Look at your map of Southall

Maps are important in Geography. How can we use them?

We are going to identify some places we know. Maps can look messy with labels unless we keep them neat. We can do this by using a key:

• On your map create a key: ■ = My house

Page 6: What is the UK like?

How do you get there?• Add your school to your key and shade it in a

colour on your map

• Work out your route from your house to the school and colour it in you wish.

• If your house isn’t on the map choose another location (e.g train station) and draw how you would get to the school from there.

The village of Thakeham lies to the east of Pulborough. It has a church and is joined to the village of Abingworth by a secondary road. The name of Abingworth suggests that this place grew up around a farm. To the south-west of Abingworth is the site of an old Roman Road. South of this road are tumuli - burial places of the Ancient Britons.

How could we describe the village of Thakeham?

On your map of Southall, add 3 more places to your key that are important to you

• You should now have 5 places listed in your key, each with a different colour used

• These places should be identified on your map
