FULL SPEED AHEAD INTO THE NEW ERA OF MOBILITY

Introduction

Dear Reader,

Ride to work and back home again. Every day, five days a week. This is a large portion of your life that can pass by uneventfully – standing (in traffic, on the train, on the tram), searching (for a parking spot or a seat) or waiting.

But you can also opt out of the grind of commuting, hop on a Stromer and: Take off! Hit the gas! Have fun! Along the entire distance you travel! Every single day!

We use Swiss perfectionism to develop and market e-bikes that will transport you to a new era of mobility as soon as you step on the pedals. Why? Because we be-lieve that commuting is not a necessary evil, but rather can be redefined as «quality time». And an e-bike from Stromer will help you to rediscover what quality in mo-bility can mean.

There is the unbelievable boost that allows you to surge forward powerfully. Or the extremely smooth, dynamic cruising. And the battery, which will never leave you in the lurch. Or the design and the abundant technical fi-nesse that make your daily commute a unique experi-ence.

What does the Stromer e-bike do for you, other than the incomparable riding fun? More movement. More free-dom. More flexibility. Less sweat. The amazing feeling of cruising past the sea of stationary cars. And all this with no emissions and no noise.

You ask yourself what leads to the incompara-ble feeling of this ride? We will be glad to tell you on the following pages. But even better would be to schedule a test ride with your Stromer dealer right

away, which would render any further discussion unnec-essary. We promise!

So, let’s roll. Have a great time!

Highlights

WHAT MAKES THE E-BIKES FROM STROMER SO SPECIAL.

Power, design, range and connectivity: We were particularly ambitious when approach-ing these four aspects because what we want to create for you hinges on them: an incomparable e-bike experience. Each of our three models exhibits the results of our work. And here they are:

THE POWERA power pack in the rear wheel. It goes without saying that our two motors are impres-sive pieces with torques of 35 and 40 Nm, respectively. We co-developed, tested and optimized them in Switzer-land. But the best thing about them: they are housed in the rear hub. On its own that might not be enough to knock your socks off. But once you have finally ex-perienced this unique boost yourself you won’t be able to hold back your triumphant grin. The rear-wheel drive packs a punch. And here’s why:

• Direct power delivery and acceleration at the rear hub without detours – you have a more powerful, dynamic and smooth ride (you can set your desired riding dy-namic yourself using the OMNI connect app)

• No interruption of assistance when shifting – you ac-celerate steplessly from 0 to 45 km/h

• No excessive wear of sprockets, chain and crank – your service costs are lower

• Ideal weight distribution between rider, battery and motor – you travel more safely and with more stability

• Recuperation of the braking energy – you extend the battery range by up to 20 percent

• Decoupling of the pedal and motor support – your ca-dence is independent of the motor

THE DESIGNAll of a piece.Stromer e-bikes have an impressive appearance with a fastidiously tidy design. Nothing is hanging off of any-thing, nothing protrudes. Nothing just happens to be designed the way that it is. Professionals refer to this as «integrated design». Concrete examples of this include:

• Uniform design of all elements – from the frame to the fenders, from the battery to the touchscreen

• Motor integrated into the rear hub• Handy batteries with a simple design in fresh colors,

integrated into the downtube• Hidden cable routing inside the frame

THE RANGE It lasts. Up to 180 kilometers. As we like to say, our batteries last: quite far. Probably farther than you want to ride at one time, namely up to 180 kilometers. When the battery is empty, you can sim-ply charge it at any ordinary power socket. You can either use the charging socket on the frame or you can remove the battery and connect to the socket via the charger.

THE CONNECTIVITY Reliably networked. Our e-bikes get along splendidly with their owners thanks to Stromer OMNI connect. OMNI connect is the name of our app and the cloud-based platform with which you have a direct and reliable line to your e-bike. Always. Everywhere. No matter how far apart you are. All this and more can be easily controlled, queried and set on your smartphone thanks to OMNI connect:

• Anti-theft protection with locking/unlocking • Localization via GPS • Overview of kilometers traveled• Configuration options for the motor

You want to know exactly what Stromer connectivity is all about? Check out the next page for the details.

HOW TO CONFIDENTLY ESCAPE FROM THE FLOCK OF COMMUTERS

Just pass right by the trafficHave you had enough of being forced to hit the brakes by the car in front of you a dozen times on the way to work? Then we recommend: Climb on an ST2, pass right by the sea of commuters and chalk up the first success of your workday in passing. This will get you into the office, through the day and past the traffic home in the best of moods.

You don’t want to be sweaty when you arrive at the office? You won’t be. Even if you can’t ride 500 meters without hitting a hill. (We know what we’re talking about here, we’re Swiss.) If it gets to be too much, just press a but-ton three times and the motor takes over the hard work with full power. And you should naturally also choose the highest assistance level whenever you are looking for maximum speed and fun.

And what happens when the motor runs out of energy? On the ST2 you can choose between a battery that lasts up to 150 km and one that lasts up to 180 kilometers. Is that enough for you? You can either charge the battery in the frame or you can remove it from the frame, either at home or at work.

Full power – from the first push of the pedals The SYNO drive engine, developed in Switzerland, is in-stalled in the ST2 S – a power pack with 500 watts of power and a torque of 40 Nm. What does this additional power feel like when starting off? Like taking off in an airplane; you can feel the tremendous boost from the first push of the pedals, and further pedaling catapults you into this sense of elation that only the ST2 S can trig-ger. You won’t want to ever get back off. And you won’t need to for a good while – the battery is sufficient for up to 180 kilometers.

The finest caliber componentsWe naturally went all out on all the other components of the ST2 S as well and only allowed the best technology to be used. Like the electronic shifting system, for ex-ample. Or the four-piston brake system that we adopted from racing and optimized for the ST2 S. You thus have the best possible control over your racing machine even when driving fast. What else? Oh yeah: A light carbon fork and CAN bus communication, meaning the efficient networking of touchscreen, battery, motor control and light system.

Not to be missed: the headlight When it comes to components, the ST2 S outshines many competitors. Especially in terms of the light sys-tem: With 1,600 lumens, the LED matrix headlamp from Supernova has the brilliance of an automotive light sys-tem, and with its low and high-beam it also has its safety and versatility. The brilliant light system is also equipped with sensors so you don’t need to worry about switching it on or off. It takes care of this automatically with the utmost economy and safety, as the light beam adapts to the light conditions. During the day, the Stromer day-time running light provides extra safety. You’ll be radi-ating enthusiasm.

Open for good business ideas

Are you an entrepreneur, have an innovative mobility project in the

works and think that this could really take off with Stromer e-bikes?

Get in touch with us. We have an open ear for good concepts – and

if you convince us, we will be happy to develop customer-specific

software settings.

Stromer OMNI connect – your connection to your e-bikeOur e-bikes contain all sorts of clever technology equipped with sensors, such as the rear-wheel motor or the battery. These communicate clearly with one another and en-sure the particularly dynamic Stromer riding experience. But they naturally also com-municate with the fancy little on-board computer in the toptube of the Stromer e-bike. Battery status, speed, kilometers traveled, current location – the computer collects all this data, assesses it and provides it to you when you query it. We developed Stromer OMNI connect specifically for your communication with your e-bike. You can use OMNI connect directly on the touchscreen of your Stromer or via the OMNI app on your smartphone. And thus, you are always connected.

OMNI connect makes your daily Stromer experience even safer and more comfortable:

Locking and unlocking at a touch You can lock and unlock your Stromer as follows: Open the OMNI app on your smartphone or the PIN-secured OMNI interface on the on-board computer. Then touch «Lock» to close and enter the respective PIN to open. Done.

Clever anti-theft protectionAs helpful as Stromer e-bikes are with their owners, they are equally as unhelpful when thieves are present. They act as follows: If you have locked your Stromer and it is moved by strangers in this mode, it blocks the motor, be-gins to flash the lights and sends you an SMS or an e-mail. The motor can only be unblocked with your PIN or via the OMNI app.

Localization via GPSYour Stromer also naturally informs you of its current loca-tion, including where thieves have carried it off to. Wheth-er in the neighboring village, the neighboring country or the other side of the world, you are able to find your stolen Stromer again. Thanks to GPS. And if the e-bike has been damaged, the app will also show you where the nearest Stromer dealer can be found.

Individual settingsYou want lower motor output proportional to the pedal-ing force? Or motor support when braking? Sure thing. Stromers are flexible. Using OMNI connect, you can not only select the support mode but also set the second mode entirely as you choose. A Stromer thereby becomes completely yours.

Facts and successesWhat is happening with the battery charge level? OMNI connect keeps you updated, of course. And if you’re inter-ested in performance statistics: wonderful! OMNI connect presents all the highs and lows in meticulous statistics: How many kilometers you traveled on your tour. How many in total. How many last month. The performance history. Over the week, the month, the year. And, and, and. Have fun!

Remote services and updatesBattery charge level, battery temperature, motor tempera-ture – with the OMNI app you are informed at all times in all locations about the current status of your Stromer. As is your specialist dealer, which is how they are able to perform remote maintenance. And as new OMNI func-tions are available for your Stromer, you automatically receive a software update. And everything is performed «over the air».

WHY YOU AND YOUR STROMER WILL BE INSEPARABLE. FOR SURE.

«THE POTENTIAL FOR E-BIKES IS A LONG WAY FROM BEING EXHAUSTED»

Interview with Weert Canzler

Achieving climate reversal will require a transportation reversal – away from combustion engines and toward mobility that is based solely on renewable energy. We have less than twenty years to manage this. That is ac-cording to the mobility researcher Weert Canzler from the Berlin Social Science Center. Stromer met with him and discussed the city, the mobility and the vehicles of the future – and which role e-bikes play in this vision.

Stromer: Electric, shared economy and digitally net-worked vehicles driven by renewable energy. This is a brief summary of your vision for sustainable urban mobility. Describe a city for us that has really em-braced this vision. Weert Canzler: This city is much quieter than our current cities because there is no longer any engine noise. There are far fewer cars in the cityscape because our mobility needs are covered by fewer cars, which are shared. Many people travel on foot and there is a large contingent of bicycles and e-bikes. Some things remain the same as today, like the buses that are already electric. But there will also be new vehicles that we don’t know at all yet.

For example? We don’t exactly know yet. But these vehicles are prob-ably somewhere between a bicycle and a car. There is currently a lot of progress in this area, which we can see in cargo bikes. A few years ago this type didn’t exist, and currently there are the most varied models – two-wheeled, three-wheeled, those with transport options for children, for your shopping, for all sorts of things. A diversity is currently arising that will then be put into effect.

What role do e-bikes play in this vision? E-bikes are the ideal means of transport for mid-length to long commutes. For many people, distances of six, seven or eight kilometers are too far to go by bicycle, but they could be easily traveled with an e-bike. The e-bike is also ideal for commuters who understandably do not want to show up at work soaked with sweat. The poten-tial for e-bikes is a long way from being exhausted. On the other hand, you have the transport sector. In future the dispersion of goods, in residential areas in particular, will to a great extent be performed by cargo e-bikes.

Cities like Copenhagen are already considerably closer to your vision than German or even Swiss cities. What is different in these cities? In Copenhagen very long-term, very consistent infra-structure politics are behind this, which focus on bike

traffic but also on public transport and the combination of the two of these. This works very well. You can easily board the trains with your bicycle, for ex-ample, and don’t have to juggle it around the seats. There are fast bike paths with no intersections and bridges built only for bicy-cles, and when it snows, the bike paths are cleared first and the roads are only cleared afterwards. These details show how exten-

sively Copenhagen prefers cycling. They simply did ev-erything right.

Do you believe that changes in mobility can also be introduced with pressure from the streets, meaning from people who want a more modern mobility and also implement this in their everyday lives?Yes, this is already happening. In big cities in partic-ular there is currently a substantial growth in bicycle

traffic, even though the conditions are often poor. Also the health aspect is becoming increasingly more im-portant. People know that riding bikes is healthier than sitting in a car and also healthier than sitting on a bus. Increasing num-bers of people are chang-ing their behavior. And this then results in the self-reinforcement effect: The more cyclists or e-bik-ers you see, the more the somewhat more hesitant people feel safe or moti-vated to do the same; first in their free time and then, if they have had good experiences, in their everyday life.

90 percent of all car trips in German cities are short-er than eight kilometers. The average speed of cars in Berlin is 18 km/h. There is actually no good rea-son for city dwellers to drive a car. With a bicycle, and with an e-bike in particular, you would travel faster and with less stress. And yet, 80 percent of passenger traffic in Germany is still with one’s own car. How do you get a die-hard car driver to switch over? I would save the die-hard car drivers for last. We have to reach those car drivers who think there is no viable alternative to their car. We must get them to think – and naturally we must also create and highlight the alterna-tives.

How do we get them to start thinking? An example: If I as a car driver know that I can drive any-where and find a parking spot for free, I don’t really have cause to think about alternatives. This given parking spot supply will no longer exist in future. Public space in cities is growing ever scarcer. It is pure economic nonsense to offer this scarce space for free private park-ing. Especially when we know that private cars spend most of their time just standing around. The pressure will increase to utilize public space and charge money for parking. The more scarce and expensive the parking spots become, the more interesting the alternatives will be, which should then also already be available. A good public transport offer and easy-to-use sharing systems, for example.

What role could the e-bike, in particular the s-pedelec, play here: Could it be a particularly

attractive alternative for car drivers due to the mo-tor and the technical finesse? It could be. Our experience, however, is that e-bikes are currently purchased as a vehicle for recreation and not as an alternative to a car. But satisfied recreational e-bikers are the future everyday e-bikers. If you have had good experiences on an e-bike and at some point have to reconsider your mobility, you are far more likely to completely switch to the e-bike than someone who has never ridden an e-bike. The precondition for this, how-ever, is that these everyday e-bikers also have access to the corresponding infrastructure. Recreational riders can potentially choose particularly bike-friendly paths for their tour, whereas the paths in your everyday life are predetermined: You have to go to work, to the university, to daycare, to the supermarket. If well-disposed e-bikers do not feel safe on these trips or if the path is difficult to actually travel, the potential for a switch is wasted. The cities really have to make an effort. Good and safe bike paths, cycle highways with no intersections, good park-ing options: all of these are needed.

What is required of the infrastructure so that s-pedelec riders also get their money’s worth? Cycle highways are naturally ideal for s-pedelecs; lon-ger commutes would also be interesting for e-bikes with this development. Intercity cycle highways are already under discussion, like from Dortmund to Essen or from Duisburg to Bochum. There is also an inspection order for several cycle highways in Berlin. The legal question of whether s-pedelecs will also be allowed to use these must now be clarified. Because s-pedelecs are treated like mopeds in Germany, meaning they have to drive on the road. Only pedelecs can use the bike path. In my opinion, however, cycle highways must be built to allow different speeds, meaning also for s-pedelecs.

The philosopher Richard David Precht speaks of the end of the car as a status symbol of individual trans-port. Does the e-bike have what it takes to replace the car in this role? The new status symbol of mobility will more likely be something like the plethora of options rather than a sin-gle type of vehicle. Meaning people will no longer use their cars to show off, but instead their membership in an association of the most varied mobility providers. With this membership, you can then use many different means of transport: train, bus, tram, car, e-bike, bicycle, whatever. It is then no longer about ownership but about opportunities for access. This status symbol will then probably be expressed with an app or a membership card.

Our interview partner:Weert Canzler is a sociologist and mobility and energy expert at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) and at the Innovation Cen-ter for Mobility and Societal Change (InnoZ). His office is at the EUREF campus in Berlin, a “living lab” in which different com-panies and institutions research, test and experience visions of a sustainable city.

In Copenha-gen, first the bike paths are cleared of snow, and then the roads.

Speaking of apps: Will the smartphone be the con-trol center for future individual mobility?

Yes. In this context, we are talking about the smartphone as the mas-ter key for new mobility because everything is possible with this device, which can be configured individually. You can ob-tain information, book ve-hicles, make reservations, unlock, lock and much

more. The smartphone – or its successor technology – will enable an individualization of mobility that we have never experienced before.

What could this individualization look like? These days you have a whole selection of mobility cards in your wallet. A BahnCard for train trips, an annual sub-scription for public transport and maybe a car sharing or car rental membership. In future, you will have a bun-dled offer instead of many individual offers. You will cre-ate a mobility profile, log in, identify yourself with your driver’s license or insurance card, and then you have ac-cess to all the possible means of transport; train, tram, cars, e-bikes, cargo bikes, bicycles, footpaths – simply everything. In the door-to-door timetables these sys-tems offer, all available vehicles will be incorporated for the purposes of this trip. Various trip variants will also be shown, meaning not only the fastest but also the sportiest, for example, or the most scenic which then passes through a lot of nature. This is how we imagine the mobility of the future.

To switch from the future back into the present: How did you get to work this morning?By bicycle. I don’t live far away from here and I make all my trips within the Berlin commuter railway ring with my bicycle. This is easy to do. But I have seriously con-sidered buying a pedelec. There are increasingly more really fancy models that are not obviously e-bikes. That is important to me. I think that design is an important aspect for finally freeing pedelecs from their image as senior-citizen bikes.

The smart-phone is the master key for new mobility.
