at 7:30pm. Opening Night is fri sep 10; the show will start at 8pm. Friday and Saturday night performances (8pm) will take place sat sep 11 thru sat oct 9. Matinees (2pm) will be held each Sunday from sep 12 thru oct 3. Wednesday evening shows (7:30pm) will take place on sep 22 and oct 6. Tickets range in price from $20 to $30. For tickets, call the Box Office at 858-5230 or order online at ritztheatreco.org.

Join the fight It’s round seven in Charlie Clarke’s fight against Cystic Fibrosis (CF)! The seventh annual Charlie’s Fight Night will be held on sat sep 11 from 7pm to 12m at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The Charlie’s Fight Committee cordially invites you to join them for the exciting evening. Charlie Clarke is an eighth grader at the Middle School. In most ways Charlie is just like his peers. However, since being diagnosed with CF about five years ago Charlie has had to adhere to strict treatment protocols in order to maintain his health. Charlie’s commitment to staying healthy has allowed him to succeed in both school and sports (soccer, basketball, flag football, and baseball). Charlie and his parents, Lisa and Jim, began Charlie’s Fight shortly after Charlie was diagnosed. Since that time, the Charlie’s Fight Committee has raised over a million dollars to fight CF. Committee members hope to raise the funds needed to develop new medications that will enable Charlie, and others like him, to live happily and comfortably until a cure for CF is found. Over the years, Charlie’s Fight Night has evolved into one of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest fundraising events in the Delaware Valley region. This year’s extravaganza is not to be missed. The evening will include cocktails, a silent auction, dinner, dancing, and entertainment. Some of Philadelphia’s most notable sports celebrities will be in attendance. If you would like to be a sponsor, donate an auction item, or purchase tickets, call the Delaware Valley Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at 610-325-6001. All proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. To learn more about CF, and be inspired by Charlie Clarke, go to charlieclarke.com.
