What You Need To Know Before You Begin College
Few people ever forget the amazing emotions associated with college. It can also be a
challenging and stressful time. Many people don't know what they should expect in college
and are therefore uncomfortable. You will see that it can help if you learn as much as you
can.
Choose electives from across the board. It will be easier to see what really grabs your
attention. Starting early will give you the most time to experience everything that you possibly
can.
Be sure to sleep well and plenty. It can be tempting, especially when living in a dorm, to stay
up all night and party and try to cram in studying, but you have got to get some good sleep.
Not getting enough rest can really have a negative impact on your whole college experience.
Take frequent breaks. Though study time is key, breaks are often just as crucial. When you
are studying, you should break for a few minutes each hour. Create a schedule that you can
stay with.
Take the time to apply for an intern position during your college stay. By following through
with an interning opportunity, you will receive real-world experience and professional
relationships. If you'd like for your internship to result in an actual job offering, make certain
that you fully apply yourself and learn everything that there is to know regarding your
particular position. Check with your advisor to learn what department handles internships at
your school.
Organize a study group. Just before a test, it's a good idea to get together with a group to
study. Other students will be able to explain the things that seem difficult to you, and teaching
others will help you remember what you need to know for the exam. When you teach
someone else something, it's cemented in your mind, too.
When you're having trouble, don't expect a miracle to save you. Seek assistance! There are
peer tutors that are more than willing to help you, and it does not cost you a penny.
Are you an athletic type interested in participating in sports during your college years?
Consider making a call to the college and speaking to the coach of the particular sport you
play. In many cases, collegiate coaches do not actually know who their incoming players are,
so let them know in advance that you want to play for them. You may even end up with an
unexpected athletic scholarship.
Go to other social events during your orientation to meet people. A lot of people find
themselves getting into their college community and not knowing anyone, and that makes a
person feel kind of out of place or lonely at first. The quicker you start meeting people, the
sooner you can fit in.
Make healthy food choices. Remember the 'freshman fifteen'? The better you eat, the better
your brain will work, too. Try and stay away from fast foods and junk foods. Although this
may see seem like a quick and affordable solution, the pounds can slowly start to creep up
on you. Also, you won't be receiving the energy that you need in order to perform at your
best in class.
