Prefilter/mesh filtercombinationThe prefilter and mesh fabricfilter remove larger dustparticles, mold, pet hair andmore. This coarse particulatematter, dirt, pollen, mildew andhair represents a major sourceof contaminants.

The prefilter/filter combination ismade of long-lasting, reusablematerial and has two importantfunctions. In addition to servingas primary filtration, it trapslarger particles before they canreach the ultrafine end-stagefilters. This prolongs filter lifeand helps the entire system todeliver maximum performance.

Neutralizing filterThe neutralizing filter uses aunique, natural means todestroy microscopiccontaminants. It contains plantmaterial that attracts andretains these molecules. Thisorganic substance disrupts theirritant properties of theseparticles, without the use ofsynthetic chemicals.

Scientific tests of theneutralizing filter wereconducted that used severalidentified contaminants. Testresults revealed that thisfiltration stage aloneneutralized more than 99% (theupper limit of the testmeasurement) of thesecontaminants within half anhour of use.

Repeated testing after onehour, two hours, three hoursand four hours, continued toshow up to 100% inactivationof the irritant particles.

Activated carbon filterActivated carbon adsorption is aclassic, simple, yet highlyeffective means of reducingcontaminants, where matteradheres to the surface of anagent. Charcoal carbon is idealfor adsorption because itsirregular shape offers a largesurface area.

Activated carbon or charcoal isnatural carbon that has beentreated with oxygen to open upmillions of tiny pores betweenthe carbon atoms. The use ofspecial manufacturingtechniques results in highlyporous carbon that has a surfacearea of up to 2,000 squaremeters per gram.

In other words, two grams ofthis material — less than ateaspoon — presents a totalsurface that is approximatelyequivalent to a football field.This absorptive capacity makesan activated carbon filter idealfor removing airborne particles.

HEPA filterThe last stage of filtration employsa HEPA filter. HEPA (highefficiency particulate air) filtersare an extremely effective airfiltering technology.

HEPA filters were first developedfor use with nuclear reactors. Theyare now used in medical operatingrooms, in high-tech industries (forexample, computer chipmanufacturing) and otherapplications where clean, pure airis critically important.

Certified HEPA filters meet a veryrigorous standard: they removeparticles as small as three-tenthsof a micrometer. (One micrometer— 1.0 µm — is one-millionth of ameter, or four one-hundred-thousandths of an inch.) Theyaccomplish this level of filtrationwith a verified 99.97% efficiency.

Moreover, due to the uniqueconstruction characteristics ofHEPA technology, particulate matterthat is smaller than 0.3 µm — toosmall for most lab instruments tomeasure — is filtered with evenhigher capture rates.

Using the diffusion principle, thePower5 Pro can intercept particlesas minute as 0.1 µm. That is asmuch as 10 times smaller than thesize of staphylococcus bacteria.

Ions are charged atoms or molecules. Negative ions produced byoxygen atoms can help provide a fresh-air feeling.

Negative-ion technology is used extensively in air filtration productsin Asia. Particularly in Japan, where scientists have long studied therelationship between negative ions in the air and human comfort.

High amounts of these ions are found in certain natural settings.They increase in forests and near waterfalls. A walk through a forestor by a mountain stream feels soothing and relaxing — the Japaneseregard this as therapy for mental stress, and they call it shinrinyoku,“forest-air breathing.”

Helps balance air conditioningThe amount of negative ions in air can be affected by severalfactors. Household air conditioners actually reduce the number ofnegative ions present. A negative-ion generator can help to correctthe imbalance.

Widely studied, widely adoptedResearch on negative ions and human relaxation is conducted byleading universities and medical institutes and by internationaltechnical societies.

Ozone is an altered form ofoxygen that the United StatesEnvironmental ProtectionAgency classifies as a toxic gas.The American Lung Associationcites thousands of scientificclinical studies that prove theharmful effect of inhaled ozoneon health.

Public health authorities andlegislators are alreadyrecognizing this danger. In 2007the state of California, acting onthe recommendation of its AirResources Board, enacted a law
