Thirteen students from Sumter County participated in a 49-hour Production Technician program that prepares them for entry level positions in manufacturing. Classroom, hands-on, and production simulation training was provided in the program. Students had the opportunity to earn certifications in MSSC Manufacturing Processes & Production and Quality Practices & Measurement.

The program targeted recently graduated high school students and was funded through a grant awarded by Apprenticeship Carolina and the South Carolina Technical College System. Upon successful completion of the program students will be placed at Eaton Corporation through Norman Williams & Associates.

WOOLARD TECHNOLOGY CENTER RIBBON

CUTTING CEREMONY

CCTC is excited about the new state-of-the-art Woolard Technology Center (WTC) next to our Kershaw County Campus and we were honored to attend the Ribbon Cutting & Dedication Ceremony.

The Woolard Technology Center will continue to build on the foundation of Career and Technology Education started years ago. Today’s partnerships with local industry and businesses as well as with campus neighbors Kershaw County Economic Development Office, Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce, and CCTC strengthen the opportunities for WTC students including the expansions of partnership credits between Kershaw County School District and CCTC classes and dual enrollment courses.

CCTC HOLDS YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP SIGNING DAYSouth Carolina’s high school students have the unique opportunity to participate in a Youth Apprenticeship program through Central Carolina Technical College and businesses. The Youth Apprenticeship program combines high school curriculum and career and technology training with critical on-the-job training performed at a local business. Students can earn a paycheck through part-time work while earning a national credential in one of many high-demand occupations. “Youth apprenticeships are a great way for high school students to learn more about manufacturing and earn college credit through CCTC. It is vital to the industry to expose young people to the career paths available in manufacturing. CCTC is excited to launch this program and appreciate BD and SKF for providing the students with this great opportunity,” says Dean of Workforce Development & South Carolina Environmental Training Center Elizabeth Williams.

Five students from Sumter and Manning counties will participate in a Youth Apprenticeship program with CCTC alongside BD and SKF in Sumter. Cameron Weston, Tripp Hudson, Cole Bentley and Marlon Carter will finish their high school diploma, earn college credits in the Mechatronics Fundamentals Certificate program at CCTC while also working part time at BD. Shawn Tucker will finish his high school diploma, earn college credits in the Basic Machining and CNC Fundamentals Certificate program at CCTC while working part time at SKF.

Those partnering with CCTC through this program are Sumter Economic Development, TheLINK Economic Development Alliance, Apprenticeship Carolina, Sumter County School District, Clarendon County School District 2, BD and SKF.

Central Carolina Technical College has recently established two new lactation rooms for students, faculty and staff on Main Campus in Sumter. CCTC Biology Instructor Tanya Quiroz helped launch this upgrade for the college after one of her students needed a place to pump breastmilk on campus. After finding out that there was not a designated area for nursing moms to pump, the student was discouraged and considered withdrawing for the semester so that she could continue to breast-feed. Quiroz realized that this was an issue the college needed to address, not just for students who are breastfeeding, but for faculty and staff as well. Quiroz coordinated with several personnel at the college to open two lactation rooms.

“Studies show that breastmilk provides numerous benefits to both the infant and mother. Breastmilk

contains antibodies from the mother that help the infant fight viruses and bacteria. It lowers the baby’s risk of having asthma or allergies. Plus, babies who are breast-fed for the first six months, have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses and GI problems. A student should not have to choose between breastfeeding their infant or going to school. Lactation rooms for students and staff give women the ease and option to continue breastfeeding their child while pursuing their education or career,” says Quiroz.

The lactation rooms on the college’s Main Campus are located in building M400, room M434 and building M600, room M609. For students looking for any additional resources, contact CCTC’s Title IX Coordinator Kenya Dennis at [email protected].

Central Carolina Technical College’s Certificate in Massage Therapy prepares graduates for work in direct client care settings that introduces students to medical, deep-tissue, neuromuscular, sports massage and spa modalities. Students’ clinical experiences are affiliated with McLeod Regional Medical Center inpatient and outpatient cancer treatment centers, Clarendon Health System, Prisma Health Tuomey and National HealthCare Corporation of Sumter. Students employ massage therapy skills in medical-surgical, pediatrics, telemetry, oncology, hematology, women’s health, neonatal, sub-acute rehab, post-acute rehab and senior/geriatric long-term care units.

Ariel Hall is an alumna of CCTC’s massage therapy program. She graduated from the program in 2015 and now co-owns Spa 8:28 in Sumter with her best friend Stephanie Roupe. Before opening her own spa, she worked at another spa in Sumter for several years right after graduating from CCTC. “We always wanted to open up our own spa eventually. We never imagined that it would happen this quickly, but the opportunity presented itself and we just knew we had to do it,” says Ariel. “My time at Central Carolina was amazing. The teachers were so helpful and definitely prepared us for the workforce because of how hands-on the classroom environment and clinicals were. I chose massage therapy because I like to care for people. The first time that someone told me that I helped them, I was hooked and I knew that I was helping to make a difference in someone’s life. When we were in the hospitals for clinicals we worked with cancer patients to help ease their pain and I could tell that they were so grateful for

us to be there - it just reiterated why I love doing what I do.”

The massage therapy program at the college is an entry-level program for students interested in becoming a massage therapist or for health care providers wishing to expand their range of clinical skills and knowledge. Upon completion of the massage therapy certificate, students are eligible to apply to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx). Central Carolina Technical College massage therapy graduates have had a 100 percent pass rate on this national exam for the last seven years. Employment opportunities may be found in health care facilities, rehabilitation centers, medical offices, nursing homes, spas, health and sport clubs, hotels/resorts, cruise ships and private practice. “I feel very fortunate to be a part of what I consider one of the best massage therapy programs and colleges in the nation. I look at those who have graduated from this program and I am reminded of why I teach. I enjoy seeing the many accomplishments of all my previous students,” says CCTC Academic Program Manager for Massage Therapy Brent Jackson. Central Carolina Technical College credits its on-going growth and relevance to its partnerships with area industries and schools.

In 2017, CCTC introduced the WORKFIRST program, a CCTC Career Initiative that was available to all students in the college’s service area. It integrated academic and career interests with paid, career-related work experience. The WORKFIRST program allowed students to attend class and work toward a certificate in Basic Machining and CNC Fundamentals while being paid to work within that same career field. This gave students the opportunity to gain valuable job experience related to their area of study, learn time management skills and avoid accruing debt.

Yadira Viera took part in the WORKFIRST program. She graduated from CCTC in May 2019 with an associate degree in Applied General Technology, a Basic Machining and CNC Fundamentals Certificate and an Advanced CNC Programming Certificate. During her time in the program, she maintained a 4.0 grade-point average. She was hired as an intern by Mancor Industries in Lugoff, South Carolina as a WORKFIRST employee and after 12 months, was hired as a full-time employee. In January 2019, she was hired as the first female machinist at BD in Sumter. “It’s been great working at BD, and I am proud to know that I am the first female machinist at BD Sumter,” says Yadira. “I can say with confidence that I can do everything a man can in this role, and the team here has been very supportive.” (credit: Angela Lapré, Sr. Manager, Communications & Change Management, Preanalytical Systems, BD)
