ISSUE #265
Weekly Community Newsletter
I want to start off this week by thanking all of the volunteers that helped out with the Santa Claus parade last Saturday. I have to say that it was the coldest one that we have had so far, but it warmed our hearts to see families bring their little ones out to get a glimpse of the big guy himself. I also want to thank all of the folks that braved the cold the night before, and supported our local merchants during Moonlite Madness. Many great deals were offered to the public, and I'm sure that everyone saved a swack of money on their Christmas shopping. If you still have some shopping left, I hope you will try to do it locally. The local business community supports many community efforts, and this is only possible because of your support of their businesses. And now, on to this week’s story…
What Santa Wants For Christmas Written By Al Jones
As most of you already know, it's virtually impossible for a person to be in two places at once. Such is the dilemma for Santa Claus. There are literally hundreds of thousands of children wanting to bend his ear this time of year. Therefore, Santa employs "Santa Helpers". These are people who look and sound like Santa. Bill was a young man when he started out as one of Santa's Helpers. You would never have seen him in a shopping mall or a corporate Christmas Party though. Bill helped in a specialized area. He used his helper talents for those that had no job or money to shop. He showed up in his bright red suit at homeless shelters, charity events and soup kitchens. If someone lost everything in a fire, Bill was there at Christmas time to make the kids smile. Any where that people were hurting or in need, Bill would be there. As Bill got older, the need for his attendance seemed to be greater each year. All year round he watched for deals on toys and approached business people for donations. His house would be crammed to the rafters by Christmas time, but by Christmas day… it would all be given

What Santa Wants For Christmas Continued from page 1… Written By Al Jones
away. He'd been a Santa Helper for thirty five years, and there were never any leftovers. I talked to him his final year. It was about a week after Christmas, he looked tired, but happy. I asked him how he managed to stay inspired, to continue, year after year. He must have a heck of a job to be able to afford such generosity. He motioned me closer so that he could speak without letting others know what he was about to share with me. "I'm flat broke. Don't keep any more money than I need to live on. The rest is for the kids!" I was shocked. "Do you still have to work then?" I asked. "Nope… get by on pension." He answered. "This is my job now... and it's a full time one at that." We chatted some more as I marveled at the dedication and commitment of this man. As we were about to part ways I said, "I've always wondered what Santa would want for Christmas. You're the closest thing I've met to the big guy. Someone that has worked so hard, for so many years, to help those in need, or pain, deserves more than I know of. If you could have anything in the world for Christmas... what would it be?" He smiled a sad smile as he replied "Helping others has been my Christmas present to myself all these years. It's the most important job I've ever had. But if I could have anything in the world for Christmas… I'd want my job to become obsolete. My work no longer being needed would be the greatest gift of all." Bill passed away a few years back. But I believe him to be responsible for inspiring many others to be "Santa Helpers" in their own ways. Whether it be donating to the food bank or dropping off toys at "In Hot Water" for the Secret Santa to distribute... we can all help fill the void left by Bill’s absence.

"The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say "I." And that's not because they have trained themselves not
to say "I." They don't think "I." They think "we"; they think "team." They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't side-step it, but "we" gets the credit. This is
what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done." ~Peter Drucker~
