[Beatitudes are the heart of Jesus’ moral teaching]

• Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs in the kingdom of heaven

• Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted

• Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth• Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for

righteousness, for they shall be satisfied• Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy• Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God• Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called

Sermon on the Mount

The Beatitudes are at the heart of Jesus' preaching. They take up the promises made to the chosen people since Abraham. The Beatitudes fulfill the promises by ordering them no longer merely to the possession of a territory, but to the Kingdom of heaven (CCC 1716)

The Beatitudes respond to the natural desire for happiness. This desire is of divine origin: God has placed it in the human heart in order to draw man to the One who alone can fulfill it. (CCC1718)

Parables

Lawyer = one who interprets the Law Who is my neighbor?

- Gentiles and Samaritans hated by Jews Samaritan proved to be neighbor in need

Lawyer draws line and perform lowest amount of work; surprised to hear Samaritan is the neighbor

Good Samaritan: Luke 10:25-37

Robbed man = Adam which represents entire human race

Robbers: the evil powers Stripped = lost cloak of sanctifying

grace Beat and left half dead = fallen human

nature is severely wounded Samaritan = Jesus

If we don’t show mercy to others; God won’t show mercy to us

We should continuously forgive others; “as many as seventy-seven times”

Transubstantiation = the substance of bread and wine are changed into the substance body and blood of Christ at the consecration at Mass

Accidents are things which can be perceived through the human senses.

Substances give an object its true identity and formed its relationship to the world.

Eucharist: accidents = bread and wine, it still looks and tastes the samesubstance = actual body and blood of Christ

Eucharist is composed of Christ’s Body, blood, soul, and divinity – we receive Christ’s glorified body, divine flesh, we receive a share in Christ’s divinity

Eucharistic miracle is when the accidental characteristics change as well as substantial

officially defined as a dogma in 1215 at the Fourth Lateran Council
