This presentation will explain the process of fi ling a claim for occupational disease (including legislated time limits), and provide an overview of how the WSIB adjudicates these claims. Participants will be given information regarding the legal test to establish a causal workplace relationship, the role of evidence, and available resources to provide additional education or assistance. The appeal process will also be discussed for both the WSIB Appeals Branch and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal.

Back by popular demand, this presentation will outline what Sitting Disease is and why it is such a health concern. Over the last decade, people have become less active and more obese. This has led to an increase in chronic disease such as diabetes and heart disease. Research shows that Canadian adults are now sedentary about 75% of their time. “Independent of physical activity, sitting too much is killing us!” An overview of the evidence related to risks from prolonged sitting and strategies to reduce these risks will be provided from an employee wellness and workplace production perspective.

Legislation, exemptions and upcoming changes, including restrictions on two-way radios, will also be discussed.

This session will provide an introduction to the hazard of falls in the workplace and why this is becoming a major focus for the Ministry of Labour. Aggression is a complex emotion often derived from anxiety, frustration, anger and lack of control. While workplace policies may control behaviour of employees, they do not control the immediate behaviour of clients or members of the public that your workforce may be dealing with. What safety precautions should you take when feeling threatened at work? How do you determine when a situation is getting out of control? Understand the behavioural signs (verbal and non-verbal) that preclude violence and what you can do to de-escalate a dangerous situation. Specifi c situations will be discussed to understand practical methods for dealing with each scenario.

Lung Health Hazards at Work: If You Can’t Breathe, Nothing Else Matters Gary M. Liss, MD, MS, FRCPC, Gage Occupational and Environmental Health Unit, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto

Compensable occupational lung illnesses causing death, such as asbestosis and silicosis, are some of the costliest WSIB claims. Not as well-known are occupational lung hazards which do not immediately cause death but can lead to permanent disability. Statistics show that work-related asthma is on the increase in Ontario, affecting 10 to 25% of adults with new-onset asthma. High risk industries include bakeries, auto and metal working plants using metal working fluids, expanded foam product manufacturing and use, construction, health care, cleaning, carpentry and forestry. Identification of lung-health hazards and potential lung allergens, as well as early effective preventive strategies, is vital in keeping your workers healthy.

The Ontario Human Rights Code requires employers to accommodate the needs of disabled and other prescribed groups of employees. Understand who is covered by the employer’s duty to accommodate. Concussions are considered the “invisible” injury since they do not show up on medical imaging tests, such as x-rays or CT scans, and because their eff ects are often misunderstood. Dr. Irvine will speak to the prevention of concussions, symptoms of a concussion, the eff ects of a concussion, when to return to activity and how employers can work with employees on return-to-work initiatives.

Automated Recycling Collection: Manual Materials Handling (Case Study)Randall Roy, Special Projects Coordinator (retired from) GFL Environmental

Ergonomic hazards and musculoskeletal safety issues associated with the manual collection of waste and recycling products is a major concern for the Ministry of Labour, the waste management sector and municipalities. In the fall of 2013, GFL Environmental implemented automated curbside recycling in Sault Ste. Marie to address injuries that its collectors were receiving. Learn what led GFL to propose this system, what impact it has had on their business and their people, and receive some takeaways that could be applied to other industries.

Policing Today through Community Engagement Chief Robert A. Keetch, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service

The police service recognizes that their current model of service is not effi cient, eff ective or economically sustainable. A new framework has been developed provincially and is moving forward in the Sault. Ontario’s Mobilization and Engagement Model of Community Policing is now operating out of the Neighbourhood Resource Center. In collaboration with our community partners, the framework for community well-being and safety involves emergency response, risk intervention, prevention and social development. The police service cannot be the sole owner of public safety issues. Learn how community partners and stakeholders will be involved in an eff ective way to increase community well-being and safety.

Asleep At the Wheel: Learning From Fatigue-Related TragediesJulia Lok, Account Manager, Workplace Safety & Prevention Services

Although everyone experiences an occasional sleepless night, some people may be chronically sleep-deprived and not realize it. This session will examine recent and historic tragedies in which shiftwork, sleep disorders and fatigue were contributing factors. It will also review common causes of fatigue in the workplace and present useful tips and resources that may improve your sleep quality and increase alertness on the job.

This fully interactive session involves a panel of occupational health and safety experts who will deliver an assessment on their current workplace violence and harassment practices and answer the challenges presented to them by the audience. Each expert will present their perspective and experience around implementing the legislation (Bill 168) and best practice around workplace violence and harassment. The session will continue with the panel chair inviting the audience to pose questions to the experts, as well as presenting a selection of pre-registered audience questions to the speakers and allow time for audience response.

This session will explore the background and impact of EVD and introduce practical strategies to prevent transmission and manage occupational exposure. This hands-on investigative session is back by popular demand with a new case study – this time a work refusal! You will investigate a work refusal and see if you can handle the heat, knowing full well that the MOL Inspector is coming in if you do not come up with some sound recommendations. As a team of investigators, you will review reports and documentation to get a better understanding of the issue to try to develop a resolution acceptable to the workplace parties involved.
