A visit to Brightwater Park

The sun is shining and it’s time to play! Use this month’s poster to explore holiday activities and pastimes

Using the posterAsk the children to look closely at the picture thinking carefully about why you may have chosen to show it to them. What activities can they see? Is anybody doing anything that they enjoy doing, have never done before or hope to make time for during the summer holidays?

Talking points ● Can we see anybody doing something that we do every day? Are there activities that we only do at weekends or during the holidays?● With their talking partner, ask the children to discuss their favourite activity shown on the poster. Encourage them to explain what it is they like about the activity and how it makes them feel.● Find out the most popular activity the children can see. Discuss ways to record this.● Talk about what it means to feel bored. What can we do to avoid this? Why do we sometimes get bored? ● Focus on the child reading in the park. What books might the children recommend to this child to read over the holidays? Encourage the children to explain their choices. ● Make a list of fun activities that the children like to do. Which ideas need a friend or a group? Which pastimes are better to enjoy alone? What games are fun in pairs?● How many of the children’s favourite activities are shown on the poster? Can anybody see anything they wouldn’t enjoy doing? Can they say why?● Talk about journeys. What is the best and worst thing about going on a journey? How many different ways of travelling can the children think of? What would be the most fun way of reaching a destination?● Think about the lives of the people illustrated. Do the children think they have brothers and sisters? Can we see any families? Are there any older people in the picture? What are they doing? Is it fun to be with grandparents sometimes? Why? What do we enjoy doing with them? Does having a brother or sister make holidays more fun or more tiresome?

Do we sometimes like to be on our own and if so why? ● Are there any children enjoying pastimes that our mums and dads, or grandparents might have enjoyed when they were young? What activities can be enjoyed no matter what your age?● Discuss the weather in the poster. Does the weather make a difference to the types of things we can do? When is it important for the weather to be fi ne? What might we do when the weather is bad? ● Is there a park or play area that the children like to use? If so, what do the children think about it? How might it be changed/improved? What would they put in their ideal park/playground?● Talk about the summer holidays. Who thinks they are too long? Too short? Who is going away on holiday? Where are children going? Use data handling to record destinations or other options, such as staying with friends, going abroad, camping, visiting relatives and so on. ● What’s the best thing about going on holiday? Packing a suitcase? Arriving? Finding your new room? Eating at different places? Having access to a swimming pool? Make a list of ideas.● What important things do we need to remember when going away? Has anybody ever forgotten something and been sad because of it? Use circle time to develop this.● Think about the things we’ll miss when we’re not at school. How will it feel when the holidays are over? What can we do to keep our holiday memories? Would it be a good idea or a bad idea if the holidays went on forever? A

Holiday fun can be free! You don’t have to spend a fortune to have fun. Discover some fun

activities that your class can do without breaking into the piggy bank

There are lots of people in the poster who are doing things that don’t cost a penny. How many activities can the class think of that they can do for free? Here are some ideas…

Treasure map Children can make a map of a real location such as their home or garden and decide on a spot to hide their treasure. They can then challenge a friend or parent to use the map to fi nd their treasure.

Bookworms Remind the children it is possible to ‘read for free’ by joining their local library. The summer holidays are an ideal opportunity to make the most of local libraries. (See pages 8–9 for details of The Summer Reading Challenge™.)

Secret den These don’t always have to be outdoors. With some imagination, a table, chairs and some blankets/rugs can make a snug hideaway. What other locations can the children think of for their den? Remind them to check with grown ups fi rst!

Speed ramp A piece of wood, strong cardboard, a plastic lid – there are lots of ways to make a simple ramp. Children can use it to roll toy cars and marbles down. What happens if the ramp is made steeper? How can they measure what travels furthest?

Soapy suds There are a surprising number of things that you can do with a bowl of soapy water. Children can use it to wash doll clothes, plastic toys or tea sets; see what kinds of objects fl oat or sink; make a paper boat or wooden raft; explore colours and shapes in the bubbles. If the suds are thick enough, a range of objects can be dropped into the bowl for a fun ‘feely’ game – where you have to fi nd and guess the objects just using the sense of touch.

Minibeast world Collect twigs, petals, leaves, stones and soil to create an environment for some insects. These can be created in a shoebox, or in a plastic bottle (an adult will need to cut the top off). Remind children that afterwards, they should return any insects to the places that they were found.

Magic perfumes Stir petals and leaves into a bowl of water. Can the children create a pleasant smell from their choice of ingredients? Which petals are the most/least perfumed? Remind children that they should not drink their creations and that they should wash their hands afterwards.

Junk sculpture It is amazing just how much we throw away each week. Encourage children to start their own junk collection of boxes, cartons and other left-over packaging. They can then use these to create their own fun sculptures – perhaps a robot, a doll’s house, spaceship or farmyard. Once they start collecting, children will have lots of imaginative ideas!
