Pastor’s Letter August 3/4 Dear Parish Family, Just this past June, I completed my first year as pastor of Sacred Hearts. It has been a wonderful experience for me and I have completely enjoyed getting to know the people and traditions of our parish. Sacred Hearts is a very unique place. In most parishes on Long Island the summer is a time of spiritual hibernation! Memorial Day marks the end of many parish programs and many parishioners seem to disappear for the summer. But in this part of our Island, summer is the most alive and exciting season. Between summer visitors and summer residents, our parish swells in both size and activity. It is especially good to see how important our Sunday Masses are to families on vacation. The opportunity to pray together in this special and beautiful place brings families closer to God and closer to one another. Summer is also a time for us to gather support for our mission and ministry throughout the year. We depend on the generosity of those who worship here regularly and those who are visitors to support our ongoing parish programs. Each summer we take up a special summer collection to enable you to support us in this way. Let me give you a couple of reasons why I am asking you to be especially generous to this collection. First, our Basilica church requires much loving care. It is not an easy building to maintain and every task requires special care to preserver the history and architecture of our church. Your contribution does so much more than help us to run a building – it helps us to preserve the history, and culture, and beauty of this building for future generations. Second, we are not only a beautiful place to visit; we are a working parish that ministers to people who come here 365 days a year. We teach the faith to our young people, we minister to the sick and homebound, and we support outreach efforts that minister to the neediest in our community and our world. Third, we have much still to accomplish. This past year we added many new ministries to our church and this year we look forward to still more. Most important for me is to build a strong and vital youth ministry program. Our young people are essential to our community and we need to minster to them. We also hope to address some projects in our church. We are in need of a better sound system and we are hoping to move toward a much needed new heating and air conditioning system for our church. I know you support these efforts and now I ask you to take a moment to consider making a summer gift to the church. How much is enough? Well, we are a very diverse community that embraces everything from people on fixed incomes to some of the wealthiest in our country. So I ask simply this: Would you consider making a gift this summer that you would consider especially generous? Thank you so much for the support and care you give to our community. Whether you are a summer friend or a regular parishioner, whether you worship regularly or only when you can, you are always welcome here! Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano Pastor

I hope you were touched as I was watching Pope Francis

clearly challenging our life's priorities.

On a local note, it is great to meet many of you! I am finding that more and more

parishioners are introducing themselves to me and sharing with me how much they

are looking forward to the upcoming school year! To give you an update, we are

busy working on the curriculum and getting the computers and website

updated. Please be patient, it is a work in progress.

The mailing containing registration forms for this year's Religious Education

program should be arriving this week. Please let me know if you did not receive

the mailing, or if you hear that someone was missed in the mailing. All are

welcome!! Contact me at [email protected] or 283-0508.

Growing Up Interfaith: Challenges,

Blessings, & Lessons for all

Allyson Zacharoff, a young Jewish woman from our community, has some interesting insights to share with us on the future of interfaith relations. Her interest is both personal and professional. She was in a Catholic / Jewish home where both parents actively practiced their faith. She is also the first Jewish woman to receive a fellowship in the study of interfaith relations at the Pontifical Institute of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome. Allyson says that her personal experience has been more blessing than challenge but has opened the door to study the very challenging reality of interfaith relations in our world.

Join us on Tuesday, August 27, at 7 pm for this most interesting program and discussion.

Ministry of Praise for Life comes to SHJM

This fall we are beginning a ministry of praise for life. A ministry of praise is made up of parishioners who agree to set aside some time each day to pray for an important cause. Here at SHJM our ministry of praise will be dedicated to the many issues that our Church calls life issues. Life issues that affect the humanity and dignity of every person but most especially those that Pope Francis speaks of as being on the margins of our society: the unborn, the very old, the poor, those in struggling families, those in prison. It is a wonderful ministry for people who are homebound and wish to use their time to pray for others but it is a wonderful ministry for any person who can devote a few minutes a day to prayer. We will be holding an enrollment for our ministry of praise members and each member will receive a prayer book to use each day. If you are interested in joining this ministry, please send your information to the parish office so we can contact you:

Annual Summer Party under the Tent—August 31

There is nothing like the first warm day of spring to turn our thoughts to the

return of summer! This year we will have something very special to look

forward to: the return of the Sacred Heart End of Summer Tent Party! I have

heard so much about this historic SHJM event and I am delighted that Pat

Corrigan and Joan Heinz have graciously offered to chair the party. This year

our party will honor Mary Steinbrecher, one of the party’s most enthusiastic supporters over many

years. Mary passed away this past fall but not before encouraging all of us to renew this event as a

way for the parish and community to come together and celebrate our wonderful parish and the joys

of summer in Southampton.

XVIII Domingo Ordinario. Año C. Ilustración © 2001 S. Erspamer. Printed from www.

Texto: Philip J. Sandstrom, STD © 2000, OCP. Derechos reservados.
