The Apple App Store
The Apple App Store is the place where consumers can install software onto their iphone. No two iphones are the same. Consumers can personalize their device with the software apps that they find most useful. As of May 2011, Apple approved its 500,000th app and 37% of all apps are free while the mean average price all the apps is £2.33. Since early July 2011, 200 million Apple users have downloaded over 15 billion apps from its App Store. There are currently over 20 categories of Apps which range from entertainment to education.
iPod Music and video on your phoneAll iphones also function as an ipod. This allows consumers to store and play their music files from their phone. iphones come in different memory sizes and depending on the length of the song an 8GB phone can hold 2,000 songs or 8 hours of video. 16GB: 4,000 songs or 16 hours of video. A 32GB: 8,000 songs or 32 hours of video.
To save the phone memory space some software apps like Spotify also now allow consumers to stream music over the internet to their phone. The Spotify music catalogue contains millions and millions of tracks and albums. It’s so enormous, in fact, that it’d take you more than 80 years of non-stop listening just to get through it. And that’s not counting the 10,000 new tracks they add every day!
If consumers choose to pay a subscription of £10 per month they can have access to a growing library of music streamed directly to their iphone.
The internet on your phoneSafari is the name of the iPhone's web browser, and it displays pages similar to Mac and Windows PC’s. The iphone accesses the web by connecting to a local wireless network or by using 3G a mobile internet network.
Web pages may be viewed in portrait or landscape mode and the iphone supports automatic zooming by pinching together or spreading apart fingertips on the screen, or by double-tapping text or images.
According to Net Applications, Safari accounted for 62.17% of mobile web browsing traffic. All the information contained on the internet is literally at the tips of your fingers.
GPS and location based services
Consumers of iphones have the capacity to use their iphones as a Global Positioning System. This means that the geographical location if the device can be pin-ponted on a map. While this has advantages for navigation, it can be also used for other practical reasons.
Apps like Locly enable consumers to find information relating to particular services within the local area. Consumers can search for events, news, restaurants, shops, supermarkets, taxi firms and a range of other services which are close to the iphone’s current location.
Siri – A voice activated personal assistant
To enable quicker and more efficient use, the new iphone 4s has a new built in app which is voice activated personal assistant called Siri. This allows consumers to use their voice to send messages, schedule meetings, place phone calls, and search the internet.
Email on your phone
Consumers of the iphone are also able to access their email accounts through their device quickly and efficiently.
Communication to your friends, work colleagues or business enquiries can be accessed through the iphone.
Camera and Facetime
The new iphone 4s has a built in 8 mega pixel reversible camera. Possibly the best camera on any mobile phone.
The new 4s has a larger f/2.4 aperture which lets in more light, so photos look brighter and better. The camera also has new face detection, this camera is smart enough to know whether you’re taking a portrait or a group shot. It focuses on the most prominent face in the frame and balances exposure across up to 10 faces.
Also, any photograph taken by the camera is tagged by the GPS so that the photograph can be displayed on a map.
Facetime is also another app which uses the camera to allow video conference calls between iphones. This creates a new diemntion to communication.
Social networking on your iphoneIn order to be able to communicate information, the iphone makes use of apps like Facebook and Twitter.
These enable consumers to create content on the internet and share this with others, quickly and efficiently all directly from their iphone.
