(What is an ecosystems?)
เล่มที่ 3 เรื ่อง การถ่ายทอดพลังงานในระบบนิเวศ (transfer energy in an ecosystems)
(What is an
ecosystems?)

WHAT IS AN ECOSYSTEM? We're All in This Together.
Everything in the natural world is connected. An ecosystem is
a community of l iving things (biotic component) and non-l iving
things (abiotic component) that work together. Ecosystems have no
particular size. An ecosystem can be as large as a desert or a lake
or as small as a tree or a puddle.
Consider a small puddle at the back of your home. In it , you
may f ind all sorts of l iving things, from microorganisms, to insects
and plants. These may depend on non-l iving things l ike water,
sunlight in the puddle, temperature, atmospheric pressure and
even nutrients in the water for l i fe.

Ecologists look at relationships in the natural world.
Ecologists look at relationships in the natural world; studying how
animals, plants and humans interact with each other. You’ll need to have
good analytical skills to be an ecologist, as you’ll often be conducting
experiments and undertaking fieldwork. A person who wishes to be in the

THE BASIC NEEDS OF LIVING THINGS
Every l iving organism on earth needs some basic things to
survive. The amount, way, form or kind of these needs vary from
organism to organism. There are f ive basic needs that all l iving
things have. They are sunlight, water, air , food and habitat with the
r ight temperature.

SUNLIGHT
This is probably the most important need for all l iving
organisms, because it is the source of all energy. It also provides
heat for plants and animals
Green plants use sunlight to make food (sugars) in a process
called photosynthesis. They store the food in their leaves and the
energy flows to other animals that eat the leaves. When leaves
fall , decomposers in the soil , work on it , with the help of moisture
and heat from the sun.

WATER Water is needed in many ways and quantit ies by l iving things.
Water may be consumed by l iving things, or may be a habitat for
them. Animals that use water as their habitat or home are called
aquatic animals. Sometimes, there are many nutrients or chemical
compounds dissolved in water, and the concentrations often
decide which animals can l ive them. For example, some fish l ike
herr ings l ive in salty sea waters, whiles t i lapia and salmon l ive in
fresh water with very l ittle or no salt concentrations.

AIR The earth is surrounded by air , a mixture of extremely
important gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.
These gases provide animals with oxygen for respiration to occur. It
also provides green plants with carbon dioxide for photosynthesis
to happen.
It is vital that l iving things respire to get the oxygen for l iving
cells to function. Without air , there is no l i fe.

FOOD We need food to grow, r ight? The food we eat contains the
nutrients that our bodies need to replace worn out cells, stay
healthy and stay strong. It is the same for every l iving organism.
Food come in many different forms, and plants and animals have
special organs or parts that absorb the goodies from the food we
eat.

Figure 11 Habitat http://eschooltoday.com/science/
HABITAT One important function of the organism's home (habitat or
environment) is to provide the ideal temperature in which the
organism can thrive.
Humans have a way of helping themselves if it gets too cold or
too hot. But this is not so for every l iving thing. I f it is too cold or
too hot, some plants will struggle to survive.
This is same for animals too. Ideal temperature is very
important. Extreme temperature can wipe out an entire ecosystem.
