At Mareel, we love listening to live music and the venue has been specifically designed with great acoustics in mind. We have an excellent selection of events lined up in the Auditorium and other spaces in Mareel, and this booklet highlights everything currently confirmed for this month and beyond.

At the Café Bar in Mareel we pride ourselves on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients to create delicious, rustic dishes and refreshments - the perfect accompaniment to a day out at Mareel. The Café Bar plays host to regular events which are free to attend, from live music to DJs, the details of which you can find in this booklet.

Shetland Arts Development Agency manages Mareel, the Garrison Theatre & Bonhoga Gallery. We also develop and promote a year round programme of film, music, theatre, literature, visual arts & dance events.

We do this because we want to see Shetland celebrated as a place where inspiration & innovation are valued; where people want to live, work & study; and we want the full social & economic potential of the islands to be achieved.

Shetland Arts is supported by Creative Scotland and core funded by the Shetland Charitable Trust. Shetland Arts is a registered charity (SCO37082).

SINGERS & SONGWRITERS NIGHTSUNDAY 9 MARCH, FROM 7pmMonthly Singers & Songwriters Night with performances from great local acts plus an open mic session. Takes place in the Main Auditorium via Café Bar entrance. For regular updates on the Singers & Songwriters Nights, join the Shetland Singers and Songwriters Group on Facebook.

MONTHLYFILM QUIZTUESDAY 11 MARCH,FROM 7.30pmFor film buffs and novices alike. A small prize will be awarded to the teams with the highest and lowest scores. Max team size: 6 people. Quiz takes place in the Main Auditorium via Café Bar entrance.*£5 per table to enter, pre-booked via Shetland Box Office.

Skilfully adapted for the stage War Horse was an instant hit when it opened at the National Theatre back in 2007. Packed with moving music and songs, this hugely inventive production features breathtaking life sized horse puppets by South Africa’s acclaimed Handspring Puppet Company. An international smash hit, War Horse has been seen by more than four million people worldwide.

Shetland College HNC music students present their latestcompositions - all inspired by our relationship with the weather.Follow the students through the building as they perform sevennew pieces live. Discover some of the hidden wonders ofMareel on a journey through different moods, styles andweather conditions.

This will constitute the official launch of the Weather Stations Exhibition where another seven original pieces will be presented via various listening posts around Mareel. The exhibition will run until the end of March.

Fans of the the Saw Doctors have been lamenting the fact that the band have been taking a break, but now to temporarily fill that gap, two of the band members, vocalist Leo Moran and bassist/saxophonist Anthony Thistlethwaite, have struck out on their own as a duo.

SUNDAY 23 MARCHDoors: 7pm, Start: 7.30pmCatriona & Olov met in 2002 when Väsen and Fiddlers’ Bid shared a concert in Stockholm. A new sound was experienced that had to be explored further! They have toured extensively in recent years with their unique collaboration of Scottish harp and Swedish nyckelharpa. The two harpists have developed a common core, combining experience of different traditions with a drive to energise and inspire.

Bright Club is the freshest thing in stand-up - an academic comedy cocktail synthesised for your entertainment and enlightenment. Their unique twist of pun-fact variety show blends comedy and research with diverse subjects ranging from Art to Zoology.Tickets: £10 (Over 18’s only)

STRIP MS:Helping to Strip Away the Problems of Living with MSSaturday 5 AprilDoors: 8pm, Start: 8.30pmAll proceeds will be donated to MS Society Shetland. DECLAN O’ROURKEFriday 25 JulyDoors: 7pm, Start: 7.30pmClassy contemporary Dublin singer-songwriter Declan O’Rourke’s honey-deep vocals were previously heard in the isles as part of the 2012 Transatlantic Sessions show. O’Rourke will draw on material from his three solo records, Since Kyabram, Big Bad Beautiful World and Mag Pai Zai. The 37-year-old’s work has been covered by a host of big name acts including Paul Weller, who described the song Galileo (Someone Like You) as “possibly the greatest song written in the last 30 years.” £16 / £14
