Music director Gary Lucas worked with both Tim and Jeff, lending this concert a powerful authority, enhanced by images and words evoking the Buckleys’ unique magic. Michael Falzon and Bobby Fox interpret Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello’s heartbreaking album Painted from Memory and more.In the late 90s, Burt Bacharach teamed up with the inimitable Elvis Costello to create the remarkable song ‘God Give Me Strength’. Bacharach and Costello continued to write together, earning a Grammy Award for ‘I Still Have That Other Girl’ from the 1998 album Painted From Memory.

In its mid-year concert Corpus Medicorum presents Mozart’s Oboe Concerto performed by the very talented young oboe virtuoso Andrew Kawai, followed by Mahler’s great Symphony No.1, Titan.

Returning 35 years after his first Australian Tour, ‘The Chinese Yehudi Menuhin’ Zhongguo Sheng and his soul mate, Japanese pianist Hiroko Seta, will ignite Melbourne with a night of Timeless Melody. The duo will bring China’s most spectacular love story, The Butterfly Lovers to life on stage, which is known as the oriental Romeo and Juliet. Zhonguo Sheng’s rendition of the piece confronts love and death through exquisite techniques and poetic expression with his understanding of both Eastern and Western music.

In 1980, Sheng became the first Chinese solo artist to perform in Australia. His successful tour of Australia ultimately led the ABC to list Zhongguo Sheng as ‘one of the world’s greatest artists’. In 1979, Sheng performed Bach’s Double Concerto with Yehudi Menuhin, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, and was praised by Menuhin as ‘the best partner in China to perform Bach’.

Audiences and critics alike are wild about the extraordinary Florian Boesch. The bass-baritone made his debut at Austria’s Schubertiade festival in 2002 and his star keeps rising. He has already made his mark on the operatic stage with Don Giovannis and Papagenos from Vienna to Tokyo. It is, however, in the intense and intimate space of lieder — German art song — that he has made the biggest splash.

When Boesch performed Schubert’s Winterreise at Carnegie Hall with legendary lieder pianist Malcolm Martineau, The New York Times’ critic wrote, ‘song recitals don’t come much better or more transporting than this’. The sentiment has been echoed around the world, both for Boesch’s gripping live performances and for the acclaimed series of CDs he’s recorded with Martineau. The song cycles will be performed over three consecutive evenings in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

Austrian baritone Florian Boesch was born in Vienna, where he received his initial vocal training from Ruthilde Boesch. In 1997, he began studies at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Vienna, concentrating on the fields of lieder and oratorio with his teacher Robert Holl. He subsequently appeared with the Vienna Chamber Opera and has since been heard in a number of Mozart and Handel operas at international venues. Boesch is counted as one of today's foremost lieder interpreters, with appearances at Vienna’s Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Edinburgh International Festival, Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle, Schwetzinger Festival, and with Philharmonie Luxembourg in the USA and Canada. He will be joined by Edinburgh-born pianist Malcolm Martineau, recognised as one of the leading Schubertians of his generation.

A moonlit Bavarian forest and the vast Latvian lowlands are the backdrop for this concert of miracles, magic and wonder. Arnold Schoenberg plunged the deepest, darkest corners of Romanticism in his portrayal of love, new life and ultimate acceptance inspired by the poetry of Richard Dehmel. Originally a wordless meditation for choir and strings, Vasks’ Plainscapes explores the complex relationship between nature and man and the fragile beauty of life. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Benaud Trio and their concerts look nostalgically to some favourite pieces but also enthusiastically into the future with new music from composers with whom the Trio feels a special connection.

Li-Wei, Natsuko & KristianThe second concert in ‘Kristian Chong & Friends’ features three of Australia’s leading musicians and close friends presenting three outstanding works in one of the finest chamber concerts in Melbourne this year. Concerto for Blues Harmonica was composed by Johanna Selleck in 2010 in collaboration with Corky Siegel. Renowned for his joyful spontaneity and exuberance, Siegel is one of the world’s great blues-harmonica masters and is returning to Australia especially for the world premiere of the revised concerto. The performance brings together some of Australia’s most outstanding classical and jazz performers in group improvisations, selections from Siegel’s chamber music, and Selleck’s concerto.

In the second of the New Palm Court Orchestra’s Essence series, NPCO cellist Anna Orzech, violinist Jeremy Blackman and pianist/composer Gemma Turvey perform music from and inspired by Classical, Celtic, and Hebraic traditions, including original compositions and improvisations alongside timeless works by Ernest Bloch and Manuel de Falla.

Something BlueSomething Blue explores the many meanings of ‘blue’. A feeling of blue is evident in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No.2, written in memory of a friend. Australian composer Maria Grenfell utilises the word in the title of her A Feather of Blue, itself a phrase taken from a poem by Kevin Ireland, ‘A View From A Window’. The Piano Trio in B-flat by Australian composer Frederick Kelly is a grandiose work in the Romantic tradition. However, his life was tragically cut short at the Battle of the Somme in World War I.

This Spirit of India double-bill welcomes to Australia for the first time eminent Carnatic veena player Dr Jayanthi Kumaresh and admired classical singer Pandit Kaivalya Kumar. The veena is India’s most ancient and revered musical instrument and closest to the human voice. All the Hindu gods and goddesses are associated with it, especially Saraswati, who is shown in painting and sculpture playing the instrument. It is believed that you will attain immortality if you can play the veena well. Jayanthi is the most eminent veena player in India and is the pupil of Balachander, the erratic genius who dominated South Indian music in the second half of the 20th century. Pandit Kaivalya Kumar is one of India’s best loved and admired classical singers from the north. Through his grandfather and father, he inherits and continues the noble tradition of Hindustani Kirana gharana singing style, developed by the great master Abdul Karim Khan.

Chronos – The God of TimeThroughout history, time has been viewed as both a forward arrow and as a circle forever tracing over itself. Syzygy Ensemble explores both these notions respectively through Wesley-Smith’s D.B. which constantly transforms its material without ever repeating it, and Maxwell Davies’ Fantasia on a Ground which relies on the constant repetition of a bass-line for its power (and humour). Most impressive of all though, is Berg’s concept of ‘mirrored-time’ in his Adagio; in the middle of the piece a clock chimes midnight and time briefly stands still, before the whole piece runs backwards, creating a 10-minute-long palindrome.INFORMATION

The School for LoversSpend an hour with good company, great music & light refreshments.

Although well received in Mozart’s day, Così fan tutte was generally considered a bit too risqué for audiences throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries and it is only more recently that its ebullient, melodious charm has begun to grace opera houses once more. Mozart’s comic tale of manipulative and unfaithful lovers would seem perfectly at home in a modern day soap opera but his music is undoubtedly timeless. The C major Piano Concerto No.21, K.467, is perhaps the most famous of all Mozart’s piano concerti, thanks to its prominent featuring on the soundtrack of the 1967 Swedish film, Elvira Madigan, with its famous slow movement prefiguring the beguiling lyricism of Chopin and the Romantics. A distillation of musical effervescence, Schubert’s fifth symphony brings this program to a close with a symphonic expansion of the composer’s gift for song-like melody and transparent textures.

This stripped back performance by two of Australia’s most respected musicians presents reinterpretations of some of the great love songs of the past 50 years. These songs were selected because of their ability to connect on a deep emotional level and more importantly, because they have influenced both artists at some point in their lives.

Kate Ceberano, the high priestess of pop and an award-winning jazz singer, has lived the rock-star life that many jazz vocalists dream of. After 24 albums, countless awards, TV appearances, festival highlight performances and generally prolific creative output, Kate stands as the icon emerging artists appeal to for hope,

integrity and pride in their work. She is more than a national treasure, she is a cultural diplomat and carries with her the torch to light a thousand paths for the future of live jazz vocalists everywhere. Kate brings with her long-time musical partner Paul Grabowsky. The two have not worked this intimately since their legendary heydays together at the Continental in Prahran in 1996. Paul’s contribution to Australian jazz is vast and deep, and his influence underscores generations with his wise, wonderful and whimsical way of approaching music making. The performance will also include Grabowsky originals and hits and memories re-interpreted from the Ceberano songbook.

Some artists make their mark as explosive young prodigies. Others take time to develop their technique and, with it, a mature and nuanced artistic vision. Then there are those rare individuals who, like a great bottle of wine, just keep getting better and better. Pinchas Zukerman is one of those. His career spans half a century: he recorded his first Mendelssohn with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, his first Tchaikovsky with Antal Doráti and the London Symphony Orchestra and partnered Isaac Stern in Mozart and Bach on both violin and viola. He launched his conducting career with the English Chamber Orchestra in 1970 and currently holds positions with the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Ottawa and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London. Pinchas is deeply committed to developing the next generation of musicians, leading innovative education programs in London, New York, China, Israel and Ottawa. Brothers Brett Dean (viola) and Paul Dean (clarinet), combine their talents with Lisa Moore (piano) in a virtuosic program of classic and modern works. Opening with the stately flow of Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio, Brett Dean then delivers a striking personal tribute to a revered Berlin Philharmonic colleague in his Sketches for Siegbert. The first half concludes with the mysteriously titled *** Trio by Martin Bresnick. Enigma — An IntrospectiveTake a musical journey through a re-defined landscape of diverse musical elements creating mood and atmosphere. From string trio to ambient opera soaked realms, through to world and urban infused beats, all immersed in an audio/visual projection with electronic sound- bytes. Enigma is a cross-pollination of beats worked in with minimal jazz inflections and popular song structures.

Ben Opie and Melissa Doecke are the Artistic Directors of this dynamic new group devoted to performing the finest music of all ages. The group re-invigorates the classics of master composers of the past, performing and collaborating with outstanding musicians, artists, dancers and the latest technology, and inspiring and commissioning composers to create masterworks of the future. Between them, Inventi Ensemble members have performed at festivals worldwide including the BBC Proms, Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music, Lucerne Festival Academy and worked with international orchestras and ensembles and are recording artists on the Master Performers record label. They premiere several new works composed for the ensemble.

Melbourne-based living treasure Julian Yu’s Piano Quartet is known for its clarity and distinctive musical language. Originally a piano trio, this valuable work in the Australian piano quartet oeuvre will receive its premiere at Melbourne Recital Centre. Also on the program is Alex Pozniak, often considered the enfant terrible of the Sydney contemporary music scene. Australia Piano Quartet presents the Melbourne premiere of his ground-breaking new work Bordersongs. Reflecting on his Polish background and the struggles faced by refugees in modern Australia, Bordersongs is sure to present the piano quartet at the precipice of what the genre can be.

Hailed as ‘prodigiously talented’ (Washington Post) and praised for her ‘freedom, mastery and fantasy’ (La Libre, Belgium), Australian Susie Park has gained worldwide recognition for her emotional range and dynamic stage presence. In this Salon: Solo performance Susie explores Aaron Copland’s elegiac Sonata for violin and piano, which was dedicated to the memory of a friend tragically killed in the First World War. Ravel’s virtuosic Sonata for violin and piano was a late composition in Ravel’s life, written after his musical language had developed beyond his early Impressionistic style, it masterfully brings together a range of disparate musical influences, from the avant-garde bitonality of Satie and Stravinsky to the popular rhythms of jazz and blues. Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso rounds out the program on a lighter note, brimming as it does with lyrical charm and graceful, virtuosic élan.

‘To Music’

Cosmo Cosmolino, an ensemble of strings, accordion and voices, explores the music of Eastern-Europe and the Mediterranean through new arrangements of their favourite composers, performing their own original works and unique settings of folk tunes. Paul Lewis A great piano recital is chamber music in its purest form, intimate but universal. In the hands of a master such as Paul Lewis, it can be a transcendent experience and a personal sharing of ideas and emotions. Music by Brahms lies at the centre of this program. His Ballades Op.10 were written when he was a very young man, and their easy melodiousness is tempered by melancholy. The Intermezzi Op.117 came at the other end of his life, when his vows of retiring were often stalled by the creation of new pieces of innovative beauty. Brahms always struggled with ‘the heavy tread’ of Beethoven, the great master whose works, he felt, were so good as to make life almost impossible for the composers who came after him. Paul Lewis bookends the program with two of Beethoven’s last works for piano, highlighting the musical relationships between the composers. The word ‘monumental' is sometimes applied too lightly, but here it’s completely apt. With these late sonatas

Beethoven did what he had previously done to the concerto and the symphony – turned them from showpieces or mere entertainment, into art.

Garrick Ohlsson is no devil, but he is fiendishly talented. Last year he was awarded another accolade, the 2014 Jean Gimbel Lane Prize in Piano Performance from Northwestern University. It places him in the highest echelon of pianists in the world today, sharing the title with previous winners including Stephen Hough, Yefim Bronfman and Murray Perahia. If anyone is a match for Schubert’s Wanderer-fantasie, a veritable Mount Everest of the piano, it is Ohlsson. After almost half a century on the concert platform he brings an encyclopaedic knowledge of the repertoire to his art, not to mention an exceptional span – he can stretch a 12th on the keyboard with his left hand.

This award-winning master musician now returns to Melbourne for a recital which mixes fiery brilliance with voluptuous joy. The grand edifice that is Schubert’s Wanderer-fantasie stands with the breath-catching beauty of Beethoven’s late, great, Piano Sonata Op.110. Completing the program is Garrick Ohlsson’s own selection from a work critic Ernest Newman described as ‘a gorgeous treat for the fingers’, the vibrant Goyescas of Granados. Mozart’s Fortepiano with Kristian Bezuidenhout & Australian Brandenburg OrchestraLoved by players and audiences alike, Kristian Bezuidenhout is part of the Brandenburg family. To honour this connection, and Bezuidenhout’s continued ascendency in the music world, Australian Brandenburg Orchestra Artistic Director Paul Dyer took great pleasure in offering him the opportunity to guest direct and conduct a concert series in 2015. Family, both literal and musical, play an important role in the program Bezuidenhout has devised, starting with two wonderful sinfonias by J.S. Bach’s oldest and youngest children: the more traditional W.F. Bach, who worked in the style of his father; and the more contemporary J.C. Bach – whose compositions had a direct influence on Mozart’s concerto style. Directing the Brandenburg from his beloved fortepiano, Bezuidenhout will perform perhaps the finest of Mozart’s keyboard concertos – the dramatic Piano Concerto in D minor. Following this, the delicate joy of Mozart’s Andante for flute, featuring the Orchestra’s own principal flute, Melissa Farrow will lift spirits. And as a fitting climax for such a brilliant young musician as Kristian, the lilting and exuberant Linz Symphony – written in only a few days, yet full of depth and sophistication.

Barney has also performed/toured with major U.S. artists Kurt Rosenwinkel, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Cobb, Eddie Henderson and Dewey Redman, as well as leading his own ensembles. For this solo concert he draws on spiritual harmonies he learned playing in the African–American church for a decade, blended with slow meditative ambiences, in a unique and uplifting experience.

Last year Simone Young electrified Melbourne audiences with her enthralling account of Brahms’ Fourth Symphony. She returns in 2015 to lead the ANAM Orchestra in Brahms’ radiant Second Symphony, sharing her unique insights into the great Romantic repertoire. Also featuring Australia’s most highly awarded soprano Emma Matthews, this concert promises to be irresistible.

Mozart’s Symphony No.40Across the gulf of two centuries, Mozart and Stravinsky created distinctive works shaped and inspired by the rigor of classical forms. Stravinsky’s Octet for Winds, an early neo-classical masterpiece performed here by the wind section of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO), and the composer’s compact Concerto in D – led by MSO Concertmaster Eoin Andersen – are balanced by Mozart’s Violin Concerto No.5, a youthful work of matchless elegance and execution. With its famous melancholic opening theme, Mozart’s Symphony No.40 hints at a deep disquiet beneath its trademark refinement.

Alongside premiering a new work for the Melbourne Guitar Quartet (MGQ) by highly acclaimed Australian composer, Robert Davidson, MGQ also performs one of the most influential and trailblazing works ever written for the ‘guitar family’, composed by Phillip Houghton. Teaming up once more with the

remarkable Ron Murray (didgeridoo) this concert undoubtedly captures the spirit of what it is to be a ‘Local Hero’, celebrating some of the country’s greatest composers and artists. The program will also premiere new arrangements of works by Ligeti and Britten for the guitar family.

The exciting young Australian ensemble Orava Quartet is best known to Melbournians through its prize-winning appearances at the 2013 Asia-Pacific Chamber Music Competition. They return to make their Coffee Concerts debut with a polished program of Haydn and Mendelssohn, and the excitement of a world premiere from talented young Melbourne composer Kym Dillon.

In 2014, Australian Octet gave audiences their first taste of a new kind of chamber music concert. An ensemble grander than a quartet and more intimate than an orchestra; a concert experience filled with spectacular soloistic writing, symphonic textures, pinpoint precision and high-octane energy. Australian Octet returns with a dramatic program of chamber music featuring two of the greatest works of festival chamber music. The iconic work for string sextet, Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence is a feast of bravura string playing. Penned during the composer’s summer sojourn in 1890, its unique musical language fuses Russian melody and rhythm with the Western tradition. It is matched with Bruch’s lustrous final masterpiece, the Concerto for Octet, and a new work specially commissioned for Australian Octet by acclaimed Australian composer Paul Stanhope.

Tim and Jeff Buckley’s legacy has inspired generations of musicians and listeners. A State of Grace celebrates their brilliant, complicated lives and music, bringing together six stellar singers and musicians who worked with the Buckleys with images and stories. It is a moving, definitive portrait of two of the most beloved voices in rock, overseen by Gary Lucas, the legendary New York guitarist/composer who worked closely with Jeff, co-writing the immortal songs ‘Grace’ and ‘Mojo Pin’.

Jeff Buckley completed only one studio album in his too-brief life, but it made him one of the most influential musicians of the 1990s and beyond. His commanding stage presence, boy-next-door good looks and rich musical vocabulary were matched by a voice that could soar with the angels. Grace, that fragile yet ferocious miracle of an album, moved millions, earning Buckley an almost evangelical following. The ultimate musician’s musician, his fans include Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, Chris Cornell and Thom Yorke. After Jeff’s tragic accidental death in the Mississippi River, U2’s Bono told a stadium audience, ‘Jeff Buckley was a pure drop in an ocean of noise.’

Jeff only met his father Tim a handful of times during his even shorter life; Tim died in 1975, aged 28. But the musical legacy Tim left behind – a wildly eclectic and brilliant collection of eight studio albums – served as Jeff’s musical touchstone. Tim also influenced his contemporaries Van Morrison, James Taylor and Leonard Cohen, and such 21st-century acts as Fleet Foxes and Beth Orton. Jeff strived for the same kind of far-reaching, liberating and often downright sexy music that Tim produced during landmark LPs Blue Afternoon and 1972’s Greetings from LA. As Rolling Stone magazine once declared, ‘Tim Buckley embodied all the virtue of grace.’

Assembled to recapture the magic of Tim and Jeff Buckley’s songs are musicians with the depth, breadth and empathy to do them justice: Martha Wainwright, Casper Clausen (of Efterklang), Willy Mason, Camille O’Sullivan, Steve Kilbey and Cold Specks, led by guitarist/producer Gary Lucas with his band Gods and Monsters. Tim and Jeff’s music becomes a point of departure for soul-stirring reinterpretation and exploration in this world premiere event.

There is little doubt that Haydn and Beethoven remain towering greats of the Quartet genre, and although Bach did not write specifically for the string quartet, his Art of Fugue is perhaps one of the greatest musical conversations of all time. Haydn’s Op.20 Quartets are considered defining works of the genre and the second quartet fascinates with an operatic sense of grand gesture and drama. Be Not Afraid Of Greatness

Quartz is a refreshing and exciting string quartet of highly acclaimed Melbourne musicians, joined by local harpist Marshall McGuire for this program of classic beauty. Both Bax (English composer and poet) and Korngold (famous for his film scores in the 1930s and 40s) described their desire to continue to express emotion through lyrical writing, despite (indeed, in response to) the turmoil of world events and the prevalence of atonalism in the early 20th century. Verdi, a master of operatic emotional expression, wrote only one instrumental composition: String Quartet in E minor, composed during a hiatus before the opening of Aida in Naples in 1873.

Performances with this symbol have a Babes in Arms policy. Babies under the age of two may attend free of charge and be admitted without a ticket, on the condition that they do not occupy a seat and sit on the lap of a parent or guardian.
