I DETAILS ON PAGE 4 INDO-CANADIAN SCIENTIST TURNS BLOOD INTO NERVE CELLS Toronto, (IANS) Stem cell scientists led by Mick Bhatia from the McMaster University have successfully converted adult human blood cells into neural cells. The team directly converted adult human blood cells to both central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) neurons as well as neurons in the peripheral nervous system (rest of the body) that are responsible for pain, temperature and itch perception. This means that how a person's nervous system cells react and respond to stimuli can be determined from his blood. "Now we can take blood samples and make the main cell types of neurologi- cal systems - the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system - in a dish that is specialised for each patient. Nobody has ever done this with adult blood. Ever," explained Bhatia, director of the McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute. Bhatia's team successfully tested their process using fresh blood as well as frozen blood. Scientists can actually take a patient's blood sample and with it, can produce one million sensory neurons that make up the peripheral nerves in short order with this new approach. "We can also make central nervous system cells, as the blood to neural conversion technology we developed creates neural stem cells during the process of conversion," Bhatia noted. The revolutionary, patented direct conversion technology has "broad and immediate applications". It allows researchers to start asking questions about understanding disease and improving treatments such as: Why is it that certain people feel pain versus numbness? Is this something genetic? Can the neuropathy that dia- betic patients experience be mimicked in a dish? It also paves the way for the discovery of new pain drugs that do not just numb the perception of pain. In the future, the process may have prognostic potential, explained Bhatia, in that one might be able to look at a patient with Type 2 diabetes and predict whether they will experience neuropathy by running tests in the lab using their own neural cells derived from their blood sample. "This bench to bedside research is very exciting and will have a major impact on the management of neurological diseases, particularly neuropathic pain," added Akbar Panju, medical director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care. This research will help scientists provide person- alized medical therapy for patients suffering with neuropathic pain, the au- thors concluded. The breakthrough was detailed in the journal Cell Reports. New Delhi, (IANS) Over 72 per cent of people surveyed in an opinion poll said they were satisfied with the performance of the NDA govern- ment with 56 per cent stating that Narendra Modi was an effective prime minister who had helped improve India's image globally. The survey by the CNN-IBN and IBN 7 news channels said the re- spondents had shown "strong faith" in the Modi government with 61 percent saying that the National Democratic Alliance government has improved their economic condition while 63 percent said India's economy had started looking up during the last one year. A press release said the survey was conducted by Axis MyIndia across 23 states and more than 155 districts with a sample size of 20,00 across all age groups and sections with a 70 to 30 urban-rural spread. "The survey findings show an overwhelming support for Modi. Over 72 per cent of the respondents said that they are satisfied with the performance of the Modi government on account of development, skillful governance and lower prices in the previous year. Fifty-six percent of the sample believes that Narendra Modi is an effective prime minister and has helped improve India's image globally," the release said. A nation snap poll, published by the India Today maga- zine in its latest issue, had stated that Modi's popularity as prime minister had dipped since he assumed power in May last year and that of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had gone up marginally. It had said that to the question "who should be the prime minister of India", 33 per cent respondents had favoured Modi compared to 57 per cent in August last year. The figure for Gandhi was six percent in August last year and 11 percent now. The CNN-IBN IBN7 release said most respondents in the survey felt that corruption and inflation have either come down or have stagnated at the very least. "Employment opportunities have gone up as per 62 per cent of the respondents," it said. On the issue of the relationship between the government and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh - the ideological fountainhead of Bharatiya Janata Party, 32 per cent of the respondents felt that there was no interference by RSS in the affairs of the government. "On the impact of controversial statements such as those relating to 'ghar wapsi', approximately 31 per cent of the respondents felt that such statements do not dent the image of the government at all whereas approximately 33 per cent felt that such statements do have an adverse impact. The Aam Aadmi Party government, which is in a tussle with the central government over powers related to posting and transfer of senior officials, held a public meeting at Central Park in Connaught Place to mark its 100 days. At the venue - thronged by thousands of enthusiastic AAP sup- porters who raised slogans to back the party's claims for more power to run the government in Delhi - Kejriwal, accompanied by his entire cabinet, pulled no punches in hitting out at the Modi government. Listing the government's achievements, AAP leaders said they had ensured cheap power and water, brought down corruption significantly and ensured that the dwellings of the poor were not razed. Apparently emboldened by the Delhi High Court's verdict on Monday that the city government's Anti Corruption Branch (ACB) has the "jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute" Delhi Police officials, Kejriwal said god was on the side of his party and it had nothing to fear. "We are not fighting with the centre, we want to work with them. But the BJP-led central government is imposing dictatorship in Delhi as they can not digest the absolute majority of the AAP in elections," he claimed. "We told the prime minister that you have majority in parliament and we have it in the assembly (Delhi). And it is a golden opportunity to give Delhi statehood, but this is dictatorship," Kejriwal said. I CONTD. ON PAGE 13 INDIAN PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI (IANS).

MODI GOVERNMENT'S ONE YEARGOVERNANCE HAS LARGELY BEEN ON TRACK

BY ANUJ PURI

As the Prime Minister Narendra Modi government enters its second year inoffice on Tuesday, there is no dearth of bouquets and brickbats for the "NaMo"regime in the media. On analysing the government's electoral assurances, the actions taken so far and the respective timelines being followed to achievethese, one would say it is reasonably on track in fulfilling its short-term,medium-term and long-term promises.Importantly, the continuation of the previous government's policies like LandAcquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement (LARR) Bill, and Real Estate(Regulation and Development) Bill will have significant impact on the realtyindustry once these are passed by the parliament. India's historically opaquereal estate sector will move towards more transparency with the introductionand implementation of these key policies. It is worthwhile to reflect on the grassroots-level transformation we canexpect to see:- Millions of home buyers in towns and cities and farmers across the country(the latter being landowners affected by infrastructure projects) are empow-ered with the clauses in the real estate regulatory bill and LARR- Investment opportunities in office spaces open up for small retail investorsthanks to real estate investment trusts (REITs)- The quality of life of millions of Indian citizens is upgraded when the pro-posed 100 smart and sustainable cities come to life- Benami, or fictitious, transactions, which have for the longest time been abane of the real estate sector, are eliminated.Let us take a look at the progress on some of the promises Narendra Modi'sparty made in its electoral manifesto. Specifically, we will isolate promiseswhich have direct bearing on enhanced governance and reinforced demo-cratic fundamentals, which are important for India's development and future-readiness:The promises that are on track:

- Transparency: Re-auctioning of coal blocks earned the government hugerevenues- Efficiency: Real-time effort towards rendering the existing institutional frame-works more efficient; a good example being the change in Food Corporationof India's food procurement and storage mechanisms.- Productivity And Accountability: Prime Minister Modi has been directlyinvolved in monitoring and raising the productivity as well as efficiency of hisministry officials. He is clearly bucking a chronic trend of bureaucratic un-availability and aiming to increase public access to government officials.- Black Money: The bill to curb black money has given a moratorium periodto bring back unaccounted money into the system by paying normal tax. Theongoing dialogue with the Swiss financial authorities to disclose secret ac-counts of Indians abroad is reaping results.- Corruption: Wired (online) transactions are now being encouraged for prop-erty transactions. This is a major step forward for curtailing black money inthe sector.- Investor Confidence: Market confidence has improved with the strengthen-ing of the Indian equity, debt, currency markets and equal tax regime that waspromised to both domestic as well as international investment companies.- Positioning India: Via a series of international tours, the prime minister ishelping India rid itself of its anti-investor image and is opening up new av-enues of foreign business in India, especially under the Make in India cam-paign.- Decentralisation And Cooperative Governance: Gradual increase in thefinancial autonomy of states, farmers have real-time information on mini-mum support price through digital channels and drastic price movementshave been largely under control. A focus on citizen outreach programmes aswell as leveraging social media have bought the people closer to the gover-nance process.Promises that may see progress soon:- States with similar problems will be able to form councils under NITI Aayogto discuss common concerns- NITI Aayog, along with other national agencies, will help individual states inmobilisation of resources.Promises that saw little or no progress:- Relaxing clauses in the LARR Bill, REITs and foreign direct investment (FDI)policies that investors find difficult to follow

- Increased credit facilitation to start-ups- Initiation of employment exchange programmes with other countries- Obsolete laws to be scrapped or modified- Online dissemination of court cases for better monitoring and creation ofspecialised courts to fast-track delivery of justice. In short, the Modi government has a fairly balanced list of hits and misses sofar. The trend does seem to lean more towards action than inaction. It defi-nitely seems that the prime minister has every intention of living up to thelarger part of his electoral promises in the future. One agrees with Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Raghuram Rajanwhen he says that the expectations from the new government when it came topower last year were "probably unrealistic". But it has, in fact, taken steps to createan environment for investment and is sensitive to concerns of investors.

IMPORTANTLY, THE CONTINUATION OFTHE PREVIOUS GOVERNMENT'SPOLICIES LIKE LAND ACQUISITION ANDREHABILITATION AND RESETTLEMENT(LARR) BILL, AND REAL ESTATE(REGULATION AND DEVELOPMENT)BILL WILL HAVE SIGNIFICANT IMPACTON THE REALTY INDUSTRY ONCE THESEARE PASSED BY THE PARLIAMENT.INDIA'S HISTORICALLY OPAQUE REALESTATE SECTOR WILL MOVE TOWARDSMORE TRANSPARENCY WITH THEINTRODUCTION AND IMPLEMENTATIONOF THESE KEY POLICIES.

Euphoria gone but hope yet for realty industryCONGRESS SPOKESPERSON PRIYANKA CHATURVEDI DURING A PRESS CONFERENCE IN CHANDIGARH (IANS).

BY VINOD BEHLFor India's realty industry, the initialeuphoria has died down and the highexpectations have also moderated inthe absence of swift relief, as thePrime Minister Narendra Modi gov-ernment concludes one year in of-fice on Tuesday. Yet, there is a stronghope of revival with sustained growth. It's taking longer than expected for'Achhe Din' -- or the good days prom-ised by Modi -- to arrive for the realestate industry, which is reeling un-der liquidity crunch, slow sales andhigh unsold inventory. This is because the government isworking on a medium-to-long termstrategy to revive economic growth

by boosting consumption and re-star ting investment cycle. And itstrongly believed that reform-led poli-cies work better in the long run forthe growth of real estate rather thanshort term booster dose.Notwithstanding the reformist poli-cies of the progressive and forward-looking government, the current realestate scenario is a matter of con-cern. Both investors and end-usersare deserting the market due to highproperty and lending rates amidstdemand-supply mismatch have ataken toll of the market. In the Delhi National Capital Region, the biggest residential real estatemarket in the country, for the first time

in three years, the sales have droppedmore than 50 percent in the first quar-ter of this year. The unsold inventory is rising sharplyacross the country, with Mumbai re-cording the highest 200,000 units, followed by NCR with 170,000 units.Going by the industry statistics, NCR,Mumbai and Bengaluru will respec-tively take about 54 months, 34months and 28 months to clear theinventory.Another worrying factor is the highdebt-to-equity ratio of real estatecompanies which are finding it diffi-cult to reduce debt due to high inter-est outgo and poor cash flows. Thecritical situation can be gauged from

the fact that market leader DLF sawits debt rising by Rs.628 crore toRs.20,965 crore in March quarter2015.But several reform initiatives under-taken by the Modi government in itsfirst year have raised high hopes ofreal estate turnaround. The govern-ment is putting great emphasis onboosting foreign direct investment toovercome fund crunch. Its policy ini-tiative to ease foreign equity rules inconstruction by reducing the mini-mum capital requirement from $10million to $5 million and built-up areafrom 50,000 square metres to 20,000square metres is meant to providelifeline to fund-starved developers.By clearing decks for real estate in-vestment Trusts (REITs), the govern-ment has provided new funding op-tion for developers and investmentavenue for retail investors. There isanother major initiative by way of al-lowing foreign investments in alter-nate investment funds. And in a re-cent twin-measure, the governmenthas eased foreign equity norms foroverseas Indians and liberalisedrules for allowing offshore loans inrupee.Further, single-window foreign equitynod and regulation of norms per-taining to foreigners and firmspurchasing proper ty in India areunderway. Besides these reformmeasures, the government is cre-ating policy environment that ispredictable and transparent andfor this measures like expeditiousand timely approval processes, progressive tax regime, rationalisation of labour laws andease of doing business are beingtaken.

MODI GOVERNMENT LACKSECONOMIC VISION: CHIDAMBARAMNew Delhi, (IANS) In his strongest criticism of the economic policiesof the NDA government timed to coincide with the completion of itsfirst year in office, former finance minister P. Chidambaram has ac-cused the Narendra Modi government of lacking an economic vision. In an interview to India Today channel's "To The Point" programmebroadcast on Monday night, Chidambaram said the first year of theModi government in office is a story of missed oppor tunities. While complimenting the government for continuing the direct benefitsubsidy transfer policy and the other policies of the previous UPAgovernment, he said the biggest minus was the government's han-dling of agriculture. The lack of attention to agriculture, he told journalist Karan Thapar,"means that agricultural livelihoods are not improving, agriculturalincome is stagnating, and, therefore, agricultural demand is stagnat-ing"."This will have an impact both on Make in India and, more impor-tantly, any hope of getting to 8, leave aside 10 percent growth," headded. He also accused the government of damaging cuts in welfare schemesdesigned for the poor, the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.Chidambaram went on to question why his successor, Finance Min-ister Arun Jaitley had altered the fiscal deficit targets that he had setas the previous one, and said doing so is a mistake. Jaitley had, in hisfirst full union budget in February, extended the target deadline forcontrolling fiscal deficit to three percent, reasoning that insistence on

a timetable to contain the deficit would harm growth prospects. The targets for the next three years have been set at 3.9 percent for2015-16, 3.5 percent for 2016-17, and 3.0 percent for 2017-18.Describing the government's Make in India campaign as "just a cleverslogan", Chidambaram said Reserve Bank of India GovernorRaghuram Rangarajan has recently shown that projects wor th some7 percent of GDP are stalled, adding that the first thing that must bedone is to clear these projects."Absolutely nothing has happened because no one has come to Makein India," he said.On insurance, Chidambaram pointed out that Jaitley can hardly claimcredit for raising the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit when thelatter and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj stalled this samemeasure during the UPA years. At a press conference here earlier in the day, Chidambaram rejectedasser tions by the ruling NDA that the opposition was trying to "ob-struct" key bills in parliament."Did we obstruct the insurance bill? They (NDA) did it for five (parlia-ment) sessions. I was vir tually imploring them to pass it. Did weobstruct the black money bill," he asked.Accusing the NDA yet again of being pro-corporate, he said: "Ifyou ask the farmer, the average farmer today will give a zero outof 10 (to the government). BAGHDAD, (IANS) Iraqi security forces on Sunday clashed with Is-lamic State (IS) militants and repelled their attacks in Iraq's westernprovince of Anbar, provincial security source and an official said. The security forces and allied Sunni tribal fighters repelled two at-tacks by dozens of IS militants and five explosives-laden vehicles, including a booby-trapped armoured vehicle, on a residential com-pound, which is adjacent to the town of al-Baghdadi, some 200 kmnor thwest of Iraq's capital Baghdad, leaving at least six IS militantswearing explosive vests dead, a provincial security source toldXinhua news agency. The attacks also targeted the nearby mili-tary airbase of Ain al-Asad, which houses hundreds of US Ma-rines, but the troops repelled the attackers, the source said with-out giving fur ther details.Ain al-Asad military airbase is used by Iraqi military forces, aswell as roughly 300 US Marines as military trainers and advisers.Separately, the security forces and allied Shia and Sunni militias, known as Hashd Saabi (Popular Mobilization), recaptured the areaof Anqoura, south of the town of Khaldiyah, some 80 km west of

Baghdad, after they drove out the IS militants who seized the areaabout nine months ago, the source said. The capture of Anqoura willsecure the perimeter of Khaldiyah and nearby airbase of Habbaniyahfrom possible IS attacks on the security forces who are building uptroops to carry out a major offensive against the IS militants. Thebattle in Anqoura came a day after the troops and Popular Mobilisationunits retook control of the small town of Huseibah al-Sharqiyah, mov-ing from their bases in Habbaniyah airbase and Khaldiyah. The fight against the IS group is par t of a major counter-offensivedesigned to free the provincial capital city of Ramadi, some 110 kmwest of Baghdad, which fell into the hands of IS militants after deadlybattles last week. However, the IS militants earlier in the day repor t-edly hit on the other side of Iraq's largest province of Anbar, when theytook full control of al-Walid border crossing point with neighbouringSyria after clashes with security forces. "The militants of Daesh (Ara-bic acronym of IS) have seized al-Walid crossing early in the morningafter the withdrawal of Iraqi forces," another provincial security sourcetold Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

TURKEY, US AGREE TO GIVE AIR COVER TO SYRIAN REBELSSeoul, (IANS/AKI) Turkey and the US have in "principle" agreed to provide air suppor t to mainstream Syrian rebels being trained andequipped to fight Islamic State militants, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said here on Monday."They have to be suppor ted via air. If you do not protect them or provide air suppor t, what is the point?" he told Daily Sabah newspaperduring a visit to Seoul. He did not go into details on what "in principle" meant or what kind of air cover would be provided or by whom. The long-delayed scheme is meant to send 15,000 troops back to Syria but has been mired in delays amid repor ts of disagreementsbetween the two NATO allies.Turkey says its support for scheme is conditional on a comprehensive strategy that includes battling forces loyal to Syria's authoritarianpresident Bashar al-Assad.While opposing Assad, the US maintains the goal of the training is only to defeat IS in Syria. US officials have said the aim is to train5,000 Syrians a year for three years at a base in the central Turkish city of Kirsehir and at sites in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.Ankara and Washington agreed in February to train and equip the Syrians under a $500 million US programme.

US MEDIA UNDERLINESCHALLENGES AFTERMODI'S ONE-YEAR RULEWashington, (IANS) Reflecting on the completion of one yearof Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government, the US mediaon Monday underlined various challenges facing his govern-ment, saying he "must face the reality that much of hisagenda is still only potential"."After soaring through India’s political stratosphere on theeconomic promise 'achche din aa gaye' or 'better daysare coming', Mr. Modi must face the reality that much ofhis agenda is still only potential," the New York Timessaid while analysing the achievements of the primeminister's one-year-old government. While counting Modi's accomplishments in some sectorslike allowing more foreign investment in railways anddefence sectors and helping cut red tape, The Wall StreetJournal said: "On other key fronts, Mr. Modi has movedless decisively, frustrating investors who hoped for bolderchange after last year’s election."The NYT pointed out that India is now seen as a brightspot as soon-to-be "the world’s fastest-growing largeeconomy," but at home, "job growth remains sluggish".Listing the political challenges faced by Modi, the USdaily said the opposition had blocked "two of his centralreform initiatives and brand him 'anti-poor' and 'anti-farmer'".On the economy front, the Journal said Modi's governmenthas avoided privatising state-run banks and companies,"which could trigger unpopular job cuts"."Despite vows to improve India’s reputation for unpredict-able tax collection, the government has hit investors withdemands for back taxes they say they shouldn’t have topay," it added.Analysing Modi's “Make in India” campaign, the Journalsaid the aim of supercharging manufacturing growth to12-14 percent a year, "is so far mostly hype". TANU WEDS MANU RETURNSa scaled-up family entertainer

BY TROY RIBEIROVery rarely do sequels create an im-pact as the original, but in the case of"Tanu Weds Manu Returns", the in-tensity is as forceful or more than theoriginal. Once again packed withsharp and witty dialogues, fine per-formances and a feel-good factor,"Tanu Weds Manu Returns" excelsas a scaled-up family entertainer. This sequel takes off from where itleft in the previous edition in 2011and returns with the lead pair afterfour years of jaded bliss. Their mar-riage is now on the rocks. TanujaTrivedi aka Tanu is as moody as shewas and he, Manoj Sharma aka Manuis at the end of his tether. Still in Lon-don, their divorce is inevitable afterTanu manages to ensure that Manuis kept back in St. Benedict Mental

Hospital in Twickenham in Britain. She returns to Kanpur to her family.Manu too returns forlorn to Indiawhere he lands up meeting KusumSangwan, who is Tanu's lookalike.Seemingly in love with Kusum, hedecides to remarry. With well-etched but flawed charac-ters, the performance of each actoris noteworthy. Kangana steals theshow with the dual role she essays. In both her characters, she is distinctin her sartorial style, speech andmannerisms. As Tanu, she is an ex-tension of herself as portrayed in theearlier edition. But as KusumSangwan, a Haryanvi athlete, shebrings out a sharp contrast, exhibit-ing her prowess as an actress.Kusum's simplicity and sincerity getyou emotionally attached to her.

R. Madhavan complements her withhis overall subtle and restrained per-formance. He plays the traumatisedhusband to the hilt. But he also hitsthe right high-pitched notes convinc-ingly as the harassed husband at themental hospital.Of the rest of the supporting cast,Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as ad-vocate Arun Kumar Singh is vibrant. With his casual, yet evocative per-formance, he displays sparks of bril-liance. Deepak Dobriyal as Pappi,Manu's confidante is over-the-top. Heis repetitive and after a while, is jar-ring in the narration.Jimmy Sheirgill as Raja Awasthi hasa few scenes where he makes hispresence felt as the unlucky man-in-love. Swara Bhaskar as Payal alongwith Eijaz Khan as Jassi, make a fine

pair and are fairly noticeable.Director Anand L.Rai's plot is punc-tuated with moments of family ten-sion and spiced with great rustic col-loquial one-liners that sparkle. Thedialogues keep you in splits. His screenplay is frothy and he takesa lazy approach in certain scenes.Though scene after scene you rollwith laughter, they falter at times withforced humour. This is evident in theseminar scene, where Manu is in-vited to give a medical speech. The graph of the narration too, is in-consistent. The first half thoughflighty, is engaging. The second halfdigresses with lengthy unwarrantedscenes; espec ia l l y the scenewhich has Geeta Dutt 's song"Ja, ja, ja bewafa" as the back-ground score and Tanu wander-ing aimlessly on the streets. The rest of the songs mergewell into the narration. The En-glish jazz number, "So What if Iam an old school gir l " takesyou by surprise. It stands outas an odd piece, but one thatsettles well into the overlay. It iswell-picturised too. The back-ground score is loud and exces-sive, but suits the overall designof the film.Conceived as a realistic film, theproduction quality is apt and cin-ematographer Chirantan Das'sframes are atmospheric. Theycapture the small town ambience per-fectly. Kangana's performanceunarguably ups the viewing quotient ofthe film. So watch this film for herand Himanshu Sharma's razor-sharp dialogues.

Dhoni alsoattributed the second over bowled by Mohit Shrama to be a key factor wherein CSK conceded the momentum to Mumbai Indians whowon the match by 41 runs to lift their second IPL crown."The second over was not good and thata¿s was the instance when we gave the momentum to Mumbai. I felt it was quite a tough wicketand if you did not give width, but the second over was the one where we gave them the land slide which we were not able to control," saidDhoni at the presentation ceremony. "The kind of momentum they built on from that point of the game, we were not really able to comeback into the game," said the keeper-batsman. Bowling the inning's second over, pacer Mohit Sharma conceded 16 runs including twofours and a six all hit by Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma. Mumbai went on to score 202/5. Dhoni also said the team missed the servicesA ofdashing Kiwi opener Brendon McCullum who had to leave the IPL for doing duties for the New Zealand national team. "Losing McCullumjust before the knock out stage was a big blow as he always gave us a good star t at the top especially when the wicket is good. In thesetypes of wickets he is an ideal opener," he said. Even as he praised his team for collective effor t, Dhoni claimed the players could notreach their optimal level of efficiency. "It was more of a team effor t coming to the final. But I don't think we reached hundred percentefficiency level because there are quite a few cricketers in our side who haven't done as well as they should have.

MUMBAI INDIANS, WINNERS OF THE IPL 2015. (IANS)

IPL 2015: In the arena of youngsters,'golden oldies' shimmerBy Anurag DeyKolkata, (IANS) Cricket's shor test format is usually said to besuited for the fresh legs and young blood but a number of playersin the latest edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) have yet againproved that age is just a number. If 17-year-old Sarfaraz Khan fearlessly hitting bowlers is a sightto behold, veterans like Ashish Nehra, Chris Gayle and BradHogg have turned back the clock and literally made the adage'old is gold' come true.Spearheading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pace attack, Nehrastood out scalping 22 wickets at 20.40 runs apiece."I have got three Man-of-the-Match awards this season and thatsays it all. It is not easy for a fast bowler to pick up that manyawards in one season. People are noticing it more because I am36 and a guy at this age is doing something unbelievable inTwenty20s," the left-armer said.Mumbai Indians' 35-year-old offie Harbhajan Singh yet againshowed why he is called a fighter. The feisty cricketer sizzledwith the ball, and at times even with the bat, to play a crucial rolein his team winning their second IPL crown.Bowling with his usual guile, the 'Turbanator' took 2/26 againstCSK in Qualifier 1 to take Mumbai to their third final. In the sum-mit clash at the Eden Gardens, he yet again proved to be Chennai'snemesis, scalping the prized wickets of dangerous openerDwayne Smith and middle-order mainstay Suresh Raina. With 18 wickets to his name in IPL-8 and a 19-ball fifty to boast, the selectors did fulfil the man's 'burning desire' to play for Indiaagain as he made a comeback to the national Test squad for theBangladesh tour after more than two years.Yet another 'oldie' who has drawn the spotlight is Kolkata KnightRiders' (KKR) chinaman bowler Bradd Hogg. At 44 - the oldestplayer in IPL history - the Australian made full use of the limitedchances he was offered. Besides bamboozling the batsmen, hewas also a livewire on the field.Playing just his second game this season, Hogg took 4/29 toenable KKR canter towards a seven-wicket victory over CSK athome. With nine wickets to his name from six matches, thetweaker earned lavish praise, both from his teammates and ri-vals for his grit, determination and hard work.CSK all-rounder Dwayne Bravo, who took 26 wickets to win thepurple cap, is also no youngster. At 32, the Trinidadian was skip-per Mahendra Singh Dhoni's go-to-man and his knack to pick upwickets at crucial junctures powered the team to their sixth IPLfinal, although they faltered at the last hurdle losing to MumbaiIndians by 41 runs.Delhi Daredevils did finish a poor seventh in the standings, buttheir 36-year-old South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir earnedplaudits. Picking up 15 wickets, he contributed significantly inthe team's five victories in 14 games. Well, it's not the bowlersalone, in the batting depar tment too, the weather-beaten proshave left their mark. Only four centuries were scored in the latestedition of the cash-rich league and the youngest of the four cen-turions is Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) AB de Villiers, who is 31. Arguably the best batsmen in contemporary cricket, the South African skipper notched up 513 runs from 16 matchesto be the RCB's batting mainstay. RCB opener Gayle, at 36, yetagain lived up to the billing of being the world's most destructivebatsman. Besides winning the maximum sixes award with asmany as 38 hits over the boundary, the Jamaican cracked hisfifth century in IPL, scoring 117 against Kings XI Punjab. Plunder-ing 491 runs this season, he has now 3,199 runs to his name tobe third highest run-getter in IPL history. The other centurions --Shane Watson of Rajasthan Royals and CSK's big hitting openerBrendon McCullum, both 34, -- have defied age to contributesignificantly for their respective teams. After going down to Mumbai in the final, CSK skipper Dhoni at-tributed the absence of McCullum as one of the reasons for hisside's loss. The opener, who left the tournament to join his NewZealand side for the Test series in England, had scored 436 from14 outings, giving a solid star t in most matches. He may not have lit the stage on fire, but CSK's 40-year-oldMichael Hussey once again justified his nickname -- Mr. Cricket.Still fit as a fiddle and a safe fielder, Hussey struck a 46-ball 56against RCB to shepherd CSK through a tricky chase and takethem to their sixth final.
