THE sea will turn silver soon, teeming with sardines making their annual pilgrimage up the coast.

The “sardine run” takes place any time from May onwards, and local skipper John Barry, of Southern Cross harbour and river cruises, reckons this season could be a bumper year.

The sardine run is always accompanied by predators search-ing for their share of the shoals, from dolphins, whales and sharks to gannets, cormorants and other birds.

The “greatest shoal on earth” is a spectacle that must be seen to be believed; at its peak the sea is transformed into a mael-strom of froth and metallic flashes as predators round up their prey and get stuck in. In some cases, sharks and dolphins work together to force the sardines into a “bait ball”, bringing the fish up to the surface of the water before attacking and having their full.

Then there are the human spectators – both onshore and offshore – as well as those anglers seeking a share of the fishy fare. Sardines, also known as pilchards, make a good meal, can be sold on or used as bait, and are desirable for this versatil-ity. In parts of the sardine run the shoal comes so close to the shore fish can literally be scooped up by hand or by bucket.

Sardines rarely last beyond a three year lifespan and tend to grow up to around 20 centimetres. According to the Natal Shark’s Board website, the fish make up for their lack of longev-ity by reaching sexual maturity early and spawning abundant-ly. The sardine run itself is the phenomenon where huge shoals of the cold water fish are pushed close to the surface in broad swathes along the coast, generally from May to August each year. The upwelling of the current moves the fish into shallow water, making them easy pickings all the way as they move up the coast from the Western Cape and reach the upper South Coast of Natal.

It would be amiss to live in East London or elsewhere on our coast and not take a boat out to see the action first hand. Those brave enough to venture into the water can even take a snorkel and swim among the sardines. Apparently the sharks are too busy scoffing sardines to be bothered with voyeuristic humans but, please note, this activity is entirely at your own risk!

Otherwise, a rubberduck trip out the harbour and beyond the breakwaters is a fantastic idea. The sardines guarantee the pres-ence of dolphins en masse, and most likely a whale spotting as well.

• Chat to fishermen or check sites such as the Natal Sharks Board (www.shark.co.za) or commercial site www.sardinerunafrica.com to monitor the progress of the sardines, generally from the middle of May onwards.

• Southern Cross Harbour and River Cruises offer an affordable way to get out into the heart of the sardine run as it happens on our doorstep. Chat to owner and skipper John Barry about the three options he offers for optimum sardine run watching: the speedy rubberduck, a more leisurely mono (single hull) boat, and a Catamaran that can be moored offshore. Barry is based at Latimer’s Landing and can be reached on 082-938-6275.

www.chintsakitchen.co.zaOpen every Wednesday night and Sunday

lunch until 31 August. Get your last fix at Chintsa Kitchen!

043 738 5226

It is with great sadness we advise that Chintsa Kitchen's lease at its wonderfully relaxed venue in Chintsa East will finish this year. We've been told that the owner of the venue

will be taking the premises back and so the last Sunday lunch at Chintsa will be served on Sunday 31 August 2014.

There is some good news though!Between now and the 31 August the Kitchen will be open

every Sunday lunch for their wonderful seafood buffet with carvery, and most Wednesday nights for either their family buffet or a'la carte.

They're already taking bookings for Mothers' Day on Sunday 11 May which is just around the corner, so if you'd like to join them for that last (or second or third last) Chintsa Kitchen fix please give them a call to book on 043 738 5226 or email Lou [email protected]

There's still time to bring the family, relax on the stoep and enjoy that famous home cooked fare before the restaurant is no more!

Our Chapter of the society was established in February 2008 as the official body of the South African Koi Keepers Society in the Eastern Cape.

Koi- keeping in the Eastern Cape is growing as a hobby and we have many beautiful ponds in and round our city. These living jewels swimming in their ponds

have made numerous gardens a place of exotic tranquility, attracting the attention of many admirers. Today, hobbyists all over the world keep koi fish, which are symbolic of peace, longevity and love.

Koi come in combinations of white, orange, black, red, yellow, blue, cream and silver. The varieties are based on colours and pattern: for example, Kohaku (red pattern on white), Chagoi (olive or brown), Asagi (indigo or blue), Tancho (solid-coloured body with a red spot on the head) and Showa (a calligraphic black pattern on a Kohaku).

They range in length between 10cm to 100cm, depending on age and living environment. Prices start at R50 for pond fish but can soar to R600,000 for the most prized specimens. Majority of the top Koi in South Africa are imported from Japan, however there are a few local Breeders that are breeding high quality Koi that compete favourably with the imports.

KOI enthusiasts and the general public alike will have the chance to see some of the Eastern Cape's finest Koi at the seventh annual show and competition hosted by the Eastern Cape Chapter of South African Koi Keeper's Society.

In addition to the ponds showcasing Koi entries of all sizes and varieties, there will also be Koi for sale at various dealer ponds. Koi related products such as biological filter systems, pond accessories, fish foods and medications, books on Koi and various Koi mementoes will be exhibited. The event will allow the public the opportunity to learn about Koi and the Koi hobby through members of the South African Koi Keeper's Society who'll be on hand to provide expert advice and answer any Koi related queries on a one to one basis.

This very intimate show will include sto-rytelling by Johnny Clegg, where he talks about the events in his life and political history of South Africa and the world at that time that motivated him to write that song. It is a personal journey, which is uplifting, moving and also humorous at times. Johnny Clegg is a dancer, anthro-pologist, singer, songwriter, academic, activist and French knight.
