YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

Page 4: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

Our eyes tells our brains……

What kind

Where

How much

….about light in the world.

Page 5: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

…in the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

Our visual system detects light energy…..

Page 6: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

Our eyes are designed to focus light on our retina.

Our retina is in the back of your eye.

Page 7: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

…called rods and cones.

In our retina, we have special cells to catch the light…..

Page 8: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

Inside of the rods and cones is…

…a photopigment.

rhodopsin

Page 9: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

The photopigments help to trick us by making you “see” things that are not there!!!

Page 10: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

This is called an after-image, and it happens because your cones get “tired”.

“Tired” really means you have broken all your photopigment.

“Cone”

opsin

Page 11: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

The rods and cones send the info to the other cells in the retina.

Page 12: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

The axons from cells in your retina all gather together….

…to form the optic nerve.

Blind Spot

Page 13: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

The info is brought into our brain…

…by a nerve optic nerve – Cranial Nerve 2.

Page 14: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

The info is brought to our occipital lobe…

…after making a few stops along the way.

Page 15: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

The information is turned around….

…and put together, like a puzzle.

Where the light is

Movement of light

Your brain processes information about the light from about 100 million photoreceptors.

Lots of neurons are connected to pass the information along.

Page 17: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

All of the connections, within your visual system…

…means that processing takes time.

Page 18: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

It takes time even when you know….

…what you are looking for.

Page 19: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

There is a lot of info to put together…

…and lots of places for info to change.

Page 20: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

Where your attention is focused…..

…changes what you see.

Page 27: What is your nervous system? YOUR VISUAL SYSTEM

There are lots of connections, lots of places to change info…..

….and still we see.
