Dear Friends,
This Sunday we find more food on the summertime Scripture menu. Last week we heard about the big steak dinner (with homemade rolls) that Abraham and Sarah (and their servants) made for the heaven-ly visitors. And, of course, the hospitality of Mar-tha and Mary. This week, however, the food in the readings is somewhat more exotic… Jesus, in teaching about the power of prayer, stress-es the generous goodness of God. We hear about the “daily bread” but we also hear the striking im-age Jesus uses of a father of a family. In the image Jesus compares our giving to the giving God does. It is especially striking because of the examples He gives. Imagine a child asking his Dad for a fish. These days that isn’t as likely as in other times and places but it could happen. Instead of the fish, Je-sus’ image continues, imagine the Dad handing his son a snake! Yikes! It couldn’t happen! It is un-thinkable and unimaginable, yet Jesus forces us to think of it and to compare it to our way of giving. He does the same with an egg—forcing us to think of the possibility of a scorpion omelet! Double yikes! Jesus is simply teaching that we should trust that God’s answers to our prayers will be good and fit-ting—because He is good. And because He is bet-ter than we are. And because we, in our sinfulness, can even manage to give good gifts to our children in their need. Renew the way you pray. Be sure to ask for every good thing and more. Queridos Amigos, Este domingo encontramos más alimentos en el menú del verano de las Escrituras. La semana pasa-da escuchamos sobre la gran cena de bistec (filete, churrasco) (con panecillos caseros) que Abraham y Sarah (y sus sirvientes) hicieron para los visitantes celestiales. Y, por supuesto, la hospitalidad de Mar-ta y María. Sin embargo, esta semana, la comida en las lecturas es un poco más exótica... Jesús, al enseñar sobre el poder de la oración, hace énfasis en la bondad generosa de Dios. Escuchamos sobre el "pan de cada día" pero también percibimos la extraordinaria imagen que Jesús usa de un padre de familia. En ella, El compara nuestra entrega con lo que Dios nos regala. Es especialmente asombro-so los ejemplos que Él nos da. Imaginemos a un niño pidiéndole a su papá un pescado. Podría suceder, a pesar de que estos días no son como en otros tiempos. En lugar del pescado, la imagen de Jesús continúa, ¡imaginen al papá dándole una ví-bora a su hijo! ¡Ay! ¡Eso no podría pasar! Es in-creíble e inconcebible, pero Jesús nos obliga a pen-sar en ello y a compararlo con nuestra forma de proveer. Él hace lo mismo con un huevo -¡nos obli-ga a pensar en la posibilidad de una tortilla de es-corpión! ¡Doblemente Ay! Jesús simplemente nos está enseñando que debe-mos confiar en que las respuestas de Dios a nues-tras oraciones serán buenas y apropiadas—porque Él es bueno. Y porque Él es mejor que nosotros. Y porque nosotros, siendo pecadores, podemos darles buenos regalos a nuestros hijos en sus necesidades.
Renueven su forma de orar y asegúrense de pedir
cosas buenas y más. Confíen en que Su respuesta
será grandiosa.

We would be happy to cancel them for you. An Important Announcement Dear Parishioners, After much thought and prayer I have decided to seek new leadership for our Parish Music Programs. I am very grateful to Joleen Michalowicz for her many years of dedication to her ministry among us and for her love of this parish. I know that you all join me in these sentiments. Because of her long hours here each weekend, and the choirs she has established and grown, Joleen leaves big shoes to fill. Graciously, Joleen has agreed to con-tinue serving while we search for our next director. A search committee will assist me in reviewing ap-plicants. Please pray for the success of that work. Dear St. Anthony Families, It seems like the construction of our preschool just began; it is amazingly transformed and now the construction is almost complete. The progress is hard to believe; we are so blessed to have such a wonderful team working on this new part of our school. Providing a Christ-centered learning environment for our preschool children is at the very center of the mission of our Parish and School. I would like to thank everyone for all their prayers and support throughout this project; just a few months ago it was only a concept, a bunch of drawings. Within the next two weeks, our plans will become a reality. Please come and visit our new Pre-School on August 7th from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm; this is a chance to see our space coming together as well as Meet and Greet the teachers. Fr. Zuberbueler and I are committed to supporting our Parish Families; The Spirit of Saint Anthony Scholarship is here to help families that want to give their child the gift of attending Catholic School.
