Youth Activity Area creates a buzzThe new Youth Activity Area on Orchard Avenue is certainly creating a buzz around town, with hundreds of people using the space to skateboard, ride their bmx or scooter, or relax on the benches under the shady trees. New cameras have been installed to film tricks to playback on the big screen for special night time programs in conjunction with youth agencies. Please be safe when using the area and stay with the perimeters of the space.

Is your business gold standard? With a 10% increase in tourism in Armadale over the past 12 months, we are keen to highlight those businesses who have achieved gold standard ratings. Armadale has dozens of food outlets serving hundreds of residents, visitors and tourists everyday. We’re looking for the best of the best.

The City of Armadale is introducing a trial award scheme to inform customers about food hygiene so that they can make informed choices as to where they may wish to eat out.

There are currently 115 local food establishments eligible under the scheme and they will be assessed two to three times a year to evaluate their hygiene standards during routine inspections. Those businesses scoring highly will be rated as good, very good or excellent and will be presented with a certificate which can be displayed at their premises.

If you are a food business and would like to know more, contact Health Services on 9399 0111.

The recent National Rowing Championships at Champion Lakes was a spectacular event in our region, with thousands of competitors and spectators at Australia’s newest rowing facility and hundreds of local residents taking advantage of the free entry on the weekend.

In this issue of City Views we have started the process of community consultation. This is where we as Council engage with as many people as we can in the community to find out what you want for Armadale. What do you think the future Armadale needs and what is your vision for our district?

This is so important for us as a region and for us to get feedback from you, our residents. So please let us know what you think! If you’re a local food business we have launched the food hygiene awards scheme which sees the best of the best rewarded for their efforts and if you’re a budding young writer, the City’s Young Writers’ Awards will also soon be open.

Minnawarra Festival colours the streetsThousands of people enjoyed this year’s Minnawarra Festival which was spread across the Armadale CBD. The Perth Tram proved to be a great hit, taking people round the sites and the camel rides were loved by young people. Jull St Mall was picture perfect with artists painting and local musicians made the front of the train station come alive.

If you’re a community group, local band or artist and you’d like to get involved in the Festival next year, please email us on [email protected]

All your rubbish is taken to the Hopkinson Road Landfill and Recycling Facility in Hilbert. The trucks empty the waste on to the tip face. It is then compacted by a 36 tonne landfill compactor and covered with sand, ready for another layer of waste the following day.

With so much waste being produced and collected every year the landfill facility is expected to reach capacity within the next 10 – 15 years. Once the tip reaches capacity, it will be covered with soil and vegetation and used as a transfer station to process greenwaste and recyclables.

For this very reason it is crucial everyone recycles. Residents can recycle white goods, scrap metal, car batteries, cardboards, newspapers, magazines, motor oil (max 20L) and glass bottles at the tip for free. Other things that can be recycled with your tip passes are greenwaste, TVs and computers, sand and soil, concrete and brick rubble and household chemicals.

During the annual junk collection, the City collects nearly 2,000 tonnes of old junk, furniture and whitegoods. Rather than sending it to the landfill, why not donate your reusable items to the Drop N Shop? Your ‘junk’ could be someone’s treasure.

Young Re-inventors Are your kids bursting with creativity? Schools are being encouraged to get their classes involved in the Young Re-inventors challenge.

Young Re-inventors is teaching students to think differently about waste; by turning everyday trash into tomorrow’s next great “re-invention”.

All inventions must contain a minimum of 70% recycled content. Inventions will be judged on originality, practicality, environmental impact and visual amenity. Every entrant will receive $100 voucher to purchase invention items of their choice from the Drop ‘N’ Shop Reuse Centre.

Young re-inventors will have Term 2 to put together their eco-friendly creations. Sustainable prize packs and vouchers will be awarded to winning entries.

To find out more information or register for the competition contact the Switch Your Thinking Program Officer on 0428 917 898 or email [email protected].

What a load of rubbishMost people do not think about their rubbish once it gets picked up by the garbage truck, but as the Armadale Landfill slowly reaches capacity, thinking about what you do with your waste will soon become a certainty.

Armadale Drop N Shop After sorting, cleaning and repairing, items are re-sold to the public for incredibly competitive prices.

Browse a range of items including books, bikes, toys, tools, furniture and building materials and grab a bargain whilst reducing the environmental impact.

Opening times:

Thursday 10am – 2pm Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm Weekends 8.30am – 4.30pm

They found what? EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) from a boat. After accidentally activating the item a rescue helicopter was seen flying overhead search for the distress signal.

Several unexploded military shells have also been found at the Landfill!

Nearly 20,000 waste bins and 10,000 recycling bins are collected across the City every week. That’s about 20,000 tonnes of rubbish every year or the same as the total weight of 1600 TransPerth buses.
