Hello everyone,
The children were really well presented and in correct
school uniform for the school photos yesterday, and some
lovely shots were taken. The mural on the tennis court
was used as the back drop again, since the weather was so
kind. The photographers have indicated that phtos will be
available for collection in 28 working days.
Congratulations to Bodhi Rowe-Bailey, pictured above,
on his recent success at the Sarina Districts. Bodhi
placeed second in High Jump, and has now been invited
to compete at the next level – Mackay Districts – on
Friday. This is a wonderful achievement, and we wish
him all the best as he competes this Friday.
The annual School Opinion Survey is now completed on
line. Your feedback is used to keep a pulse on how the
school community is relating to the school, so your say is
strongly encouraged. To date, only 9 of the 57 families in
our school have responded. Log on information was sent
home at the beginning of the term. This survey closes on
Friday 29 July – that’s this week.
A reminder regarding the Blue Mountain Campdraft.
We have fielded some enquiries – yes, access is free, and
so is the camping. The monies raised by this event will
be put towards covering our tennis court. -- Roslyn Waldron (Principal)

What We're Up To Year 3/4 have been learning about what a paragraph is, why we use them and the structure of paragraph writing. The class have watched them being written and have taken part in writing them together. Here are a couple of examples of paragraphs that have been written individually. Fletcher McFadzen: Oinker is my pet pig. She does very funny things and makes me feel better when I'm sad. When I fill up Oinker's water trough she has her drink then has a bath in it and I have to fill it up again. Sometimes Oinker farts and they're so revolting I speed home. When Oinker sees a cow, she "talks" to it. Oinker is an awesome pet. Bodhi Rowe-Bailey: South Sea Islanders were brought to Australia to work on cane farms. South Sea Islanders were persuaded to embark the ships. They were treated awfully by the Europeans. They also had to work in appalling conditions. South Sea Islanders helped Europeans start cane farms.

Food For Thought
Why We Should Talk With Kids
When we talk with our children we are teaching them how to talk, listen and interact with others. So, your child could be showing you something they’ve done, asking you a question or talking about their day – these brief chats are all chances for your child to learn.
For babies, any sound can be a way of communicating with them. Talk, sing and coo to them as much as you can. Name things around them as you talk. This is how they learn what things are called.
As they get older, kids will start to name things. They might point and say “truck”. You could reply, “Yes. It’s a red truck.” So you have let them know they are right, given them a new word and put it all in a simple sentence for them.
Toddlers and preschool-age children ask lots of questions. They are starting to explore their world and will ask you about things they don’t understand or things that worry them.
When they come to you and ask, pause what you are doing briefly, give them your attention, and listen to what they say. You can also ask them questions about what they think.
Talking to your children also sets up a relationship between parent and child. They are more likely to feel free and safe to talk to you. And this is so important as they grow up. -- Chappie Di

Technology: A journey towards iBalance
Visiting author, Mr Brad Huddleston, and Mackay Community Police Sergeant,
Nigel Dalton attended the school last Friday. This was a targeted presentation to the
school children that resulted in the children’s ability to repeat the learning that
technology is good, but ‘too much technology’ is bad for you.
The brain gets ‘tickled’ through the use of screens and it gradually builds up
resistance that requires more and more to achieve the same pleasure. This can result
in anger and lead to depression and anxiety. Alternative activities were encouraged
to balance exposure, and self regulation with parental support was recommended.
St. Nigel discussed bullying (including cyber bullying) and highlighted the impact
of words. Individual strategies were discussed, as was the fact that all of us bear the
responsibility to intervene if we see it happening. This talk was cleverly delivered
through the bubble blowing example pictured below.
