Selkirk’s brand promise incorporates more than just offering programs and courses. It also includes the feelings that students and others get when they interact with or attend Selkirk.

Selkirk’s brand is defined by their stakeholder’s perceptions*. All Selkirk employees play a role in communicating the integrity of the Selkirk brand. Each Selkirk employee is a brand ambassador.

Expectations of Selkirk’s brand are developed by stakeholders based on the brand promise. If expectations are not met in every interaction*, confusion may lead to searching for another brand that does meet expectations in every interaction.* The college is currently working on a Service Excellence Initiative.

Think of the Selkirk College brand as a person. From appearance to personality and everything in between, Selkirk’s brand persona is one that students and influencers will evaluate and judge before they interact/attend.

logo use formats & size standardsThe Selkirk College core logo consists of a shield and a wordmark, which should always appear together in one of the combinations outlined below. This is the college’s only logo and is intended as a visual identifier only, not as a major design element. The logo is available in two formats—horizontal and vertical.
Standard horizontal is the most versatile and legible format and is preferred for the majority of uses especially where vertical space is limited and where legibility/name prominence is needed.
Standard vertical is generally restricted to use on college stationery and reports however, on occasion, it can be used in situations where horizontal space is limited and where an insignia or badge is required.

logo use improper use
Under NO circumstances should ...
- the logo be condensed or expanded (usually holding the Shift key whilst resizing will avoid this)
- the wordmark be substituted with another typeface.
- the logo be used at too low a resolution.
- previous versions of the college logo be used such as the tab.
- special effects be applied to the logo such as drop shadow.
- the colour of the logo be changed.
- the logo be reproduced on a background that does not provide adequate contrast
- the logo be reproduced on a background that results in a clash of colours.

logo use – tagline
The Selkirk College tagline, “Within Reach. Beyond Imagination.” has two treatments as demonstrated above. It can be placed in Milo Regular Italics to the left or right of the logo, depending on where the logo is placed on the collateral. The tagline colour should be the same colour as the Selkirk College wordmark, most of time this will be PMS Cool Grey 11 and on occasion PMS 417.
The tagline also exists as a bold wordmark, this is predominantly applied to recruitment collateral and used in recruitment oriented events such as Experience Selkirk day. It is typeset in Milo Extrabold Uppercase. It is featured as an emboss on the Viewbook, Academic Calendar and college presentation folders.
Within Reach. Beyond Imagination. Cap height of tagline aligns with x-height of wordmark

Typography plays an important role in helping to create a distinct identity. Not only is the typeface (font) of importance, but also how the type is set in the leading, kerning, the case and the style. Selkirk College has two distinct typefaces: Milo and Myriad Pro.
Milo is always used in display type, headlines, taglines, oversized introductory paragraphs and pull quotes. Headlines are mixed case. Myriad Pro is used for body text and small print elements. For body text a good measure would be 9.5pt/13pt.

In substitute of Milo, Freight Sans Pro (https://typekit.com/fonts/freight-sans-pro) is always used in display type, headlines, taglines and pull quotes on Selkirk College’s website and online applications. CamingoDos Web (https://typekit.com/fonts/camingodos-web) is used for italicised oversized introductory paragraphs. In substitute of Myriad Pro, Calibri is used for all web body copy and small text elements online.
Having consistency in typography is very important. It ensures that our visual communication materials are always clear and concise and never cluttered. Good typography that is on brand helps to convey a professional image.

Shown here is the logo and typography applied to greeting cards and a presentation folder. The college colour, deep red (PMS 202), is used liberally. For special events other fonts that support the event theme can be explored but the integrity of the college logo and tagline must remain intact.

strategic documents & reports
Strategic documents and reports are assigned a visual cover treatment that can place them where they belong in the hierarchy of the document matrix. The importance of the highest level document—the strategic plan—is emphasised through the use of a full bleed cover image and large headline. Second level documents continue to use full bleed imagery and large headlines but white areas are added.
White borders are used on the more detail oriented third and fourth level reports so they can be easily printed in house.
The colour horizontal logo is applied to all reports.

colour definitions
Pantone (PMS) - Pantone swatches are “spot” colours and are used for offset printing. Offset printing will consist of CMYK (4 colour process) but can also be specific spot colours (Pantone). For accurate colour standards, refer to the current edition of the PANTONE Colour Formula Guide. PANTONE® is a registered trademark of Pantone, Inc.
CMYK - When producing full colour documents, CMYK is the standard. This is a four colour process that uses Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black (K). This applies to both offset and digital printing as well as digital colour outputs (desktop printers).
RGB - (Red/Green/Blue) is the standard for the web/screen applications. It can also be used for six colour large format printing to preserve a larger colour gamut.
Hexadecimal is also the standard for the web/screen applications.
*Please note that colour swatches are only accurate when using Pantone spot colours on a printing press. Variations in paper, coated or uncoated, and tone effect the ink color.

Brand extension logos consist of the college logo combined with a wordmark of the faculty, department, division or research unit name. The logos are intended as visual identifiers, not as major design elements. Examples of the brand extension wordmarks and colours in use can be found in the following pages.
brand extension logos
A note on extension logos: Each extension logo has a specific Pantone colour, but because of the way different printers are calibrated and the way colour will show up on different types of paper, the logos won’t always reproduce the exact same colour. The same is true of the way the colour will appear on different computer screens.

School flyers are a primary example of Selkirk College brand extension visual style. Each flyer is designed for presentation in existing Perspex display units so each header is colour-coded with the allocated school colour. The body text is set to be easy to read with sub headings used to highlight key attributes or programs. Where possible a school alumni or student quote/testimonial is used. Images are selected to build a narrative on student experience.

SPENCER, 1ST YEAR RURAL PRE-MEDICINE STUDENT, ENJOYS A PRE-CLASS PADDLE ON KOOTENAY LAKE IN NELSON, BC
JUST WHAT THE DOCTORS ORDEREDFinding Solutions to the Rural Doctor Crisis The story of the Selkirk College Rural Pre-Medicine Program is the story of why community colleges are vital to Canada’s education system. Its genesis arrived through a need to fill a critical gap with creative solutions and tangible outcomes, a model that is now playing out in the classrooms of the Castlegar Campus in British Columbia’s Southern Interior.
The three-year Rural Pre-Medicine Program launched in September with its first cohort of 17 eager students. With passionate mentors and dedicated instructors, the program aims to build a foundation of experience and knowledge students will need to prepare for entrance into medical school.
“If you come from a rural area, you are among those most likely to go back to a rural area,” says Rural Pre-Medicine Program Coordinator Elizabeth Lund. “If you want to populate the rural areas with physicians, you need to provide the proper education to students who live in rural areas and have a strong desire to get into medical school.”
The curriculum in the Rural Pre-Medicine Program weaves together courses tailored to rural medicine with courses recommended for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Extra training in skills such as mediation and conflict resolution, leadership, communication and interprofessional skills, small business training and MCAT preparation supports students’ futures as physicians and their medical school applications.
“People understand that this is something that can form one piece of a really long term solution to a big problem,” says Lund. “This is not a problem for doctors or the government, really this is a problem in our society across Canada where there is a big difference between rural and urban.”
Out of challenge comes opportunity and at Selkirk College the Rural Pre-Medicine Program is taking on the problem of a physician shortage outside urban areas by opening the door for students who desire to follow a pathway towards a career in medicine well suited for rural Canada.
Helping Solve the Problem of a Growing Need The mounting challenges with health care in rural Canada have gained traction in the media over the last few years. With shrinking government budgets, an aging population and societal shifts forming the basis of these struggles, more attention has been focussed on the gap between urban and rural.
Three years ago, Lund and her colleagues in the Selkirk College School of University Arts & Sciences were looking for ways to bolster second year sciences at the Castlegar Campus. A story on CBC radio about the doctor shortage in rural British Columbia triggered the idea for a program that would help address the need with homegrown solutions.
Lund was charged with putting together the proposal and soliciting support. For almost two years Lund put her skills in research and passion for education to the test as she approached senior levels of government, the Doctors of BC, local physicians, the University of British Columbia and anybody else that would listen.
“There was a lot of pounding the pavement… I had to become a salesperson,” says Lund, who holds a PhD in Chemistry. “That’s the last thing I thought I would ever do, but I was selling something that I totally believe in. It ceases to be selling and becomes talking to people to let them know what we want to do.”
The First Cohort a Brilliant Example of What is Possible On a sunny late-September afternoon in Castlegar, Selkirk College administration joined representatives from the Doctors of BC, the Ministry of Health and health care professionals from around the Kootenay region for a special reception to welcome the first Rural Pre-Medicine cohort to the program. With a class made up of diverse backgrounds that range from recent high school grads to single mothers who have been away from post-secondary for more than a decade, there was a buzz in the air.
“I have a vision of some of the graduates of this program not only making it into medical school, but also being really grounded and solid people,” said Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital physician Dr. Blair Stanley, chair of the program’s advisory committee. “Not only because of their rural roots, but because of some of the learnings they will have had in this unique program. They will bring that groundedness and can bring that awareness into their clinical setting when they are looking after patients. I think that will be a magical connection that they will have with patients and the work they do.”
A visit to a Friday afternoon chemistry lab is further proof that the cohort model and small classroom environment is already paying dividends. Three months into their education journey at Selkirk College, students work together with a spirit more often found with the cohesiveness of a sports team rather than the individualistic competitive pursuit of entrance into medical school.
“You can see already that the students in this program are going do something and they are going to do something great… It’s already a success,” says Lund. “I’m really proud of these students and very excited about the opportunities for them in the future. Whether they end up choosing medicine or another health field or something else completely different in science, this is where it starts.”

A mountain graphic was taken from the college crest and applied as a cutout to posters, ads, social media badges, website and other promotional collateral. This graphic speaks to our region—the Selkirk Mountains—as well as creates an additional visual identifier for the college. The preferred treatment is for the mountains to be reversed out in white, and placed as a notch in the bottom right corner of the layout. This has the added visual benefit of finishing the layout similar to the way a period ends a sentence.

A consistent typographic approach facilitates easier brand recognition and helps all college collateral to visually belong to the same family. Academic Study Areas, Departments and Schools are always featured in the footer of the layout, above the college logo, typeset in Milo Extrabold uppercase. (See below).
A white border is often used to frame full page images and block colour, this accommodates in house printing margins, allows for the mountain graphic to bleed and provides the opportunity to bleed reversed out headlines into the white where possible. Visually it adds a contemporary feel that opens up the bounds of the layout.

TOP OF THE CHARTS
Before her hit “Hideaway” topped the charts in
Europe, received millions of hits on YouTube,
garnered a MTV Music Video Award nomination,
brought her to the stages of the David Letterman
Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and sold out shows
across the world, Kiesza was a Selkirk College
Contemporary Music & Technology program
student.
“Selkirk College is one of the best places where
you can go to really discover who you are as a
musician,” she says. “To go there with an open
mind provided me with a great opportunity to
explore. When I entered Selkirk I thought I was
a folk singer, but I explored all these different
styles and it’s turned out that I’m this electronic,
diva, house musician.”
Kiesza used her Selkirk College experience as a
springboard to the Berklee College of Music in
Boston and her impressive talents have taken
the young singer onto worldwide fame. Looking
back, she credits her time spent in Nelson as a
key turning point in her career.

SCULPTOR OF ARABIAN NIGHTS
In the fall of 2013, Metal Casting Instructor Denis
Kleine was part of an international effort that
brought more than 60 sand sculptors to Kuwait
City to build a massive temporary theme park
called 1001 Arabian Nights. Representing 24
countries, the task of the world’s elite sand artists
was to create almost 80 sculptures as part of the
Remal International Sand and Light Festival.
“Working on a massive project like that was a
great opportunity,” Kleine says. “The energy of
the group was quite magical.”
When he’s not helping build the world’s biggest

A CUT ABOVE THE REST
At only 17, Selkirk College student Amber Beckjord made it clear she was a rising star in the
industry when she captured a gold medal at the BC Skills Competition in Hairdressing. Cutting
and styling against 30 of the most talented hairdressing students in the province, Beckjord
turned enough heads in Vancouver to bring home the top prize.
“It’s a lot of hard work… you can’t expect to go far in anything if you are not willing to put
the work in,” says Beckjord. “I spent hours and hours practicing for that competition; it’s the
same way with anything you do. It really helps if you are enjoying what you are doing and I
enjoy doing this.”
What makes Beckjord’s gold medal even more impressive is that she registered at Selkirk
College as an ACE-IT student. The ACE-IT program allows high school students to attend
college for credit towards their high school diploma. In the spring of 2014, Beckjord
graduated from Selkirk College two months before graduating from high school.
“I have always taken classes above my grade, so I thought it was a great opportunity,” she says.
“If I was going to do it anyways… who gets to go to college when they’re still in high school?”
Beckjord’s uncle is Anthony Crosfield, one of Canada’s most celebrated hairstylists and a Selkirk
College Hairdressing program alumni. The co-owner and creative director of Union Salon in
Vancouver, Crosfield won the Slice Network’s Superstar Hair Challenge and has established an
international reputation in the fashion industry.

photography
Photography is to be used liberally within marketing/communications materials. All photos should be of high quality (for instance, they should never be out of focus, poorly exposed or be low resolution). Images are selected to tell a story about one of Selkirk’s key brand pillars:
• focus on the learner• high quality teaching and learning environment• community engagement and innovation• a respectful, healthy and safe workplace• a responsibility toward enrolment, finance and ecology.
Professional and contemporary. Keep it real, natural and direct – not manipulated or contrived. Make it accurate and representative. Don’t mislead. Images should be high quality, uncluttered and up-to-date. A collection of images work in concert.
Student-centred. Keep it personal – a student’s view of all aspects of college life. Capture authentic moments—fresh, well-composed, technically excellent “candids.” All people photos representing campus life must use actual Selkirk College students, faculty or staff as subjects.
Portraits are accessible –“I could be them.” Portraits should be direct and honest with subjects looking at the camera. Have other people going about their business in the background, so the individual does not look isolated.
Groups of people should interact with each other. Show the college as a living, breathing place, full of life and activity. Subjects should be engaged in activity, not posed and images should include distinctive Selkirk College features to distinguish from stock shots.
People images must not have a clichéd, generic or amateur look, or be used as gratuitous “filler.” They must stand on their own. The idea is to never use a picture simply because it is the only one available of a particular person or project. If it is weak and does not represent the professionalism in our brand, we should not use it.

SERVICES TAILORED TO THE LEARNERS’ NEEDS
The pursuit of college success can be daunting for many students, but at
Selkirk College help is always within reach. Whether the issue is big or
small, Student Support Services has the experts ready to assist in turning
challenges into opportunities.
One of the branches of Student Support Services is Aboriginal Services,
a landing spot where students can get connected to college services,
community services, cultural programs and engage at the Gathering Place.
“When moving to a new community, many students often experience
some sense of isolation,” says Jessica Morin, Selkirk’s Aboriginal Cultural
Assistant. “It’s exacerbated somewhat with indigenous students because
they are typically used to smaller communities with more family support.
When you come to college or pursue any new adventure, it can be a bit
of a transition. We try to create a community within the college so that
people can feel better connected to each other.”
Morin grew up in southwestern Ontario with her Ojibway grandmother
just down the street, but it was only when she moved out West that she
got in touch with her First Nations roots. Using dance as a jumping off
point, over the years Morin has discovered the important depth of her
culture. It’s that passion that helps fuel her desire to help others succeed.
“The journey is really important,” she says. “Indigenous students have
so much to offer the greater college community, their perspectives and
contributions are needed.”
A graduate of Selkirk’s Human Services Program, Morin’s own college
experience started with more questions than answers.
“When I came to the college I didn’t know where to start and at times I
felt very frustrated,” she says. “I felt alone and didn’t know what questions
to ask or how to ask them, but you can’t be afraid to ask. I eventually
found my way and now I can help other students succeed.”
With the Gathering Place providing the grounding point, Aboriginal
Services allows students to take that energy into the classroom and
learning environment.
“Sometimes there are barriers that don’t need to be barriers and I’m
available to help navigate any of those difficult waters,” says Morin. “All it
takes is one person who has done it before to show you how to do it. It’s
all about sharing what we know. I keep learning every day and am grateful
for that.”

About this RepoRt
This report highlights and summarizes key actions Selkirk College has undertaken to align with the scope and objectives set out in the Terms of Reference for Post-Secondary Institution Core Review of Programming. pRocess
The Core Review was formally initiated at the October 22, 2013 open meeting of the Selkirk College Board of Governors.
