What Do I need to Think About When Starting Up a Business? The road to starting up a business is a bumpy one. It can be the emotionally challenging and stressful. As with most things, it is best to put a little bit of forethought into this idea. I have put a few pointers together to help you in this busy time: 1. Don’t go into business with your friends or family. Pick someone who will become your business partner and ensure you can trust them. It is a tough time and you need to be prepared to lose whoever you go into business with. 2. Lay out the rules – Agree upfront how you will manage issues with your business partner(s). This should include the emotional issues, who will be boss and how decisions will be made. Define each other’s roles and what you will each do. This should include how you will split the risks as well as the rewards. 3. Stay focused – Ensure that you stay absolutely clear about what your targets and goals are and focus 100% on the attainment of these goals. If you keep changing direction and method then you will not be as effective and will only tie yourself in knots! 4. Expect to sacrifice – Every entrepreneur has to sacrifice something. It is best to consider what you can and cannot sacrifice before you jump in with both feet. 5. There is always room for improvement – Remember that you can always get better. Whether this be you, the service you deliver or the product that you are selling. When things start to take too long keep your frustrations in check by telling yourself that things are never finished. 6. Go with your gut – Your gut is based upon your experiences. It is an essential tool for all of us and one of the most valuable that you have in your possession. If you are struggling with an issue, ask yourself how you feel. This first emotion is often the right way to go. 7. Talk to people – Talk to everyone and anyone. Ask people what they are doing as well as what you are doing. The most important thing is to talk to new people. You will be surprised what you can learn. 8. Celebrate the small things – Make a list of goals and celebrate when you hit one of them – No matter how small!! Others will not celebrate them for you, so promote these little successes whenever they occur. It will also boost your confidence. 9. Love the freedom – The freedom you get from becoming an entrepreneur is unfortunately coupled with some foes. These come in the guise of uncertainty and not knowing what surprises lie around the corner. The sooner you learn to love the unknown and the fact that you will not have all the answers then the happier you will be.

What Do I need to Think About When Starting Up a

Business?

The road to starting up a business is a bumpy one. It can be the emotionally challenging and

stressful. As with most things, it is best to put a little bit of forethought into this idea. I

have put a few pointers together to help you in this busy time:

1. Don’t go into business with your friends or family. Pick someone who will become your

business partner and ensure you can trust them. It is a tough time and you need to be

prepared to lose whoever you go into business with.

2. Lay out the rules – Agree upfront how you will manage issues with your business

partner(s). This should include the emotional issues, who will be boss and how decisions

will be made. Define each other’s roles and what you will each do. This should include how

you will split the risks as well as the rewards.

3. Stay focused – Ensure that you stay absolutely clear about what your targets and goals

are and focus 100% on the attainment of these goals. If you keep changing direction and

method then you will not be as effective and will only tie yourself in knots!

4. Expect to sacrifice – Every entrepreneur has to sacrifice something. It is best to consider

what you can and cannot sacrifice before you jump in with both feet.

5. There is always room for improvement – Remember that you can always get better.

Whether this be you, the service you deliver or the product that you are selling. When

things start to take too long keep your frustrations in check by telling yourself that things

are never finished.

6. Go with your gut – Your gut is based upon your experiences. It is an essential tool for all

of us and one of the most valuable that you have in your possession. If you are struggling

with an issue, ask yourself how you feel. This first emotion is often the right way to go.

7. Talk to people – Talk to everyone and anyone. Ask people what they are doing as well as

what you are doing. The most important thing is to talk to new people. You will be

surprised what you can learn.

8. Celebrate the small things – Make a list of goals and celebrate when you hit one of them

– No matter how small!! Others will not celebrate them for you, so promote these little

successes whenever they occur. It will also boost your confidence.

9. Love the freedom – The freedom you get from becoming an entrepreneur is

unfortunately coupled with some foes. These come in the guise of uncertainty and not

knowing what surprises lie around the corner. The sooner you learn to love the unknown

and the fact that you will not have all the answers then the happier you will be.

10. Turn negatives into positives – It is imperative that you channel your negative thoughts

into positive ones. Failure is a learning experience. Take note of what has not gone to plan

and learn from it for the next time. Remember that you cannot change what you have

done; only what you are going to do.
