Saving your queries

In earlier releases of Capture CIS, you were only able to use the query feature in the CISexplorer window to locate parts in the database that fit a set of criteria. Now in Capture CIS15.7, you will be able to:

■ Save your queries

■ Retrieve your saved queries

■ Modify your saved queries

■ Delete your saved queries

Mouse wheel support in database parts window (CIS Explorer)

In Capture CIS 15.7 you can:

■ Roll the mouse wheel up and down to scroll through vertically in the database partswindow.

■ Hold down the SHIFT key and roll the mouse wheel up and down to scroll throughhorizontally in the database parts window.

■ Click the mouse wheel button and drag it to the right or left in the database parts windowto scroll horizontally.

■ Click the mouse wheel button and drag it up or down in the database parts window toscroll vertically.



Support for Version 11.0 of Crystal Reports

Now, Capture CIS provides the redistributable runtime of Crystal Reports 11.0 for Bill ofMaterials.

Faster invocation of tool by configuring license feature string

You can configure the default license feature string on a computer for faster invocation of toolsin OrCAD Capture CIS 15.7. The File menu now has the Change Product command(keyboard shortcut ALT, F, C) that allows you to select a product suite from which to openCapture CIS wthout having to exit the tool. Also, you can set as default a product suite fromwhich Capture CIS should check out a license each time you start the tool. Setting the defaultoption will not display the suite selection dialog box the next time you start the tool. However,if you want this dialog box to be displayed again then clear the Use as default check box inthe suite selection dialog box

Multimedia Demonstrations

This release has the following new multimedia demonstration:

■ Saving queries

To access the multimedia demonstrations, point to the Help menu and choose theDocumentation command. The OrCAD Capture Help System - Documentation page opens.Click the Learning Aids tab to view all the multimedia demonstrations.

These demonstrations run as stand-alone files from the browser window and require the one-time installation of a Flash plug-in.

OrCAD Capture CIS 10.5 brings you the following new features and enhancements:

Setting Preferences for Linking a Placed Part to a Database Part

Capture CIS 10.5 now allows you to set preferences for linking a placed part to a databasepart. Use the Extended CIS Linking dialog box to specify whether you want to:

■ replace the symbol, reference designator, and all the properties of the placed part withthat of the database part.

■ replace the symbol and all the other properties of the placed part with that of thedatabase part, but retain the placed part reference designator.

■ replace all the properties of the placed part with that of the database part, but retain theplaced part symbol and the reference designator.

To access the Extended CIS Linking dialog box, select Options > CIS Preferences >Extended CIS Linking. For more information, see the section Setting linking preferencesin the OrCAD Component Information System User’s Guide.

Now you can also link part occurrence (s) to a database part. You can select whether youwant to link all the occurrences of a selected part (s) or only the selected occurrences (s) ofa part to a database part. You specify these options in the Occurrence Level Settings dialogbox, which appears only when the selected part (s) has more than one occurrence in thedesign. For more information, see the section Linking part occurrence (s) to a databasepart in the OrCAD Component Information System User’s Guide.

Viewing Design Variants Information

In earlier releases of Capture CIS, the variant information (different property values forcommon components or different or not present components for identical footprints on aschematic page) could be viewed only in the Print Preview window. Now, in Capture CIS 10.5you can view variant information for all the design variants defined in your project on aschematic page using the View Variant Mode command. You can access the Variant ViewMode command from the View menu. You can also view the properties for the variants in the



Variant property viewer. For more information, see the section Viewing design variants ona schematic page in the OrCAD Component Information User’s Guide.

You can also now search for a specific design variant component on a schematic page usingthe Find command. For more information, see the section Searching for variantinformation on a schematic page in the OrCAD Component Information User’s Guide.

Capture CIS 10.5 allows you to customize how you want to display the design variantinformation on a design variant schematic page. You can choose from different colorcombinations to display the variant information. The options are available in the Preferencesdialog box. For more information, see the section Customizing variant information displayon a schematic page in the OrCAD Component Information User’s Guide.

You can now preview and print design variant schematic pages. For more information, seethe section Previewing or printing design variant schematic pages in the OrCADComponent Information User’s Guide.

Multimedia Demonstrations

OrCAD Capture CIS 10.0 Service Pack 2 brings you the following new feature:

Cross probing from Part Manager to Schematic

Until Capture CIS 10.0 Service Pack 1, viewing a part and its properties on the Captureschematic while working with it in Part Manager was cumbersome. You had to remember thereference designator of the part and find it in the Capture schematic. This was very timeconsuming.

From 10.0 Service Pack 2 onwards, you can perform cross probing from Part Manager to theschematic and highlight parts. So, while working with a part in Part Manager, you can nowmake it highlighted in the schematic and view its properties.

To perform cross probing from Part Manager to the schematic

1. Select the part in Part Manager.

2. Right-click the part and choose Goto Part On Schematic from the popup menu.

OR

Choose Edit > Goto Part On Schematic from the menu.

The part gets highlighted in the schematic. If the schematic is not already open, it isopened.

OrCAD Capture CIS 10.0 Service Pack 1 brings you the following new features andenhancements:


■ Support for Allegro PCB Editor Assembly Drawing Variants



Support for Allegro PCB Editor Assembly Drawing Variants

In Allegro PCB Editor, you can now view the assembly drawings for the variants of a designcreated in Capture CIS. The information about the variants, the part changes for the variantsof the design, can be exported to the variants.lst file. Allegro PCB Editor can use this file toimport information about the variants. Thus, the variants.lst file serves as a mechanism forpassing variant information to Allegro PCB Editor.

Once you are done with creating variants for a design, you can create the variants.lst file inCIS. You can create this file using the Export Variants.lst dialog box. This can then beimported in the board in Allegro PCB Editor.

To create the variants.lst file, CIS needs two inputs:

1. Information about the variants of the design. This is obtained from the CIS database.

2. Information about the mappings between properties in Capture and those in Allegro PCBEditor. This is given by you in the variant.cfg file.

The Variant.cfg File

The mappings between CIS property names and Allegro PCB Editor injected property namesare specified in the variant.cfg file. A sample variant.cfg file is located in the same folder asthe Capture.exe file. The variant.cfg file contains entries of the following types:

■ <CIS property name> = YES

This means that <CIS property name> has significance in Allegro PCB Editor. It needsto be written into the variants.lst file. A space in the property name is replaced by an



underscore. For example, Part Number = YES is written as Part_Number in thevariants.lst file.

■ <CIS property name> = NO

This means that <CIS property name> does not have any significance in Allegro PCBEditor. It does not have to be written into the variants.lst file.

■ <CIS property name> = <Allegro PCB Editor Property Name>

This means that the equivalent of <CIS property name> in Allegro PCB Editor is <AllegroPCB Editor Property Name>. So, the entry in the variants.lst file is made as <Allegro PCBEditor Property Name>. For example, PCB Footprint = JEDEC_TYPE is written asJEDEC_TYPE in the variants.lst file.

To create the Variants.lst File

1. From the Tools menu, choose Export Variant List. The Export Variants.lst dialog boxappears.

2. The Output File (Variants.lst) Path field specifies the default location for the Variants.lstfile. The default location is the Allegro folder in the design directory. You can change thispath also.

3. The Config File (Variant.cfg) Path field specifies the default path for the Variant.cfg file.The default path is the same as that of the Capture.exe file. You can change this pathalso.

4. Click Export.

CIS creates a Variants.lst file containing information about all the variants of the design.The properties listed are the ones specified in the Variant.cfg file.



Example

Let’s say you have a design containing three capacitors (C1, C2, C3) and three resistors(R1,R2, R3). You have created two variants, Var1 and Var2 as follows:

To create the variants.lst file, the information in the above table is needed along with theproperties that have to be passed to Allegro PCB Editor. So, if our variant.cfg file looks asfollows-

Easier CIS Configuration

In earlier versions of Capture CIS, you had to open a project before you could configure CIS.

Capture CIS 10.0, allows you to configure CIS without opening any project. The updatedconfiguration settings are applied to all projects that you open after configuring CIS.

Support for Regional Number and Currency Settings

In earlier versions of Capture CIS, numeric data and currency values from the CIS databasewere represented in a pre-defined format, regardless of the regional settings of yourcomputer. For example, if currency in a Microsoft Access database contained commas torepresent decimal points, Capture CIS would automatically adjust the decimal point characterto be a period and not according to the regional settings of the local system. This resulted indata inconsistency as number/currency formats vary from country to country. Anotherproblem was that irrespective of the number of decimal places present in a value in thedatabase, CIS displayed only till two decimal places and truncated the remaining digits.

In Capture CIS 10.0, numeric data and currency values are displayed and interpretedaccording to the regional settings of your computer (Control Panel > Regional Options >Numbers and Currency tabs).

CIS Explorer Improvements

The following improvements are available in CIS Explorer in Capture CIS 10.0:

■ Faster loading of the CIS Explorer

Current Capture CIS users will see improved performance in launching CIS Explorer.



■ Refresh part type information

In earlier versions of Capture CIS, modified part type information would not get updatedin CIS Explorer until you re-launched Capture CIS. Capture CIS 10.0 allows you torefresh the part type information without exiting Capture CIS.

From the Update menu in CIS Explorer, choose Refresh Part Types to refresh the parttype information displayed in CIS Explorer.

■ Refresh part list

In earlier versions of Capture CIS, a modified symbol or footprint would not get updatedin CIS Explorer until you re-launched Capture CIS. Capture CIS 10.0 allows you torefresh the symbol or footprint information without exiting Capture CIS.

From the Update menu in CIS Explorer, choose Refresh Symbols from Libs to refreshthe symbol or footprint information in CIS Explorer.

■ Japanese Character Support

CIS Explorer now supports Japanese characters so users can view all fields inJapanese.

■ Other Usability Enhancements

Previously, you could not switch between CIS Explorer and the schematic editor withoutminimizing the CIS Explorer window. A new Window menu allows you to switch betweenthe two.

Selective Part Status Update

In previous versions of Capture CIS, you had to update the part status for all the parts in aschematic with the parts in the database, if changes were made to any part in the database.

Capture CIS 10.0 allows you to update the part status for selected parts in the schematic withthe corresponding parts in the database. This saves time when you are working with largepart databases.

Enhancements in Capture CIS Reports

The following enhancements are available in the standard CIS BOM, Crystal Reports BOMand Variant reports in Capture CIS:

Enhancements in Variant Reports

The following enhancements are available in Variant Reports in Capture CIS 10.0:

■ Comprehensive Variant Reports

In previous versions of Capture CIS, variant reports displayed only the part reference andpart number properties. You could not include any other property in a variant report.Capture CIS 10.0 now allows you to include all database properties in variant reports.

■ Support for Merging Variant Reports

You can now generate a merged variant report that contains information on multiple BOMvariants. To do this, choose two or more variants in the Variant Reports dialog box andselect the Merge VARIANT Reports check box.

Support for Including Title Block Properties in Reports

Capture CIS 10.0 allows you to include title block properties in the standard CIS BOM, CrystalReports BOM and Variant reports. The title block property information is read from the firstschematic page in the design and displayed in the reports.

In the standard BOM and Variant reports, the title block information is displayed at thebeginning of the report. If you are a Crystal Reports user, you need to modify your CrystalReport template (.RPT) files to display the title block properties.

WYSIWYG Printing of BOM and Variant Reports

You can now print the Standard BOM and Variant reports. The printout will be in the sameformat as the report you see on the screen.

Variant editing improvements

Capture CIS Release 9.2.3, delivered as part of Cadence PSD 14.2, contains majorimprovements to the variant editing functionality. Variations in assemblies are often specificto a group or subset of components. To facilitate the handling of this requirement, the varianteditor now enables you to define component groups and variants in these groups prior to thecreation of the variant bill of materials (BOM).

and drop (copy and paste) groups, subgroups, and BOMs to create new groups, subgroups,and BOMs from an existing set of data. Although at this time Cadence has been unable toprovide the much requested WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) variant editing fromthe schematic page, you do have the ability to visually assign parts directly from theschematic page to a group, rather than having to remember and select the referencedesignators from the parts list in the part manager window.

Major enhancements to the existing variant functionality addressed thefollowing customer requests

■ Ability to create a new variant based on an existing variant.

■ Groups and subgroups are used as building blocks for new variants.

■ The variant property now prints within the title block.

Part manager enhancements

(PCRs 376095, 392213, 392226)

■ Table indicators are back and are viewable in the part manager window.

■ A tree view has been added to help with navigation of the variant groups and subsequentbills of materials.

■ Various minor issues associated with the part status have been fixed, and the tool tipfeedback is now more informative.

Improvements to the handling of multi-part packages

(PCRs 396870, 396868, 383127)

■ Part manager combines the gates of a multi-part package and displays the part as asingle component.

■ Capture CIS-generated bill of materials and variant reports now correctly handle thereporting of multi-part packages, only listing them once.

■ The part manager only reflects the reference designator without including the gatedesignator.



Capture CIS Standard Bill of Materials (BOM) issues addressed

(PCRs 354200, 347107)

A single entry (rather than multiple entries) is now maintained in the CAPTURE.INI filewhen new templates are created.

■ In Capture CIS, when creating a standard report, properties selected for reporting (suchas schematic database, or * sources) provide a means of publishing information from avariety of data sources.

In previous versions of Capture CIS, the first time a report was run, the correct sourcewas used and displayed, but when the report was run again, all the selected sourcesdefaulted to schematic data source. This has now been resolved, and the data source ismaintained.

■ You can merge any number of variant BOMs into a single report.

Capture CIS Crystal Reports issues addressed

(PCR 325575)

Memo data type is now supported during the reporting of the Reference Designator field,which allows an upper limit of 65535 characters. Reference designators are no longertruncated when running with the standard or compressed Reference Designator optionswhen creating reports.

All parts with the same reference designator appear in the part managerand in bill of materials reports

(PCR 340780)

This can occur when a number of parts in a design have the same part reference, althoughthey are totally different parts. In this release of Capture CIS, all parts appear in the partmanager since they are not part of the same package. To avoid confusion, you shouldrepackage your design before you proceed with any reporting.

You cannot link or set a component as not present from the part manager if multiple parts withthe same part reference are present in the design. You must annotate your design first so thatCIS can distinguish which part you want to modify.



Improvements to the way Capture CIS handles complex hierarchy

The part manager now lists all occurrences on separate lines. Occurrences can be separatedinto groups to use for building BOM variants. For more information on complex hierarchy, seethe Capture online help.

Forward compatibility of design variants

If you want to open a CIS design that was created before this release and that containsvariants:

1. Open the project in Release 9.2.3.

2. Open the part manager. Note that this operation may take several minutes to completewhile design variants are converted to the new format.

3. Save the design in the new version format. If you do not save your design in the newversion format, you will encounter slowness.

Derive database part issues

(PCR 372479)

In previous versions of Capture CIS, when you derived a new database part from theschematic page, a list of configured tables displayed. You could select a different table, butthe list of displayed properties did not refresh to reflect the selected table. The data enteredinto these property fields got pushed to the right table, but potentially in the wrong order. Ifthe first table had more properties than the original table, Capture could crash while trying toadd data to a property that does not exist.This has now been resolved.

Changes to Activeparts availability through the Internet ComponentAssistant (ICA)

Shortly after the acquisition of Orcad by Cadence Design Systems, Inc., Activeparts spun outof Cadence Design Systems to create a startup called SpinCircuit (www.SpinCircuit.com).SpinCircuit recently decided it can no longer provide free access to Activeparts through theInternet Component Assistant (ICA), built into Capture CIS. Cadence and SpinCircuit aredeveloping replacement solutions.

Currently, this issue is a work-in-progress. You can keep up to date with the progress byvisiting pcb.cadence.com or through the ICA tab at the bottom of your CIS explorer window.In the meantime, the following capabilities have been updated (PCRs 395727, 392212):



■ In Capture CIS configuration setup, you can no longer set your supplier preference forICA. This tab has been removed.

■ When creating either Standard Bill of Materials reports or Crystal Report Templates, it isno longer possible to include WWW Activepart properties.
