Not really much more to say about that! After an event in Lundar I usually get reflective, and always am so proud of my community and how everyone comes together to welcome others to join in the festivities we have to offer. This is not a task that is taken lightly by organizers, whose work on next years fair has already started! From phoning for concession workers, gate workers, parade entries, getting judges, planting flowers, everyone knows their part, and they proceed like a well orchestrated play! It’s really hard to pick anything that stood out, because everything was a lot of fun...wet...but fun! The midway was well attended, lots of burgers flipped, horses groomed, cattle getting bubble baths, smiles for winners, tears when the calf had to go, balloons being let go, fireworks, and all the while getting a visit in with someone you haven’t seen in quite a while. So a big thank you goes out to all those silent workers who gave of their time to make another successful fair. Congratulations also go out to the Lundar Agricultural Society for their continued work for our community. Good Work and Thank You Very Much

What’s Happening ?

60th Annual Lundar Fair Yup...it rained!! Not really much more to say about that!

After an event in Lundar I usually get reflective, and always am so proud of

my community and how everyone comes together to welcome others to join in the festivities we have to offer. This is not a task that is taken lightly by

organizers, whose work on next years fair has already started! From phoning

for concession workers, gate workers, parade entries, getting judges, planting

flowers, everyone knows their part, and they proceed like a well orchestrated

play! It’s really hard to pick anything that stood out, because everything was

a lot of fun...wet...but fun! The midway was well attended, lots of burgers flipped, horses groomed, cattle getting bubble baths, smiles for winners, tears

when the calf had to go, balloons being let go, fireworks, and all the while

getting a visit in with someone you haven’t seen in quite a while. So a big thank you goes out to all those silent workers who gave of their time

to make another successful fair. Congratulations also go out to the Lundar

Agricultural Society for their continued work for our community.

Tournament in Brandon. That year he won the following awards. Manitoba Minor Ball Player of the Year (again), Manitoba Male Athlete of the Year and just to finish the hat trick of awards he also took home the prestigious Canadian Baseball Player of the Year! What an amazing season! The major league scouts were drooling and the Fortin phone was now ringing off the hook. Blaine was highly rated and on June 1, 1995 while still not quite 18, Blaine Fortin was drafted by the To-ronto Blue Jays in the 6th round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He was the 3rd Canadian drafted that year and the highest selection of any Manitoban ever drafted. When asked for a high-light in such an illustrious ball career, Fortin replied, “catching for the legendary Roger Clemons” during a promotional event held by the Blue Jays in 1996. Over the years Blaine was introduced to, and coached, by some top baseball people, but still credits his father, Roy for having the most influence in his career. After a few years in the Blue Jays Organization, Blaine returned home to Lundar and is now coaching and mentoring young Inter-lake ball players.

Blaine Fortin was inducted into the

Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame on June 5, 2010

Further to our “mim-series” of stories about Lundar’s 5 Sports Hall-of-famers,

from our last issue, we are continuing with

another Hall-of-Famer Blaine Fortin, please enjoy his story.

The Arthritis Society Partners with W.O.W for Lundar Community Outreach The Arthritis Society Manitoba/Nunavut Division is partnering with Working on Wellness (W.O.W) to bring arthritis education programs to Lundar this spring and summer. Working on Wellness is a group program offered through the Interlake Regional Health Au-thority. They provide social, recreational, educational opportunities to adults who may be socially isolated due to the affects of a long standing mental illness. The program incorporates a variety of health promotion activities into a safe social setting. “Mental helath plays an important role in arthritis self-management”, says Bonnie Hopps, one of the Society’s Education Facilitators delivering the programs. “The pain of arthritis can pre-vent someone from being socially active, and can lead to depression. When WOW approached us, we knew this partnership would provide valuable information to the community.” The presentations are open to both WOW group members and the general public, at no charge. In April, 23 people from Lundar and Eriksdale participated in an Arthritis and Nutrition presentation that included a Tai Chi Community Leader Workshop. The Society returned in May to present Understanding Gibromyalgia and a Tai Chi Community Leader Workshop. On July 10, Society staff will deliver a Chronic Pain Management Workshop. Participants will learn techniques to deal with joint and muscle paiin of all types, and how to mange stress and fatigue, associated with arthritis and other chronic diseases. Another Tai Chi Workshop will be included, demonstrating movements that can be done stand-ing or sitting and are suitable for all levels of ability and activity. Participants will learn to teach the movement to others. Karen Sinclair, Resource Coordinator for the IRHA Mental Health Proctor Program is confident the partnership with the Arthritis Society will make a difference. “Many participants report that importance of social activity and inclusiveness to mental health recovery, we are proud to offer this program to clients in their home communities”, says Sinclair. To register for the July 10 presentation, call Paula Olafson at 204-762-5662. For more informa-tion about the Arthritis Society and the programs available for your community, call toll-free 1-800-321-1433, or visit the Society online at www.arthritis.ca.

How many of us have ever played in a national champion-ship? Probably very few. How about 2 national champion-ships, representing Manitoba, AND pitching in the final game to beat Ontario. This is the story of Blaine Fortin, (youngest son of Judy and Roy), who did this all by the ripe old age of 13. Growing up in Lundar there really wasn’t a lot of ball teams

to play on, but growing up in the Fortin family, it didn’t matter if you had a team to play with, you all just played catch or work your way up with your brothers, parents, aunties and uncles. This is where the foundation for Blaine’s baseball abilities were honed. In the summer of 1990, Blaine was invited to go to Bedford, Nova Scotia with C.P.A.C. the Manitoba Rep team participating in the Ca-nadian Cracker Jack Cup. Blaine pitched the final game that year beating Team Ontario to bring Manitoba a national bantam champi-onship. This was followed the next year with another trip to the nationals, this time being picked up by Legion 141. His summers were filled with baseball trips all over Manitoba and the rest of the country as he played on bantam and midget regional teams which would lead him to 3 Western Canadian and 4 Canadian National Tournaments. With a rocket for an arm, Blaine was a pitcher but soon settled in as a catcher and that he did very well, as many would be base stealers would find out. With tremendous strength at the plate this kid could do it all and at 15 found himself playing junior ball with Legion 141. He began to attract a lot of attention from the baseball world and in 1993 he won the Manitoba Minor Ball Player of the Year Award. This was quite an accomplishment but that was not enough for him so the next year 1994 he really lit it up, while playing on 5 different teams including Team Canada at the World Youth Baseball
