WHAT MATTERS INTRODUCES MISSION MOMENTS!

We know how much you appreciate hearing Mission Moments at synod events, so we thought we would share these in writing in between our events. After all, it is your mission support that makes these ministries possible. Together we are doing What Matters in God’s kingdom! Please visit the synod website if you are interested in learning more about these ministries. http://www.scsw-elca.org and click on “Ministries and Partners.”

SCSW DIAKONIA PROGRAM: CONTINUING EDUCATION MINISTRY Did you know that the ELCA has a social statement on Education? We believe Education is so important to God’s church, that we have a

published understanding of how the church feels about our calling in education. (See the link to the social statement at the end of this mission moment.) Our Calling in Education is centered by the belief that God calls us to educate people in the Christian faith for their vocation and to seek with others to ensure that all have access to high-quality education. We are to seek access for all as service to the common good that makes possible development of personal gifts and abilities. This calling is rooted in a Lutheran heritage that values education for all people in both church and society. The second section of the statement, centered on Jesus Christ, reminds us that we are educated to serve the neighbor, not as a matter of personal salvation or for our own personal advancement. It also reminds us that we follow a savior who was a teacher. These values are reflected in the work of the synod’s Diakonia program. The Diakonia team is comprised of: Rev. Steve Kottke, synod staff; Deacon Vicki Hanrahan, synod staff; Barb Zimmerman, Coordinator, Linda Wullf, Registrar and site coordinators and Diakonia graduates, Janean Hill, and Ken Harris. (Rev. Kalen Barkholz served as an integral member of this team for the first few years). Diakonia instructors have included for example: Rev. Brad Pohlman, Rev. Joanne Fabie, Rev. Dick Inglett, Rev. Peter Heide, Rev. Bob Fisher, Rev. Kalen Barkholtz, Rev. Dan Feaster. All of these instructors would be happy to talk to pastors who are considering teaching about their Diakonia experience.

Here’s what the team has been up to as shared by Diakonia Coordinator, Barb Zimmerman. (Pictured center) “Diakonia is based on Ephesians 4:12, Equipping the Saints for Diakonia; building up the body of Christ…in other words, to prepare the lay people of the congregation to share the good news of the Gospel. Diakonia is a two-year program. Diakonia graduation does

not lead to becoming rostered; however, it does help some discern where their heart and the Holy Spirit may be leading them.

One graduate found out she liked to do visitations and has become active in Hospice. One of the students, before completing the courses, went to seminary. He found the confidence that he could do the work. Another person this last year will be entering Luther College this year, and all of the graduates shown here have led worship, preached and some are now serving on the Diakonia team. I know there are pastors within the synod who have taken Diakonia and then went on to seminary.

Some history of Diakonia. Diakonia started in New York 41 years ago. Slowly it has spread across synods. In 2010, I was seeking lay learning besides Bible Studies in my own congregation. Our synod did not have a lay school offering but the Greater Milwaukee Synod had Diakonia. I chose to go to Oconomowoc for the next

two school years and graduate from Diakonia. When I graduated from the program in 2012, I had no idea where it might lead me. I was just satisfied with the knowledge I gained and the friendships I had made. In March of 2015, I approached the bishop at the time, Rev. Mary Froiland, asking why we could not have Diakonia here instead of having people go to Oconomowoc for it. At synod assembly we had an informational booth regarding Diakonia. In September 2015 we started our first classes. By June 2018 we have graduated four people. The classes are held at Trinity Lutheran church in Madison. I am happy to say that there has been enough interest generated to have three sites this

year:

* Trinity-Madison, (Saturday mornings)

* St. John’s-Evansville (Saturday mornings)

* First English-Platteville (Thursday evenings)

At present time we are doing a telephone blitz contacting all congregations within the synod. This means that we as a committee are diligently trying to find 18 instructors who are willing to teach either in Platteville on Thursday night or Evansville on Saturday morning or Madison Saturday morning. We are also seeking students for these three areas. The classes will start the week after Labor Day. We break for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, LEAD, Easter, Synod Assembly and Memorial Day.

You do not have to take all the courses, though it is prayerfully recommended. Do what fits your schedule. All sites are handicap accessible.

More information, along with registration form, can be obtained from the web site www.scsw-elca.org click on Ministries and Partners, Diakonia. You can also contact me, Barb Zimmerman at 608-535-0264 (leave a message) or by e-mail at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from prospective students and instructors!

St. Stephen’s (Monona) Invites You to Screening of Documentary, “53206-Milwaukee” St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church 5700 Pheasant Hill Road, Monona Friday, August 3 Time: 6:30 - 8:45 PM The United States has the most prisoners of any nation in the world both in raw numbers and by percentage of the population. These numbers are further compounded within Milwaukee’s mostly African-American 53206 ZIP code, where 62% of adult men have spent time in

prison, making it the most incarcerated ZIP code in the nation. MILWAUKEE 53206 chronicles the lives of those affected by incarceration. Through the intimate stories of three 53206 residents, we witness the high toll mass incarceration takes on individuals and families that make up the community. The film not only examines Milwaukee’s ZIP code 53206, but also illuminates the story of people from across the United States who live with the daily affects of mass incarceration. This documentary comes highly recommended by your synod’s Racial Equity Ministry Team.

Bishop Viviane Thomas Breitfeld Will Be the First African Descent Bishop in the ELCA to be Installed As Bishop on August 18, 2018 Marking a new historic season in the ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, The Rev. Viviane E. Thomas-Breitfeld will be the first African descent bishop to be installed in the ELCA and the second female bishop of the South-

Central Synod of Wisconsin, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (“ELCA”). The ELCA is the largest Lutheran denomination in the world. This historic event will take place on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at First Lutheran Church, 612 North Randall Avenue, Janesville at 2:00 pm. Doors open at 1:00 pm. A reception will follow. Expected are over 1,000 in attendance including, pastors, deacons and members of 142 ELCA worshipping communities in the synod, former synod bishops, bishops from the other 64 ELCA synods, ministry partners, family members and friends. In addition to members of synod congregations, Lutheran, ecumenical and interfaith partners will be present. Among the invited guests are ELCA Presiding Bishop, Elizabeth A. Eaton, ELCA, who will preside, the Rev. Mary Froiland, recent former bishop of the synod, a representative of the Lutheran World Federation, clergy from other denominations in full communion relationship with the ELCA, local dignitaries and community leaders. Guests will celebrate under the theme of social justice based on scripture text found in Micah 6:8--To do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. Preaching the gospel message will be the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, Elizabeth A. Eaton. Special music by gifted musicians led by Music Director of First Lutheran Church, Ben Johnston-Urey will fill the gathering space with a joyful sound. Bringing a rich history in community involvement while serving in congregations and on several synodical and churchwide teams, Bishop Thomas-Breitfeld envisions a synod that is a model for welcoming all to God’s table. “I hope I can help the synod become more open to change, so we can become more relevant to all, especially people of color, LGBTQI, and young adults, many of whom are choosing to not attend church.” Bishop Thomas-Breitfeld is looking forward to the celebration of installation and especially spending time with pastors, deacons and lay members of the synod that she will lead in the years to come. “There is a love in the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin that is pretty special and a sense of support that is really pretty awesome. When I was introduced last year at the synod assembly, no less than 20 other clergy came up to me to welcome me. That’s pretty spectacular. That doesn’t happen in most places.” The Rev. Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld, Beloit, Wis., was elected May 6 to serve a six-year term as bishop of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin, ELCA. The election was held during the Synod Assembly May 5-6 at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. She assumed office July 1 and succeeds the Rev. Mary Froiland who served as bishop from September 2013 through June 30, 2018. Prior to becoming bishop, Thomas-Breitfeld most recently served as an intentional interim pastor for Atonement Lutheran Church in Beloit and has also served as pastor of several congregations in Wisconsin including Gethsemane Lutheran Church (Brookfield), Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (Waukesha), and Cross Lutheran Church (Milwaukee) She currently serves as the co-chair of the Task Force on Women and Justice, ELCA; the Executive board of the Women of the ELCA; and the South-Central Synod of WI Racial Equity Team. She served for six years on the board of Trustees (Governance Com) of the Mission Investment Fund as well as the ELCA Representative to the Illinois Synod Candidacy Team. She has served communities through her work on the Ethics Committee of the Community Memorial Hospital in Menomonee Falls, the Campus Ministry Board (Milwaukee), the City of Brookfield Police Department as a volunteer chaplain, Resident Chaplain at St. Luke’s Hospital in Milwaukee and served as a board member of both the YWCA and United Way in Waukesha county. Bishop Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld is married to the Rev. Fred Thomas-Breitfeld, pastor of Jackson Park Lutheran Church, Milwaukee. They have two adult children, Leota and Sean, two son-in laws, and three

“If you have never attended a holy event of this nature, you will never forget it. We will gather as a large community of saints to offer up prayer and thanksgiving and to contemplate the work that God has set before us. Moments of music and singing will vary from celebratory rhythms that raise the roof to quieter, more contemplative meditation on the word. If you are longing for Jesus, you will be filled with the Holy Spirit. I am certain of it!” ~Deacon Vicki Hanrahan
