Lesson 5: African Art à What materials do artists today use to make their art?
à WHY do people produce art today?
à Africans did not produce art to look at, sell or go into a museum
à artists did not sign their work A. Purpose 1. religious/spiritual-represent gods or
ancestors 2. medicinal (health)- to heal, protect from
sickness 3. political- honor leaders, represent clan
4. represent an idea- wisdom, health, beauty, protection, power
5. practical- baskets, pottery, cloth…
B. Forms of African Art 1. Statuetes (small statues) -because all art was “used” most was small
enough to hold
2. Masks -honor ancestors, scare away evil 3. Weaving and Basketry 4. Pottery

C. Mediums (materials used) 1. Natural Resources:
-gold, granite, wood, shells, copper, ivory, fiber, bone 2. Items they received from trade: -glass beads, mirror
D. Elements of African Art 1. Symmetry : -
represented balance in life
2. Shine: (depended on medium)
-believed to ward off evil
-represent social status (the shinier = the richer)

features look larger to bring attention to its importance
4. Oval Eyes -some almost seem closed -represents wisdom
Textiles���
Many African societies were also famous for the cloth they wove. The most famous of these
cloths is called kente (ken-TAY). Kente is a hand-woven, brightly colored fabric. The cloth
was woven in narrow strips that were then sewn together. Kings and queens in West Africa
wore garments made of kente for special occasions.
