Definition (Wikipedia)• “Cloud computing is a style of computing in which dynamically

scalable and often virtualized resources are provided as a service over the Internet. Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure in the "cloud" that supports them.”

Page 3: What is Cloud Computing ( and Windows Azure)

In simple words,…

Cloud Computing: Renting (pay per use)

applications and infrastructure available

over the Internet

This is not a new idea

Edison• Selling generators (DC)• Employs the “current

professionals”• Ultimately, the idea fell

Tesla

• Selling electricity (AC)• The client must adapt• Model working till today

Cloud – „offering”• Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)• Hardware in a cloud

• Platform as a Service (PaaS)• Hardware in a cloud

• Special software (application platform for developers)

• For example - Windows Azure• Software as a Service (SaaS)• Hardware in a cloud

• Special software (application platform for developers)• Client application in a cloud

• For example: BPOS, LIVE etc• Software + Services

Why huge Data Center?

• The construction is VERY expensive• $100+ Million / $300 Milion+; Microsoft $500 million

• Location? Depends on the price per kilowatt / hour

• Result:• Quincy, WA

• Google, Microsoft, Yahoo!, eth…• San Antonio, TX

• Microsoft, US NSA, etc …

Technology Cost in medium DC Cost in big DC X

Network $95 per Mbps//Month $13 per Mbps/Month 7.1

Storage $2.20 per GB/Month $0.40 per GB/Month 5.7

Administration ≈ 140 servers/Admin > 1000 servers/Admin 7.1

Large DCs 5-7 times more cost effective

Price Where? Probably because,

3.6 cents Idaho Hydroelectric power plants, small distances

10.0 cents California Electricity transmitted far vain installations in the Gulf, you can not use coal-fired power plants in California.

18.0 cents Hawaii You have to ship the fuel to provide ....

What does that mean: big?Size of a football field

Infrastructure costs are fixed and ongoing, and distract from the mission of reducing business process friction

Leveraging past investments to provide future value

Many data centers at limit—real estate, capacity, cooling and power

Matching capacity to demand

1 Maintaining security while increasing access and transparency—within and outside the organization

Lack of a common platform

Some common problems…

In Windows Azure these problems do not exist!

So, what is Windows Azure?

Operating system FOR cloud

Reduces the complexity of scalable web applications

Designed to be scalable and always available (replication, redundancy)

The service operates in a Microsoft data center

Page 16: What is Cloud Computing ( and Windows Azure)

Windows Azure OS• Hardware abstraction across multiple servers (we do not see

hardware)• Distributed, scalable containers• Implementation, monitoring and maintenance• Automated service management, load distribution, DNS ....• Environment for programming in accordance with. NET but:• Easy to use from any technology

• Designed for Utility Computing
