When this column comes out, the Christmas and New Year’s holidays will be behind us. What a difference two months can make! In October when

Mrs. Ringgenberg was preparing her column, we had plenty of white stuff sit-ting around and even had a “snow day.” Though we had a recent bout of winter weather, the grounds outside still remain mostly brown for the most part.

Katelynn Westphal was crowned Leola Snow Queen during the contest.

Achen and Sumption will represent Fred-erick Area at the State Snow Queen pageants in Aberdeen. The Junior Snow Pageant was Jan. 2, and the Snow Queen pageant will take place Jan. 9. Both events will be at the Civic Arena.

Sumption and Achen are both excited to meet all the queens at state and have a good experience. They give a big thank you to all who supported them and hope to represent Frederick well at state.

They can hopefully look forward to a summer representing Frederick at various parades and events.

The virus continues to be a major concern for all, and we are continuing to monitor things closely here at school. Compared to other districts we had been fortunate. Through November, we had three positive cases within our student body. We had also been fortunate with our certified staff, as not one general classroom teacher had tested positive. Our luck changed a bit during the last week of school, as we had a few more positive cases within the student body. The Christmas break couldn’t have come at a better time for us, as we somewhat limped to the finish line. Hopefully the break for everyone can allow us to come back in January for the start of the second semester fresh again.

Recently the Centers for Disease Con-trol modified their recommendations per-taining to close contacts, and the Frederick Area School District has also changed the way students who are considered close con-tacts are treated. If a student is deemed to be a close contact, they are not able to re-turn to school for five days. On day six, they may return to school provided they wear a mask when social distancing isn’t possible. The mask is to be worn for five days, and on day 11, they may return as normal without a mask. If a student wishes not to wear a mask in school, they would be able to take a rapid test with Mrs. Ringgenberg on day 6 upon returning, and if the test is negative, the student may remain in school without a mask. Parents choosing this option for their child would need to have the required paperwork signed and on file in the school office. Lastly, parents also have the choice of keeping their child home for the entire recommended 10-day quarantine.

Boys and girls basketball seasons be-gan all across the state. The girls began on Monday, Nov. 30, and the boys on Mon-day, Dec. 7. Brock Pashen and Trevor Van Tilburg return to coach the boys, while the same goes for myself and Sarah Sumption with the girls. There are a total of 18 boys participating, with eight from Frederick and ten from Leola. There are a total of 13 girls participating, with eight from Fred-erick and five from Leola.

We played our first doubleheader of the season in Langford on Saturday, Dec. 12, but due to Covid issues the final four con-tests of basketball before Christmas break were all postponed and rescheduled. The SDHSAA site contains updated schedule information for both programs, and the up-coming weekly schedules will be posted to the Frederick Area School’s Facebook page when we resume activities after Christmas.

The athletes in grades nine through twelve who participated in football, vol-leyball, and cross country this past fall have all qualified their respective activi-ties for the Academic Achievement Team Award. To qualify, the collective average of grade-point averages by all student-ath-letes involved in the varsity sport must be at or above a 3.0. The football team, vol-leyball team, and both boys and girls cross country teams were well above that mark.

The first semester came to an end on Thursday, Dec. 17, for the Christmas break. Students will return to school from Christmas break on Monday, Jan. 4. As sec-ond semester begins, so too does another semester of dual credit opportunities, and a half a dozen or so of our students are tak-ing advantage of getting an early start on their post-secondary educations. Students taking dual credit coursework receive the credit on their high school transcripts, as well as on their college transcript. The Board of Regents sets forth requirements that students must meet before they are able to enroll. If students qualify and take advantage of the opportunity, they can save hundreds of dollars, as the cost for them to take the courses now are a frac-tion of the cost that they would pay once they have graduated from high school and are enrolled in college.

We had a little taste of winter back in October and undoubtedly there will be more to come before it is all said and done. 2020 was quite the year, and I think most are happy to bid it good riddance and leave it in the rear-view mirror! Hopefully ev-eryone was able to enjoy the holiday break with friends and family. We look forward to resuming school and the activities that come with it, and here’s to hoping for a wonderful spring semester!

    Fifth-graders go through D.A.R.E.

    By Darin McGauGhFASD Journalism

The D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Ed-ucation) program helps students understand the dangers of drugs and alcohol in their communities. This program builds aware-ness and character while helping kids be-come leaders by protecting themselves from substance use. Other topics include how to be role models in their school by saying no to drugs and alcohol.

D.A.R.E is important so young kids learn the risks of drugs early in life. The 5th grad-ers learn how to fight the temptations of drugs and alcohol, the repercussions of substance abuse, and the toll it can take on their bod-ies. They also reinforce the importance of law enforcement in our communities and not be-ing afraid to talk to their parents or adults in their lives about drugs and alcohol. It teaches students how to make good decisions in a va-riety of situations. The students can form a bond with a police officer and build the idea that not all law enforcement officers are bad. D.A.R.E. is helpful on my different levels and is important in educating students to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

See how much the fund has grown!

Let’s meet the challenge of 2021The North Brown Community

Foundation finished 2020 with some promising growth despite what could have been a difficult year for the fund: $8,114 in donations were received.

That brings us to less than $19,000 from the challenge goal we aim to meet by this coming June. If we’re able to raise $150,000 in three years (from June 2018 to June 2021), the South Da-kota Community Foundation will add $37,500 to the fund. That’s some good motivation to kick our fundraising into gear for the next six months!

Some donors have given in memory of those who have died in the past year. Keep this in mind as a possibility to hon-or the memory of people who enjoyed the years they spent in this area and who would want to ensure that it thrives in the future. A donation to the North Brown Community Foundation gives back to our communities every year, as far into the future as you can imagine!

We also gave our first grant in 2020: $2,500 was donated to the Frederick Area School District’s playground reno-vation, which was completed this fall.

There will be more to give this year! We’ll have the exact amount soon— the amount to give in 2021 will be at least $5,000.

The grant application period is now open. Projects should benefit people in the geographic area of the Frederick Area School District, including the communities of Barnard, Elm Lake, Frederick, and Westport.

An application form can be found on the facing page or downloaded from www.fredericksd.com/nbcf. Applica-tions can be submitted to First National Bank in Frederick or emailed to [email protected]. The deadline for this round of grant-giving is Feb. 1, 2021.

Applicants must be nonprofits with 501(c)3 tax-exempt status to be eligible to receive grants. Nonprofits that are not 501(c)3s must have a 501(c)3 as a fiscal sponsor for the project.

Contact Heidi Marttila-Losure at the e-mail above or 605-290-3335 if you have questions about the grant application process. We’d like more applications this year! Please nudge the nonprofits you care about to apply.

What is the North Brown Community Foundation? The North Brown Community Foundation works like an endowment for the communi-

ties of Barnard, Elm Lake, Frederick, and Westport. Funds invested in the NBCF are invested by the South Dakota Community Foundation. The interest that the account generates is returned to the community to be distributed as grants to projects that address community needs. It’s one of nearly 80 community savings accounts of the South Dakota Community Foundation. Learn more: www.fredericksd.com/nbcf

For many of these girls it will be about learning the game.

    The girls basketball team will

be looking to improve after a difficult season last year. After taking their lumps last year with many eighth-graders seeing sig-nificant playing time, two things they did improve on is age their age and experience

This year’s basketball team will look similar to last year's as graduation took just one player. The Titans finished ninth in the region last year while putting up some good fights along the way.

Coach Kosters says that he be-lieves experience could be both a strength and weakness. At times they had two eighth-graders starting last year, and Coach Kosters has said that the fresh-men will have big roles to play in each game. He says that he has good expectations for them. This year's sophomore missed all last season due to injury so it will be nice to have her back but there is also more catching up to do. He says they all come to practice with the willingness to learn and great attitude, so this also gives him high hopes for them.

Coming off a 15-7 season, the

Titans are determined to contin-ue their streak of three consecu-tive winning seasons.

Coach Brock Pashen, entering in his sixth season as varsity head coach, is looking at a roster full of fresh faces, as his team lost four seniors that all contributed for multiple years. Two starters and two other juniors with experience are returning to the Titans. The Titans are very strong when it comes to a long reach and athletic ability, but seem to lack when it comes to experience.

The Titans have loads of po-tential in front of them. They are retuning honorable mention, all-conference player, Josh Hoff-man, and first team all-confer-ence player Isaac Sumption. The Titans started the season on the road against Langford on Dec. 12, then took a Covid-enforced break

until Jan. 2 against Potter County. The pace of games speeds up now in the new year.

“With Covid this season each game and practice will be appre-ciated even more,” said Coach Pashen. “It will be important for everyone to take advantage of each opportunity they get and always be ready. I hope for the seniors this year can be somewhat normal.”
