  • What do we mean?A dementia friendly community is composed of the whole community - shop assistants, public service workers, religious groups, businesses, police, transport and community leaders - who are committed to work together and help people with dementia to remain a part of their community and not become apart from it.

    This involves learning about dementia and doing very simple and practical things that can make an enormous difference.

    Distributing Tips for Shops and Businesses information to all staff

    Considering any simple changes that might make the environment more dementia friendly Displaying information about dementia and promotional materials such as Help Line cards, posters and leaflets where practicable Agreeing to work with Alzheimer Scotland and partners once/twice per year to support the promotion of agreed campaigns.

    Treating customers who may be living with dementia with understanding, dignity and respect.

    One local pub asked about safe drinking for older people Health Scotland We have been asked to do 4 Environmental AuditsLibraries will offer events around the theme of dementiaWe will train around 12 - 15 in-store champions (MFC, ADSA, Boots and Mobile Hairdresser) Engaged with Network Rail and Scotrail. Initial focus on Motherwell with roll out to Edinburgh Waverley and Glasgow Central Request from local church befriending groupNew Town Centre Planning dementia friendly design (Ravenscraig site)

    ASDA staff members had to empty the Dementia Cafe box three times, adding that the project has received the highest ever number of votes for any group during the polls one year history.

    What is mental health recovery?Recovery means being able to live a meaningful and satisfying life, as defined by you, in the presence or absence of symptoms.

It was also an opportunity for other town centre businesses to learn more and register their interest in taking part.

    We also used the Alz Scot Memory Bus to raise awareness and managed to support 40 people on the day with enquiries. This led to further discussions with the Town Centre Manager and the bus has been parked in a further 2 NL Town Centres with over 40 enquiries recorded. Alzheimer Scotland
